I see the whole 'emergency ration' meme used a lot when a character is learning to get along with their pokemon and they'll say it in some kind of snarky manner, but I've yet to read a single story where they're forced to actually carry it out. They scrap away the worst off areas in the burn and then a mixture of Ditto protocells along with high energy nutrient sludge (derived mostly from berries) are applied to the wound, then a healing procedure (usually done by a chancey) is applied to the zone to promote regeneration of tissue.

Then the patient rests for a few months (3 to 5 weeks at minimum depending on the severity of the damage) with a high nutrition diet along with regylar healing sessions from available pokemon.

While the remaining pain is not as excruciating as times previous to the development of the treatment, there are still chances of patients to experience chronic discomforts for up to several years after the event (the pains range from itching, muscle cramps and similar things.)

Ditto cells treatment as a concept are pretty convenient. Kinda want to expand on it.

Ditto cells are widely used in medical treatment but have their limitations. DCells specialize in imitations which allows a wide range of potential uses however it is where what they can't imitate is where the issue lies.

One such problem are "levels". Colloquially referred to as Levels, they are a way of measuring the general strength of a Pokemon. One should take an exact number of a Pokemon's level with a grain of salt but it is important to be able to gauge about where a Pokemon's strength lies.

Simply put, the stronger the Pokemon, the more egotistical it becomes. A stronger Pokemon's body can sense DCells harvested from a Ditto of low level and as a result can reject the cells leading to an allergic response from the body. The same applies to if a weaker Pokemon is given DCells from a higher Level Ditto. DCells can become cancerous and attempt to overcome or parasitize the body. That is why it is important for Trainers to not lie about how strong their Pokemon are so that such accidents do not happen.

There can come a time when Level matching is no longer enough for the Pokemon's body to recognize the DCells as it's own and assimilate it into it's body. This is especially true in Gym Leader and Champion tier Pokemon, whose levels have grown far above the typical Ditto raised for medical purposes. Scientists have recognized that DCells also come in two sets of traits, nature and characteristic. There are 25 Natures and 30 Characteristics that DCells can come in. Leading to a total of 750 different combinations. Matching these traits allow for better compatibility and a reduced risk in DCell rejection. However scientists have yet to catalog whether or not other Pokemon share the same Characteristics, leading to psuedo-informal tests that gauge compatibility based on personality traits. The success of these tests are less than desirable.

I'm borrowing/modifying bits and pieces of the anime and Pokemon Tabletop for my power/scaling system.

One thing I wonder though, is what to do about "environmental" moves. For example, should a Pokemon be allowed to Sand-Attack in a clean hallway that has no sand? Same thing for moves like Mud-Slap, Surf, Rock Slide, etc.

Do most semi-realistic combat systems just disallow a Pokemon from using those moves, or do they allow Pokemon to "manifest" things like Sand/Mud/Water/Small Rocks?

The videogames implicitly do the latter, but there is some precedent for the former with abilities like Desolate Land, where the harsh heat/drought just causes Water-type attacks to fail completely. Can't use Surf if all the water is dried up.

Weaker pokemon and pokemon learning to use a move of a new type have to rely on environmental conditions, while stronger pokemon and pokemon that have mastered an environmental move can make the stuff out of their type energy.
You could even have a part (gym battle, maybe?) where a weak mon does the advanced version at an extreme energy cost and knocks themselves out.

You can't create matter out of nothing, so they're always teleporting stuff. It's teleporting all the way down. Really strong moves, even physical ones, that don't immediately make their user explode from recoil and from being in their radius? Yeah, probably going to go with this, Pokemon are reality-warping to an extent, so they can expend some sort of energy to manifest physical material. Something like manifesting a handful of sand or some mud would have a lower stamina cost than manifesting a wave of water or a plume of lava. After a certain level of attainment a Sand-Attack expert does not need sand, as the mere flick of their paw can carry Sand-Attack intent.

Got this idea for a Gen 1 story that begins at the Cinnabar islands Pokemon Mansion. Events of the first movie pretty much where Mewtwo is born and blows up the Mansion. But instead of stopping to meet Giovanni, Mewtwo immediately retreats and Giovanni and his Team Rocket arrive at the scene moments later. Giovanni marvels at the destruction Mewtwo had reigned upon the Mansion and tells his grunts to occupy the caves of Kanto and keep a watchful eye at the Casinos. And he'll move forward in his talks with the Silph co. Giovanni says to himself "The great Doctor and owner of this Mansion is probably gone. I don't know what made him want to create such a monster. But don't worry you old fool. I'll make sure your scientific efforts will be put to good use." Giovanni does not underestimate Mewtwo's power but swears that one day that power will be his. And he knows the one thing that will make his dreams a reality. And from above, the Pokemon Mew sees all of this and looks beyond the waters and flies to Pallet town. In a dream someone hears the faint cry of Mew. That cry turns into words. It's saying "Please... help." And we find Red waking up from that dream and leaves home for his first adventure.

I'm struggling with this too but I've watched a bunch of YT vids to try and figure out a foundation. First is to make sure the fight is going to affect the plot meaningfully. Second is to figure out the dynamic, strong vs weak, strong vs strong, etc. The former might involve a cathartic stomp or underhanded tactics, the latter would probably be a big, bombastic fight with advance techniques, varied tactics and multiple layers of deception. Third is to avoid writing "blow-by-blow". You don't want to write like "A used Water Gun, but B deflected it. Then B used Ember and A evaded it. Then A used Water gun again but B deflected it again." Fourth is to try and break the fight into phases to keep things interesting. Phase 1: Feeling each other out with scouting attacks or goading. Phase 2: Both sides using the info to make an opening. Phase 3: Maybe the favored fighter finds a strategy that works and the disadvantaged fighter has to play defensive and cook up a new approach. Final Phase: a decisive blow, etc.

If I assume you’re talking about the actual writing aspect. I’d say go look at Borne of Caution fights for getting into the literary side of it. The fights with Andre and the Lavaridge gym leader really stand out to me as far as battle-prose.

But if you’re talking about staging fights and how to do compelling one’s, I’d unironically say watch anime fights. Usually it’s “Fighter A has the upper hand on Fighter B, Fighter B does something to counter it, B has the upper hand now, Fighter A has to counter,” and so on and so fourth. This is really conducive to Pokemon battles, especially when considering type matchups.

This may be a hot take, but generally avoiding “blow by blow” might not be the best for battles in the Pokémon genre specifically. Those YouTube vids were likely made with hand to hand or sword on sword fights in mind. It’s easy for fights like that to drag since it’s largely the same thing happening, which is why avoiding blow by blow makes sense. For Pokémon, any move can become a devastating critical hit or a surprise super effective move. Now mind you, if it’s two low-level Pokémon that only know Tackle, I’d say avoid blow by blow (but why bother writing this fight anyways?). Unlike the video games, space and distance matter, so write about that. Maybe a physical attacker has to figure out how to close the distance whereas the opposing special attacker is trying to snipe/do area denial. You can also break the fight up with Trainers' thoughts, like:

Just write cool shit. Describe the cool parts of the fight and gloss over the boring details that the reader will fill in with their imagination.

Some things I keep in mind when writing battles. Understand the speed of the battle. Some attacks are going to be quick, some are going to have weight. If your throwing in a lot of attacks and clashes don't be afraid to leave the descriptions for each individual attack sparse. Letting the reader move quickly past the attack will simulate the spead of the attack. For bigger attacks add more gravitas to the description. A weavile making a lot of slashes to wear down something can build up to the final blow where the same slash gets a lot more descriptive room in the text because even the difference it serves to the text is whats important.

Actually, criminals still have to be cautious about their social reputation but for different reasons than the average person. They may even need to be more aware of it than normies because as a criminal they have less safety nets to catch them if they get a bad reputation. If you're a known thug you will may not care about regular societal customs but you do have to be aware of the customs of the criminal culture you are a part of. So being seen as a coward for turning down pokemon battles to a normie would just be kind of embarrassing. But being seen as a coward in criminal circles means that nobody would trust you and you'll be seen as a easy target.

This is why 'respect' is such a big deal and why gang members will do crazy shit in the name of earning respect. Respect is just a shorthand for 'people know you aren't an easy target'. The more respect you have the less you have to be afraid that some one is going to put you and yours in danger.

How this translates in a Pokemon setting is up to interpretation since we haven't seen much interaction between groups of criminals that aren't all working under one name. But it the same principle does apply in a gang vs law sort of conflict too. 'I'll try to keep it bare bones' is what I typed here, but then I typed up a lot of random shit. Got sick, said fuck it and went to a midnight release of a game, got sicker, coughed really hard. Finally get sent home with a tube hanging from my chest to still keep letting air out. Month off of work, hell yeah. Best part I invited my friend cause he had to see this. Every time I coughed the tube made a mooing sound. Shit was hilarious. Almost worth the sciatica I probably got from flailing during surgery.
