You know how Ian usually does that thing where every character just directly says exactly what they mean instead of showing you? Or how he feels the need to waste your fucking time by going through the motions and giving each character equal screen time? Or how he'll have people therapy speak at each other?

None of that shit. It's just a snappy action comedy. The main cast is a group of shitheads and the new girl is indirectly causing them to soften on each other as the story progresses. The book's basically just three "episodes" with a decent throughline. The lead is impetuous and proud to the point that she gets big wins but undercuts herself and ends them back at 0. The "brains" of the group is a fussy bitch who expects respect that he doesn't earn. The pilot is so indifferent that he considers selling the others out and he doesn't put in the work to smooth things out. The new kid is bad about trying to please everyone and is clearly more of a mischievous little shit than she lets on.

They're allowed to just BE like this and across the three stories these traits clash and slowly erode a bit until they're reaching group synergy. We get the protagonist's core motivation, world building, secondary motivations for several characters, a lot of foreshadowing done without taking up any time, and three fun fight scenes. Also the main character has a fat ass.

It's an 8 for me. I smiled the whole way through. Usually I'm really critical of Ian, but I guess a decade of stewing on this helped.

Sonic and Amy are horrifically out of character in the Chaotix Story.
Sonic cares more stories than artifacts. We know this because of the story games. Sonic should not be willfully spending time with Amy over listening to cool stories from his friends.
The artstyles sans Charmy were worse than the comic's baseline. They weren't charming (besides Charmy's) and felt like a cost saving measure more than anything. Like how the last few episodes of evangelion were held back by budget constraints.
Amy is out of character here. She's whiney and annoying and cares more about stringing Sonic along with relics than immersing herself. Amy is supposed to be passionate. None of that was on display here.
I've oft characterized Amy as an 'anchor to the wind', sometimes earnestly and sometimes to play Devil's Advocate. Nowhere is that more true than here. She only exists in this story to nag and drag Sonic around. Her universe centers around and revolves around Sonic.
I hate this issue of the comic.
Sonic feels OOC (Why is he willingly spending time with Amy, anyways? He's the wind. Not some glorified boytoy). Amy feels OOC. Tails is weirdly absentee despite the fact that it'd make sense for him to be interested in matters of historical interest.
It's a terrible issue that celebrates nothing about the Chaotix and feels more like a standard issue of IDW than anything else. If anything, the characterization is worse than usual.
