I think the gc could have sold at least another 5 million units if it had stronger hardware to run games like GTA and Burnout 3

it'd sell another 300000 consoles max. the cube's flaws run too deep

Fun fact: that forum post is actually a quote from a guy who says he works for Nintendo, not Richard Parr the actual programmer for Burnout 3.

Literally noone cares. The ps layout hasn't become the expected standard yet. Besides ithe triggers each have another button if you press strong enough, to compensate a bit
>still lacking japanese publisher support besides the moneyhatted capcom 5 and dreamcast ports
Not the core issue, since devs naturally hop onto your system if it gains popularity. For the winner, it keeps getting easier to keep winning in this industry.
>still has the most lackluster output of first party games from any of nintendo's consoles
Was it though?
>still no online
Didn't matter as much yet
>still no backwards compatibility
Neither had xbox. Honestly, matters most to njche hardcore folks anyways. Most people didn't tend to go back to games like this. Not to the extend that it would make or break a system.
>still little cuck discs
Yep. That's the reason. Still don't understand the reasoning behind this

Yes but the vector processor wasn't as powerful and the GPU pipeline wasn't anywhere as programmable as PS2's.

>Wasn't the gamecube stronger than the ps2?
Yes. Every multiplat ported from GCN to PS2 was downgraded in regards to texture resolution and detail, often the sound was lower quality and the framerate was lower as well.

It's kinda dumb to use the xbox, microsoft's first console, as an example for lacking backwards compatibility, what was it supposed to do, play older pc games or something?
Anonymous No.11995710 [Report]
>>11995691
Damn could you imagine if it could? Shit would’ve been rad to be able to install older games like ut99. It was Microsoft they could’ve developed the Xbox w that in mind and it would’ve been pretty interesting, even if it were for a small selection of games where you inserted the disc, put in the security code, and it auto download a patch if you’re connected to the net/xbox live

The "quote" on the right was made by a genuine larper named Rusty, who does nothing but pull a Pirate Software on the Sega-16 forums. Last seen in 2018 getting into a retarded argument over LA Noire's facial capture before disappearing from the internet.
Nothing even lines up here once you look at the information.
>Criterion Games has always been in Guildford, England. Rusty has always lived in Frankfurt, Germany.
>Rusty claims he's "working on the technology behind some of the best known FPS franchises". Of the six lead programmers for Burnout 3, Alex Fry, Dominic Parrott, Olly Read, Ciaran Rooney, Paul Ross, and Hamish Young, only one of them shows an FPS credit after Burnout 3, but the game was Black all the way back in 2006. Furthermore none of those programmers have ever touched the Gamecube during that time, because the Gamecube version of EA games were always outsourced to other companies.
>Rusty has never actually proven his claims of being a developer, whenever he enters a thread he simply states "I was a dev for this game" then begins dumping an unyielding amount of tech spaghetti that nobody in their right mind is going to actually parse. Rusty has never divulged his real identity whatsoever despite years of performing this dance. Even the Thief 2 dev took a moment to make himself known when he was arguing with a user about the source code.
That being said, the Gamecube could've run Burnout 3, it ran Burnout 2 and a shitload of other renderware games just fine once you compressed the textures and audio to fit onto the disc (1.2GB is the real bottleneck).
The actual reason why Burnout 3 wasn't on Gamecube was because Criterion Games was originally making a skateboarding game. They wound up having to scrap it after a year of work, wasting a lot of resources. They were also being bought out by EA at the same time, so understandably they dropped the lowest-priority version to compensate for lost time/money.

The Gamecube had a more powerful CPU and GPU than the PS2. It could have easily ran GTA the problem was that it wouldn't fit on it's stupid fucking discs.

I could maybe believe it if Burnout 3 relied on PS2's insane bandwidth and fill rate but Xbox also got it so that can't be the case.
A Gamecube version would have just had less post processing effects and particles (like Xbox does compared to PS2 as far as I know).

>That post is talking about the cpu with physics, collision detection, ai, and so on
It is, but that's because it's a [sic]'d up retelling of something some guy told him with little context. You can tell because he's saying macro/micro-code which is not a general purpose cpu term used in this context. It refers specifically to the vector unit where the SDK provided some generic "macro" functions for common vectorisable stuff or you could upload your own programs by directly submitting microcode. The [added] stuff tells you the person retelling it didn't understand the meaning behind the terms and made his best guess, but the savvy will know it means the VU.
The gamecube's CPU had a more common vector system where it's just some floating point SIMD instructions which will always be slower than a stream processor. But often the difference is not that extreme in practice because VUs require you to spend time formatting the data, waiting for the results then unpacking it before putting it to use. SIMD the data tends to wind up exactly where you need it. The PS2 had some good designs though if you wanted the results to go straight to the GS you could and save a LOT of CPU time. But largely that was because it needed that to make up for the lack of geometry transform hardware.
Swings, roundabouts, sixes and half dozens... hardware comparisons are hard.

I think you're extrapolating too much from this guys post. It could very easily have just been that it wasn't worth porting the game to the gamecube in the first place and it wasn't even considered.
