They should have just ported the game with these kind of new camera and aiming options, while touching up the character models. Maria looks a bit like a fish-frog lady, rather than the Cameron Diaz clone that she is. There's a mod that fixes that.

Silent Hill isn't a fixed camera game, it's third person 3D behind the character with the ability to rotate it. People are conflating it with Resident Evil. Tapping examine will reset the camera behidn the character.

OTS is also third person, but focused on their right shoulder. The Zealot camera mod is fully customizable, and something like Max Payne where the character is centered is probably more akin to what Sh2 should have had.

You don't have the ability to rotate it while you move, you just put it behind you with L2. You can't control the camera freely except when standing still and moving your head, and the framing isn't always the same, it changes drastically depending on the area you are in (not even talking about the fixed camera scenes/locations which are all unique). This mod just turns the game into a new Sony experience, stripping it of every detail and uniqueness it has, just move the camera with right stick and move your character with left. I hate this homogenization so much, but it is what it is, gamers are fucking faggots.

Interesting. While I love SH2 to death and consider it one of my all time favorite games I would still love it if there was a way to balance the normal and hard modes a little better but I don't know if something like that is even possible. That would definitely be a "remake" I could actually get behind though.

SH2 and SH3 both run in the same engine so I guess it could theoretically be possible. You could even port the Closers since they're basically the same model as Mandarins anyway. Some of the endings and a perfect 10-star run require James and/or Maria to take as little damage as possible and you can tell they were pressed for time trying to strike the right balance. Imagine how frustrating it would be to take a ton of damage from Mannequins in the hotel when you're without weapons for instance.

Sometimes I really wish I had the tech know-how to do this myself desu.

Don't their speed and AI also change a little on the first Extra though? How hard would it be to tweak something like that like the timings of attacks and aggression? I know it's been done before for other games but I don't know if it's as simple as just changing some numbers, backporting or if it would require the source code.

I've also noticed that outdoors post-hospital in SH2 some of the Lying Figures/Nurses will actually walk faster than others at least on hard and if you play Born From a Wish the Mannequins will behave differently than in the main game depending on if you approach them with your gun or your cleaver equipped. If the former they will come to you but if the latter they will stand still in the same spot and wait for you to come to them before attacking. Mary is similar IIRC she will use her moth swarm on you less if you have the shotgun instead of the rifle. I think this is what they couldn't figure out how to properly program in time that type of dynamic behavior.

That was made later, and likely has updated code, so there's minor changes like that. I noticed that items can be found actually placed on top of field models like in the back of trucks, which doesn't occur in the main game where they're always on the ground.

Speaking of the rifle, and i know this is a now 24 year old game: What niche does it hold? it's so slow and awkward to use, and most bosses are in tiny arenas where it's hard to use. The shotgun is a much better weapon for most of the game.

I guess what I'm getting at it is that the Lying Figures, Mannequins, Nurses and Mandarins in particular are all programmed to start attacking too early. Lying Figure is an easy fix because you just increase the range of its puke attack without changing the threshold of the range James/Maria needs to be within before it starts attacking but you can't do the same with the other three. But that's really all you'd have to do.

I can see the logic behind it though since being swarmed by a group could easily lead to getting stunlocked and taking lots of damage since the hit animation is slow to play out and there are no iframes either and you still have Maria to take care of too and the requirements for some of the endings depend on your and Maria's health but it's not super well thought out trying to account for every scenario at once.

>>11840534
The rifle is actually slightly faster to use than the shotgun but I think the damage is the same. I could usually manage to get two shots in with the rifle before getting hit when fighting duo PH which I could never do with the shotgun but you can finish them faster this way because enemies actually regenerate themselves ever so slightly the longer you take between your shots. This happens in the first two games on hard at least. The easiest way to notice this is if you have to reload automatically after firing only 2 shots from your handgun on any of the common enemies who require between 3-5 shots to put down normally making you have to shoot 3-5 times more after the animation has played out as if you never fired those couple of shots to begin with.

>>11840735
Not quite I think it only happens indoors. Mannequins always unfreeze by attacking in the direction they're standing once you "activate" them and there's always a slight delay before it then starts moving toward you but then it's absolutely relentless too.

Small correction: the attacking too early pattern actually works if you're trying to run past them and get too close they will almost always be able to hit you but that's because of their decision to prioritize the narrative so there aren't any faster exclusively outdoors enemies anymore like dogs or flying creatures something they semi-solved by SH3 but most enemies are generally also pretty easy to avoid there. You can find the Closers both indoors and outdoors but they're slow as shit and have a very small hitbox so you can literally stand in front of one and not take damage even if it touches you with its arm whereas the Pendulums are like dogs except very loud and noisy and kind of bulky so much easier to avoid too but the doggos are agile and will also grab and bite you this time Resident Evil style unlike in SH1. I do kind of wish there were more crawling Lying Figures outside and they were better at homing in on you like the Creepers but again they also crawl indoors and are very fast in that form. All of the Silent Hill games have their issues at the end of the day but I still love them all.

There's been advances in OCR translation by AI, so I'm just running it through Google translate. It periodically fumbles but it's mostly understandable.

There's a lot of nuances of gameplay mechanics that almost no one ever discusses. So which attacks CAN be blocked anyways? What is the percentage of enemy revival? etc.

Cool, thanks. It's weird they don't even tell you about the blocking mechanic in the manual for SH2 so it just feels like an afterthought even though it isn't really in practice but the gameplay loop doesn't revolve around that mechanic like it does in 3 either. I only accidentally found out about it when fighting Eddie in phase 2 but I found it hard to reliably get the timing right with his punches.

It's not well explained, and it has an awkward control scheme in 2 since you need to lower your weapon around the enemy to block which is the opposite of what someone is going to do. In SH3, you need to raise your weapon then hit x, which fits more what you're gonna do in combat.

most horror games have always had shit gameplay/controls. That's why they don't lean into combat at all and mainly make you avoid it.
horror games with good combat and fluid controls are just action games with some horror elements.

Incorrect.
They have GREAT, addicting gameplay, and the controls are part of it. I still replay OG Silent Hill 1-2 and RE1-3 from time to time, and they're just as great as they always were.

They are NOT combat games, they WANT you to feel vulnerable in order to actually feel afraid and avoid unnecessary conflict.

SH uses a high-altitude "on rails" type "fixed" cameras. Fixed does not always mean "stationary"; even RE Code Veronica and Outbreak did something similar.

And if you claim that this sort of early 00s 3rd person view is in any way the same shit as the RE4 / TLOU style over-shoulder sloppa, then you are indeed just another mouth breathing zoomie.

the controls in them are shit and wonky, that's why they're good as horror games.
Removing the tank controls in the RE remake and having good combat makes the game way less scary

>the controls in them are shit and wonky
There's absolutely nothing shit nor wonky about them.
The only thing potentially shit is the player.

>removing tank controls in the RE remake having good combat
Again, stop dictating what is "good" or "bad" with your Dark Souls era zoomer hot takes.

Once again: combat is not the main focus of survival horror games.
Yet you DO have to fight from time to time, in which case you are the underdog. But via honest effort and mastery, anyone not mentally limited can learn how to deal with any encounter effectively. Most of it simply boils down to sitting down, planning a head, scaling risks and rewards, and making mental notes whenever anything new and out of ordinary pops out.

tl;dr: Resident Evil has great gameplay, and they are some of the most endlessly replayable games.

SH2 and RE2-4 demakes absolutely butchered the gameplay, pacing and replay value with their generic as fuck, action-oriented designs that everyone loathed already 15 years ago.

you have more freedom with it than SH1 but it's still fixed camera angles for the most part, places like the apartments or the town are the exception and not the rule. even in the hospital getting the camera to swap 180 degrees so you can see in front of you is a laborious chore because the camera is dead set on being stuck in the angle it's programmed to even if it somewhat allows you to move the camera.
