Christmas Carol 2025
Rick Astley - Love This Christmas
Music Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uYCUNULp868
Lyric Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucg3wvgk_Ac
Lyrics: https://genius.com/Rick-astley-love-this-christmas-lyrics
This year we're producing an alternative Christmas song for the thread, this time a rendition of Love This Christmas with no changes to the lyrics.
Recording starts now and ends on the 19th of November to give the video editor time to work his magic.
Contact the recorders in game or by other means to join in, either singing the chorus, a verse or the whole thing.

Recorders:
SEA - Noxsea
EU - Karkeys, Uzugu
NA - Azuth

The more recorders the merrier, if you don't feel like you or your friends are covered by the names above, contact Karkeys to join the list of recorders.
If you want to get a feel for what the finished product will be like, here's the song from last year: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLWV08ftkBE

My Meta Quest has arrived, some things i did:
> watched /t/ 30Gbs javs on heresphere, damn those japs know how to do hot stuff, it pisses me off is censored
> played beat saber, default songs are meh, i'll have to sideload custom ones because I'm getting bored if i dont love the song I'm playing
> Downloaded VRChat and joining public instances, I'm too shy while I'm getting used to stuff, looks like I'll have to buy a visor-fan because the heat sucks.
> tried to work using virtual desktop for working, so far is nice but again the heat is annoying
What other cool stuff can i do with it? for VRChat I dont want to do anything else until I make my own custom avatar on Unity, I have an idea but I have to get decent at modeling first in blender. Thrill of the fight is on my radar as well. Maybe I'll develop for it too, Im a programmer so may as well do something for it.

Blade and Sorcery never gets old for me and it's kind of a game that's very easy to get in and get out of, physics-based weapon combat is just too fun no matter how much of a tech demo sandbox game is overall. You can start Into the Radius, it's a wonderful piece of vidya, or do obligatory Alyx playthrough. If you like dev stuff, I found it very fun through years to have my shitty little VR Unity project where I was adding completely random shit whenever I wanted to check how something feels in game.

EU Assetto Corsa: European Racing club
Race 109

19:00 UTC 20:00 CET, 17th of November

Welcome to the mini-pre-Christmas season! We're back at sensibly priced sporty cars. This time: 200HP, FWD Honda Civics. At Kicevo, it's gonna be bumpy.

60 minute practice
12 minutes qualifiers
14 laps race

Afterwards some more Japanese kino TOUGE part 3.

If you just bought Assetto - grab Assetto Corsa Content Manager - a better launcher and mod manager: https://assettocorsa.club/content-manager.html To install mods: just drag and drop zip files from mega onto the Content Manager windows and click on the hamburger menu on top right. Highly recommend installing stable custom shader patch and 7-zip plugin in Content manager.

For communication we'll use mumble at voice.vrg.party port 64738, as it doesn't need any registrations or logins.

People who let theirs talk to the internet at all are dumb, mine hasn't in 6 months and it just werks as a PCVR solution. The only thing the Frame has over the Q3 for comfort is they were smart enough to move the battery to the back of the headset which makes it more balanced, but conversely means that you're stuck with that headstrap which is probably fine since it looks comfy

On wifi6 you can easily push 150-200mbps and I really don't see any compression artifacts at all. I can notice like jpg artifacting at 80-85 quality very easily. I guess I'm just in VRChat so there is never really any high frequency noise but I don't think compression is as bad as people make it out to be.

I like the number of buttons on the controllers but I wish there was a dial/touchpad for other uses. It will be very bad if you need to glue a vive tracker to it for space calibrator.pr44gw

Posted elsewhere but:

When compared to a quest 3:
-Index audio and microphone
-Twin radios for handling pcvr streaming and wireless connectivity seperately
-An adapter that replaces the need for a $200 router
-Running linux instead of meta spyware
-A built in battery
-An actual strap
-An expansion port clearly intended for mouth tracking
-Eye tracking
-Controller based finger tracking
-Functions in the dark
-An SD card slot which presumably means up-gradable storage
-A newer generation processor and double the ram
-50g+ lighter than a quest 3 with the shitty soft strap
-Worse passthrough due to being monochrome presumably
-Audio integrated into the strap which looks better for vr snoozing
-144hz

It's functionally a lighter open source quest 3 with all of the random addons you'd have to spend several hundred dollars for but not running literal spyware. An overall mixed bag for sure but absolutely nowhere close to being directly comparable to a q3 in terms of value. A lot will rest on the quality of the eyetracking/lenses and how valve works with that to do the foveated rendering. If they manage to solve the massive issues that most wireless headsets currently having with major artifacting/latency then this would be revolutionary on top of everything else. The only real disappointment is the lack of native lighthouse tracking and lack of oled which is definitely a mixed bag but the value is easily there. Assuming mouth tracking modules come eventually this is functionally an upgrade in every possible way to a q3/qpro outside of the color passthrough on the q3 and the oled of the qpro. I think it strikes a decent balance though price will matter a lot. I'd pay 1200-1300 for this no questions asked but not 1500. At 800-1000 this would be a steal at 1500 it would be a major letdown. Conceptually the idea of being able to just plug a dongle into my laptop while at work or traveling and have functionally full pcvr without wires or hassle sounds very nice.

I take this ‘cheaper than Index’ statement to mean cheaper than the $1,000 ‘full kit’ cost of Index, which included the headset, controllers, and two tracking beacons. The Index headset alone, however, costs $500.

Yes, I've done it for 5 years. The questlets and wirelesskeks tend to have more cables than I do because of all the fucking batteries they have to strap to themselves. Having one cable go off the back of the headset is an extremely small price to pay for the sheer reliability of it.

Foveated encoding may be great, but foveated rendering impact it's over stated, you can't go too low or it is clearly noticeable, your brain can pickup those details like a big ass pixel quickly changing from dark to light as you slightly move your head.
You can try it on skyrim vr, I did back then and even on a quest 2 with fresnel where you are meant to keep your eyes looking forwards you could notice it immediately.
And the improvement in performance was not that big, maybe 50% at most and that is pushing it.

There's that angle. Death of the roman empire angle; it never really died it just evolved into something else. Because... the headset IS a PC. It's not android, it's a full linux PC, so any VR that runs on it is by definition PC VR. Plus the intention is to get people to play flat games on it... but I think they dropped the ball a bit. It needed SOCIAL flat games. It needed a way to play flat games in the same VR room as your friends.

It actually does make sense, even the newest, most powerful Zen 5 APUs you see in those expensive chink handheld PCs aren't powerful enough for 4k gaming (and resolution and sharpness matter A LOT when you have thr screen right in front of your eyes, a 1080p game window will look like ass in a virtual environment), so might as well get something more power efficient. And as you said, you'll likely be able to play Android and maybe Quest games. Those XR Snapdragons have dedicates cores to offload tracking and cameras from the CPU, but the Gen 3 in the Frame is more powerful than XR2 in Quest 2, so it should just brute force through that.

But even if we assume 50%, the increase from index resolution to quest 3/steam frame eats it all up, plus the target device is now a 4060 equivalent gpu with 6 cores, modern vr games will target it and even with a 50% increase in performance thanks to the foveated rendering, you will be lucky if the steam machine can run hl alyx at native resolution in a quest 3/steam frame.
