I'm sure the translation patch of Bare Knuckle III makes the game harder to resemble the western version a bit more. It always feels off whenever I play it and struggle conserving my lives in the hardest difficulty compared to the vanilla JP game.

Translation of Samurai Shodown RPG for Neo Geo CD did an interesting thing. They have patched in changes to make the game less grindy, but they put it behind console region setting. If your console thinks it is Japanese, the game plays like vanilla. If you have an American console, an easy mode gets activated.
In the age of emulation this thing is easily controllable and if you are not stupid, you have Universe BIOS installed which lets you change region on the fly.

So today I'm playing the western version in hard and it feels easier than the patched BK3 in very hard, how weird. There are definitely fewer enemies in it. It's puzzling because there's nowhere stating the difficulty changes of the translation patch, so I don't know if it wasn't intended, or tested in the hardest difficulty, an emulator bug or what. Patched BK3 doesn't have some of the most annoying quirks of SoR3 (namely, bosses having an endless number of lifebars, and enemy attacks causing more damage), but it keeps some of the unfavorable stuff from BK3 (bigger penalty for using specials with a depleted bar, slower rolling) while amping up enemy aggressiveness and numbers. There are also more changes under the hood, like some bosses being less cheesable (notoriously Shiva and Robo-Axel) with some of their attacks and patterns having modified priorities.

The 3 worst examples of this:
NeoDemiforce Final Fantasy 2 (1998)
J2e Final Fantasy 4 (2001)
RPGe Final Fantasy 5 (1998)

FF5 isn't as bad as the other two, but the tl;dr is:
>FF4 already got an official release on the original hardware, there's nothing wrong with the official translation
>FF2 and FF5 got releases on PS1, there's nothing wrong with the official translation.
>a bunch of IRCfags start saying these translations are censored and need to be re-translated
>decide they will "re-translate" them themselves
>10 "script revisers" and "hackers"
>1 translator
>the translator was just some kid in a high school Japanese class
>the translation is obviously just an edit of the original script
>added swearing
>added pandering for Final Fantasy shippers
>added pop culture references
>entire conversations replaced with fanfiction

People recommended them over the official releases for years, until everyone suddenly realized that FFIV isn't supposed to have references to Brittany Spears and William Shatner in it.

>>11930241
People put up with that insufferable bastard for so long because at least he actually knew Japanese, unlike the J2e/NeoDemiforce clowns. SMT community telling him to FUCK OFF instead of kissing his ass the way most other RPG communities would is one of the things I'm most proud of as an SMT fan.

Why do dumb kids think games having any semblance of design sensibility is some novel thing and old video games were all flashes in the pan? Games are an ancient concept. Rules and fairness are pretty universal. Video games didn't just suddenly start having thought put into their design just because you started realizing they did. It was always there.

Yeah, bullshit. 4's typeface was way too huge and kind of chopped out text, while 5's PS1 localization was notoriously fucky, from Faris' pirate speak to the Y Burn stuff, etc. It's simply crap stuffed between 4 and 6 being at least decent.
Anonymous No.11934126

That stuff may be true, but these weren't the guys to fix it.
The FF4 patch in particular expands the textboxes into the overscan area because they only tested on emulators, meaning if you try to play it on hardware and a real TV, the text is completely unreadable.

Faris' pirate speak can be excused since she's supposed to sound gruff and there's no real equivalent to stereotypical pirate speech in Japanese ('just make it sound manly' 90% of the time).
Though the reason why the PlayStation translation of Final Fantasy V was so rough was bevause it was borrowed from the unfinished one used for the canceled outsourced PC port (could be the same person who did as FFIIUS, and it was -not- Ted Woolsey as falsely reported by weebshitters): https://web.archive.org/web/20071025133744fw_/http://www.warmech.net/special/ff5pcinterview/ff5pcinterview.html

I..honestly do not know what the hell was wrong with these people and that game. I surmise it mainly came down to Tomato being way too lenient and the first "big" post-rpgone hack being extremely underresearched when it started, stuff happened, and then nearly everyone except those who already started making Tomato-based hacks gave up on honest translation discourse and just went with the underresearched hack anyway because the author at least took in criticism/competition.

Rushing Beat Shura actually has different routes, including bad endings, so not knowing what anyone is saying kind of hinders that. And The Peace Keepers butchered what plot was there while fucking with all sorts of things, removing a large amount of the music (which doesn't have the remainders on by default, in favor of ambient noise), digitized actors for portraits, etc.

Man I hate fan dubs. Like, there's something autistic enough about the Tales community to do it for at least one game, the fact that someone's trying it for another is even more ridiculous- I imagine it took less effort to actually just add subtitles to the voiced sequences for the PS1 version of Phantasia, than it would be to try to get someone to dub voice lines and then crunchify it for getting into the SFC game data itself.

Don't care since I just play the original in Japanese

>hahaha get it the joke is RICK ROLL lmao. now laugh!
most of all, it happens inside a MUSIC STUDIO so this could not have possibly been an accident.

At least someone made a uncensored patch to this one (Imagine that, having to make an uncensored patch to a fan translation).

Those two guys are called Burikki and Gorikki in Japanese and they have a move called BuriGoriRoRa. Not translating it as Rikki Roller would be stupid, even if there was no internet meme with a similar name.

>only real version with no bullshit attached is a version that has two separate translation teams fighting over it
It's also the version with fucked up music.

>and there's potential game-stopping bugs in both translations

Why? I don't mean the other parts, I mean picking the SNES version and not literally any other version which are all better.

I don't care. I'm not going play their raped and mangled version, no matter what the game is. Working Designs were bad game deisgners and even worse localizers. They deserved to out of business.

ToP Snes plays quite differently compared to the other versions. I think that makes it quite interesting.
Also, the translation contains some really shitty added humour.
