Diablo 2 in and of itself is essentially a very obtuse slot machine: I’d recommend PD2 or PoD over D2R. It’s only saving grace is the graphical overhaul. Otherwise it’s a strictly inferior way to experience Diablo 2 in 2025.

I also have the drop rates turned up by a factor of about 5 so my sharing characters can actually get all the items they want in the space of leveling them. I'm still going to play the RPG and the skinner box both for hundreds of hours. Deal with it.

I will say this, I wish diablo 2 had the same kind of loot thing that diablo 3 has to where items drop for your specific class rather then getting a fucking bow and you can't trade it cause well singleplayer.

Personally I have a second account on my PC with fast user switching enabled and I just leave a TC/IP game running all the time so I can join it and transfer stuff between characters. Keep in mind that it will refresh the world layout in your singleplayer game however (which can also be useful)

3. Install D2 on your new account
4. Start game, make a character, host a TC/IP server
5. Leave it running, minimize the game and switch accounts to your main account
6. You can now join that game with your real characters at any time

I love 1.06b but I still prefer 1.14d due to how frantic it is. I dislike runewords because they're so overpowered. It wasn't a bad idea introducing them while people were still figuring them out I guess. Synergies are the biggest gripe I have about expansion content.

Also the Assassin doesn't fit into the universe at all.

Anyone got any tips on Diablo 1 run? Is there a mandatory mod that does not change the gameplay too much or do you just go for vanilla + Hellfire?

No and it probably never will, it is essentially just a reskin of WC2, it was supposed to be a stop gap title with a 1 year dev time originally. The mockery it got in addition to how floored Blizzard was by Ion Storm's RTS Dominion Storm that was showcasing in the booth next to them at that E3 is what motivated them to make it a AAA from scratch title.

1. DevilutionX is worth using as you can enable "all-quests" and has multiplayer support. Hellfire is an optional toggle, but Hellfire's content is just so bad.

2. Belzebub if you want "chocolate" Diablo. All quests, plus restored quests so there's a lot more content for a single playthrough. Balancing is bad though and it is more like DIablo 2 loot treadmill.

3. The Hell. Mordor is some weird spergy slav. Really bizarre mod that I've never really liked.

PD2 is amazing, lots of QOL improvements and end game content (additional ubers, multiple tiers of maps, enhanced crafting and itemization with slamming that can add rare stats or brick the item)

Season 12 is gonna start soon, a good time to get into it, usually i get super addicted at the beginning of a season then taper off 3-4 weeks in, this is just the right amount of healthy addiction since it's only twice a year

DevilutionX is superb, it allows a number of optional features, such as widescreen, higher resolutions, doing your own binds, and as mentioned, singleplayer quests in multiplayer.
If you were one of those people who played Diablo on PSX back in the day, DevX allows you to play it with gamepad controls, even.

For Hellfire, it offers some added fun, but in my opinion that's mostly with the new items and classes, the new dungeons are kinda mediocre. Nonetheless, DevilutionX fixes Hellfire's problems and also allows playing it multiplayer.

It's Diablo 1, but multiplayer. Almost all quests were absent in the release version, so it's slightly dry on that point, but Diablo 1's quests aren't exactly all that complex either. You go deeper and deeper in the dungeon, you kill, you loot, you go back up to refresh, then go back down and go deeper.

It functioned, historically, but there were quite a few problems with potential desyncs due to a lot of things being handled client side, which absolutely fucking shouldn't (like blocking and hit stun). As player characters were also handled client side, this means that cheating was absolutely rampant pretty much from the beginning.
It also was all ran from a single desktop PC for the majority of its lifespan.
Mods and ports like The Hell, Belzebub and DevilutionX are not quite as cheatable in all ways (though certainly not impossible), but most of them fix the desync problems. Or, at least DevX does, I'm assuming Mordor would have fixed it in The Hell given how savvy he is about the original game and how long he's been making his mod series.

DevilutionX largely keeps things on the more vanilla side, and I greatly appreciate being able to have full quests in multiplayer, as well as Hellfire's new items, spells, and its Barbarian class (the latter which they actually allow even without the expansion, as he uses the Warrior as a base).

One of my big gripes with Hellfire is that since you can learn Apocalypse as a spell, they nerf it so that it no longer strikes enemies not in your line of sight (like behind walls).
They could have just done that for the spell version, because this really kills the utility of the staves and scrolls, and on Nightmare and Hell Difficulty, that kinda fucking hurts, especially with Hellfire rolling out the triple immune Arch Cunts in the Crypt. Yeah, you can still actually hit them with Apocalypse because it can't be resisted, but those cunts on Hell are sheer misery when THEY have a line of sight on YOU.

Corrupted zones now have a higher chance to drop tier 1 maps
Large charms can now roll faster cast rate and increased attack speed as a prefix
Arrows and Bolts now have normal, exceptional and elite bases similar to other items. Arrows bases are now called Crude Arrows, Sharp Arrows and Razor Arrows. Bolts are now called Light Bolts, Heavy Bolts and War Bolts.
Arrows have implicit +2/+10/+18 maximum damage (normal/exceptional/elite)
Bolts have implicit -2%/-4%/-6% to enemy physical resistance (normal/exceptional/elite)
Crossbows no longer have implicit -% to enemy physical resistance
Arrows and bolts can now have 1 socket on normal bases and up to 2 sockets on exceptional and elite bases
Bows and crossbows will no longer be able to roll the "visceral" affix
Magic and Rare arrows will now have their inventory sprite colored based on the affixes they rolled
Arrows/bolts will be getting crafted recipes (details to be revealed later)

I was watching some Grim Dawn gameplay and it's inundating the player with superfluous shit. Screenshot related. Endless tasks, collectibles, fetch quests that do nothing for the overall narrative. Compare that shit (which is just a small portion) to the wonderful simplicity of D2's acts:

- Clear Den of Evil
- Kill Blood Raven (optional)
- Get Horadric Malus (optional)
- Kill Countess (optional)
- Save Deckard Cain
- Kill Andariel

That's it. And they all wonderfully connect to the overall narrative. The UI does not look like WoW, it's simple and efficient. If Grim Dawn guys did D2, it would be something like

Clear Den of Evil
- kill Corpsefire
- collect 200 gold
- identify 5 items
- socket one weapon
- Fallen Shamans killed 7/12
- kill 30 Fallen (19/30)

You can actually turn the camera as well as zoom in, feels nice when playing it, but I still couldn't get into it. PoE's been the only other D1/D2 clone that I've put a substantial amount of time into. It's been the closest in matching what I've enjoyed out of the Diablo's in terms of style, tone, music, etc.

I like Titan Quest 1, but it doesn't feel nearly as good to play as D2. people always complain about things like FHR in D2, but other games feel so floaty without stuff like that to let you know you're getting fucked up. same reason why daze is important in wow. something about the sound in TQ is weird too because I seem to never hear incoming damage, which doesn't make sense because my skills are extremely audible.

so I think d2r classic uses all the same item generation formulas as d2r lod. I've had unique items I'm wearing drop, which I've read that's not how classic worked, but I'm not sure if those are superstitions or pre-lod mechanics, since I think all their uniques got level requirements after lod released? so they've probably been using the same drop mechanics since lod launched, even though some of the other gameplay is still classic such as whirlwind attack frames and block chance.
I found an old affix level formula that's something like:

Maxed out golem mastery and summon resistances. Spec into metal golem for increased golem defense to make your golems more tanky, which is is a golem's primary task, and then put some points in the others but mostly fire golem which is a good back up golem for when your metal one dies. If you have high magic find you can make metal golems with some pretty good special qualities.

I've been playing pd2 on the deck because it had built in controller support and was relatively easy to ger working since there was a step by step guide on the bullshit on getting the .net runtimes working on deck. The balance changes made are interesting. Still feels like D2, which median does not.

ok so how do i make my game launch on my 2nd monitor, the CRT? Do I need to make the CRT my main display?

btw for anyone who gets a CRT to play CBG games, if you get a CRT that hasn't been powered on in a long time it takes a few hours for it to stop being blurry and be crips, yesterday i was trying to figure out what the issue was and all of a sudden the issue just fixed itself after using it for multiple hours. Very strange and never knew that that was a problem with CRTs til yesterday.

I have no idea of the exp penalties in those old patches, but you might be too low of a level. If you are like 8 levels under the monster, your exp gets trashed.

At that level you'd probably be getting better exp in normal chaos sanctuary or act1 nm.

Doom knights are like level 59 on nm, so you'd only be getting 5% exp from them.

Corruption wasn't a thing in D2. Most D2 mods after poe came out added in a type of vaal orb where you can risk essentially deleting the item for a chance at a new affix or sockets.
I think it's a great mechanic and I like the addition.
