All the old virtual worlds for kids were fads that died because “kids don’t give money” as said by Toontown directors. They only existed because they were the new thing at the time but they couldn’t survive because of the wholesome market.

What do we have now? Nothing, there are no safe spaces for children on the internet anymore. Old virtual worlds had heavy moderation and even some pedagogical design (internet safety). They were social spaces where kids could practice self-expression and have fun in a protected environment with their peers. The rest of the internet could stay like it was because between forums and moshi monsters kids will always choose the latter.

Now the only way to make online spaces for children is through predatory design, draining every ounce of attention from them, that’s why kids today inhabit Roblox or scroll-type short form sludge (TikTok, YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels) to sell their data. That’s the only way companies get money out of children.

Roblox survived while Toontown, Club Penguin, Animal Jam, and Neopets didn’t because it was built on UGC and had it's own market. But there’s no incentive for users to make educational experiences, no incentive to keep kids safe, no incentive for anything besides profit. Roblox will never go back on this keeps pushing this further accessories are UGC, bundles are UGC, emotes are UGC. Games were always UGC, but now the old events are gone, replaced by brand-sponsored games or “game hunts” (UGC again).

Look at a game like Fortnite that has built its sucess on kids making its own content, but it too made billions with UGC. And UGC driven games don’t care about moderation and with the passing of time moderation only becomes more passive to give more “freedom” (degeneracy) to UGC, proven by recent Roblox statements.

Roblox will never become a safe space for kids. There will never be safe spaces for kids. The unmoderated market is grooming children on the internet.

The kids i know in my (third world) country that hasn't standardized parental control (much less those tablets "for kids") get a regular ass phone at 5 to play brookhaven and do tiktok dances. I get to think about this often because i study especial education and i can see how fruitless have been the pedagogical projects here that want to create apps with educational intent but they just flop.

I'm wishing for safe virtual worlds for children because its a way to make a common experiences that prepares them for the greater internet world, the same role schools serve in society. Virtual worlds can help kids better understand basic skills with technology, to better express themselves, to know other kids from other places, the same things Roblox today provides but with safety. There are a lot of benefits to society and children in having a Club Penguin around.

Also if you put the monthly users in Whyville, woozwordl, scholastic's Home Base, even the remains of Neopets, Animal Jam and others together you wont even get to 1% of Roblox's monthly users. Its no use, Roblox sweeps the market, kids don't have a choice.
