Battletoads on NES
I love this game. I should be able to beat it within a month or so. I’m on level 9 (Terra Tubes) which is supposed to be one of the hardest levels. Do you think it’s one of the hardest games ever made? I think it’s hard as hell but mostly fair. The only problem spots for me are the platform hit boxes. Sometimes I think I can make the jump but I’m not close enough to the center. The beat-em-up combat also feels awkward sometimes but it’s not too bad.

it was play tested on an actual child and isn't really that difficult

I think it actually is but I don't play shmups and brutally hard arcade games like Baraduke for example. As far as non-shmup games made specifically for home consoles go I think Battletoads is one of the most difficult ones for sure

Once you know all the "gotcha" moments, which you learn by dying, the game isn't so hard. The final boss is a bitch though, I swore to god sometimes she just decides "well fuck you", pulls some i-frame out of her ass to fuck you up, and there is nothing you can do about it. Maybe there is a trick to it but I couldn't find one

Protip: you can grind score for lives against those guys in the final level, assuming you haven't max'd out your score yet, which if you managed to reach that point without using a continue you would have.
Anonymous No.11929445 [Report]
If it had unlimited continues most people could beat it, it just has lot of areas where enemies push you off of a platform. I think its great but if the graphics weren't so good I wouldn't bother going to the trouble of beating it. Terra Tubes might be one of my fav levels.

It requires a lot of memorization and trial and error since plenty of deadly hazards can only be avoided if you position yourself correctly, but overall at least it's fun to play. Other memorization-based levels like Volkmire's Inferno in its late sections are 100% a drag once you've learned them.

It's a great game most of the time but a couple of levels like that could have been cut and the game would overall be better for it. In most of my casual runs I simply take the Karnath's Lair warp since Inferno and that one are plain boring for me by this point.

Beaten it as a child once and never wanted to do that again. Tried it again as an adult and was like nah fuck that.

I just didn't know better. Now I see BT as 4/10 game at best and don't wanna waste my time on it.

It's only common sense to assume that in a middle point of that chronology you also stopped 9/11 and everybody clapped, good for you anon

It's a weird game because there's not really a middle ground: you kinda instantly jump between DESPERATELY needing extra lives and continues to learn as much of the later levels as you can before you have to start all over, or you have already got to the point where you won't need credits at all because you will only fuck up a handful of times at most throughout the run.

I love the game, but I wish it didn't so transparently rely on that kind of "gotcha" design you describe; the penultimate level is literally designed to mow players down almost instantly until they get there with enough of a buffer of extra lives to "get" how it works, and suddenly it becomes yet another chore level.

This. Once you played it enough to master it, you'll realize that luck isn't a big deal here, except for some stuff like the whirlpools on the surf level and the fishes and sharks on the tubes. The rest is up to your skill.

JP version is more fun imo

Limited continues are antifun garbage
Anonymous No.11929887 [Report]

Not really; imo it's a neat 50/50 between genuine skill buildup and plain memorization. That's not necessarily a flaw most of the time; it's just a design philosophy that's become kinda obsolete.

Get good at juggling birds in the Wookie Hole. Terra Tubes is the best level. Head-butt everything.

I disagree. It is a major part of what makes the game worth coming back to. Being able to slightly improve with each run is a good feeling and it gives you plenty of chances to master the earlier levels which adds even more satisfaction in the long run

There's no shortage of ways to get points-based extra lives; the problem is that once you max your score (and any minimally experienced player can do that by halfway or 2/3 through the game) you can't get any more that way until you continue.

That's why I like the birds, not exactly point based...just gotta keep em up.

For me, the only battletoads videogame that is "hard as hell but still mostly fair" is battletoads and double dragon for super nintendo.

Based Battletoads enjoyer. Battletoads is in impossible tier for most normies, and while it does put a fight, it pales in comparison to Double Dragon III, Adventure Island 1, Arkanoid, and Star Force, and that's me not including kusoge like Ikari Warriors.

>Double Dragon III

Really? I was trying for 1CCs on that about a decade ago and I got pretty close to the end. When I quit it was because I didn't like the game that much and I'd become tired of it, not because it was too hard. Battletoads though, that one was too hard. I mean I'll probably get a 1CC eventually, but not yet.

That one is VERY easy in comparison with battletoads.

Yeah it's not too hard. The thing about NES DD3 is that it has an inverse difficutly curve so it might seem like the hardest fucking ever at first. The two first levels are the hardests and once you got good and managed to beat them, the rest of the game will be much easier.

It's fake Dark Souls difficulty, where you have infinite continues and checkpoints everywhere.

It's been quite a while since I've beaten Double Dragon III, but I recall enemy aggression and spacing not letting up ever as the game progresses. One wrong move could be ruins for your health bar. Maybe I was just never good at Chin's iron claw. Most of Battletoad's difficulty stems from gotchas that are trumped by memorization. There are only a few sections I find executionally challenging in it.

Yeah if you get cornered they just won't stop, so you need to make sure that doesn't happen

I never considered this game a beat em up and more so an action game in the vein of something similar to ninja gaiden and I think that helped me get through the game originally.
I don't think it's super hard, but I love the game so maybe I'm biased.
just avoid the genesis version, hitboxes are funky as fuck

Any game you can beat with less than six months of consistent practice isn't in contention for hardest anything.
Anonymous No.11934459 [Report]
I really don't know what is it about this game that consistently results in a bizarre combination of defensive contrarianism and delusional flexing from both people who enjoy it AND those who don't.

Anyway, I wonder whether if the nerfed Japanese version had been the official Western release the game would have become less of a meme.

Ive beaten the game with no continues on original hardware and i wanna help you OP. Learning battletoads was one of the funnest 2 weeks ive done in gaming

stage 9 in my opinion is one of the hardest stages alongside 12. Theres not much to teach you in that stage aside from learning to jump over the 2 ducks and then punch the third and immediately jump over it

the rest of stage 9 is just learning through muscle memory. What i want to warn you about is stage 10. Stage 10 is BRUTAL until you understand the final race and its not that hard and is actually one of the easier stages. The first 2 rat races are easy and basically are tutorials. The final one is insane. All i wanna warn you about on the final rat race is that when you are ahead and get to the very long hallways that makes him catch up, learn to running dash him right before he falls in the hole and repeat until you can just fall down to boss. You dont have to face the other way, just face forward and when the rat approaches, your hitbox just dash attack towards the wall. You need to learn this otherwise the game is impossible

stage 11 isnt bad just reflexes and is easy to learn. Stage 12 is very fucking hard but again its just trial and error. The final boss is janky but youll learn that the safe spot to hit her is her foot when shes above you

good luck OP. If you have any questions im here to answer

Oh yeah and one more think OP, DONT SKIP STAGE 2. I never skip early stages anyways to gain a massive collection of oneups but stage 2 you can get like 5. Once you get a weapon to wack the crows, learn to wack their dead floating body gaining points until you gain a 1 up. You can get like 5 of them from just wacking the crows. Points are good too but you cap at the end of the game
