I'm perfectly capable of understanding historical context. Design trends, technological advancements, critical reception, even fairly mundane stuff like sales figures and mergers and acquisitions, are all important pieces of the puzzle. Having played these games in 1989 surrounded by wood-paneling isn't, however. It's (sincerely) very cool that you were there, but it's also discursively meaningless (and often counter-productive). These games have a legacy ahead of them that'll long outlive the contexts you, and even I enjoyed them in. I think that's cool.

I can go to Google scholar and read dozens of quality technical analyses on the works of film makers like Ozu and Bergman. The same can't currently be said for video games, but I suspect that'll change in the coming decades (it's already kind of changing, however most of the work currently being done is just questionable literary analysis, rather than thoughtful examinations of game design. There is some good philosophy being written on the nature of games, however). Most good film criticism didn't come about until a decade or two after the greats had already died. I suspect game criticism will follow suit.

I think RndStranger's video series Famidaily is more or less identical to what you've shared. The move to video reviews makes sense: video games have a visual component to them, so it's much easier to convey information about them visually than through text.

However, I think we might be talking past each other. I hope this doesn't read as pedantic to you, but I think there's a meaningful difference between a review and a critique. Criticism (as I see it, anyways) is the process of establishing a set of presuppositions, and then repeatedly and systematically applying them to many different works. What results isn't so much an opinion piece, but something that should be objectively correct within the fixed system of assumptions that produced the critique (emphasis on the caveat of "within the fixed system of assumptions that produced the critique").

Both the review space and the critical space are important, but I'm mostly interested in the latter rather than the former.
