I am trying to build a scriptorium in one of my colonies, but it doesn't let me too and says "There is no need to build a scriptorium when we can build a printer shop", yet I don't have printer shop researched. I am assuming the colony does, so if the building is ultimately theirs why can't I build it?

As a mexican you have to rush the iron/tin in north mexico as an absolute first priority
You aren't supposed to be able to mine it without the tech but you get a free RGO level for free because the game is coded by monkeys
Even if they patch it, the two iron RGOs are right next to the only tin RGO on the north continent.
If you do that early, it completely solves your tool/weapon shortages in all mexican markets

At the end of the day the game currently exists as it is. Even if they fuck it up somehow, modders can save it. That's basically impossible for EU IV because of the core game systems. I liked MEIOU more than base EUIV but it felt fucked up to play and was obviously grafted onto a game that wasn't designed for any depth.

Depends, if you don't have any regulars you'll want the noble levies to win battles since that's all your heavy cavalry.
If you have decent regulars then noble levies become worthless, they're too small and odd in number to compete with professionals.
Peasant levies are basically fodder to fill gaps in the line or do suicide assaults on forts. They're 100% critical early in the game, but once you have a professional army of like 60 regiments, you'll probably only need levies in big deathwars. So you can reduce those too later
But overall peasant levies are better because there's a FUCKLOAD of peasants. "+10% Noble Levies" might be like 200 guys while "+10% Peasant Levies" is 20,000 men, that's a whole extra army stack.

Yes, and that's modeled in game by a metalworking tech gated behind feudalism IIRC which stops you from mining iron and lead but not copper, tin, silver and gold.
It functions correctly for the north american natives where some start without metalworking and using colonial frontiers they start at level 0 iron RGOs as they should. Cahokia for example has good access to copper but is completely fucked with 0 access to tin, so basically has to rely on pueblo/the aztecs to fix their market for them AND start trading critical bottleneck resources north (lol

copper, silver, and gold are found in "native" form meaning it's pretty much just a hunk of nearly-pure metal in the ground
you can work this with a hammer and a fire, i don't think you even need the fire to be especially hot

There's little difference in research between countries within western european markets, because institutions spread quickly through trade. So even if institutions spawn in Italy or Germany you just trade with that market and get them in your own market ez.
The real way to speed up research is massively spamming literacy/clergy buildings, which means spamming books which means spamming paper which means spamming lumber, and all that costs money. So tldr rich country = better research.

I noticed the Ottomans still hadn't finished eating the beyliks in like 1500, I tagged over and noticed the button in the situation that gives them claims would cost them 3,000 ducats to use. So of course they never use it, because the AI doesn't float that much money (which is a good thing but cucks the situation)
It should just be fucking free, or maybe have it cause antagonism or cause an trust hit idk.
Same for Italian Wars, as France I had to pay 3k to use the CB button. Instead I just didn't use it. No CB was cheaper. Hell even trucebreaking would've been cheaper if I was low on time. I'd rather build 27 printing presses with that money instead of burning it, thanks.
They need to eradicate this scaling cost shit from the game ASAP, it was shit in EU4 but in this game it's straight up broken. Because not all costs scale now.
Like for example I got a "nobles demand pensions" event asking for 3100 ducats. My bank was 1,200 ducats. My loan size (scaling) is over 1000 ducats, but the money the estates have available to lend (not scaling) is only 800 ducats. So I can't even take a single loan.
In other words, the nobles demanded I go bankrupt instantly.
So of course I clicked the other button.

Does anybody know what the fuck "from events" means in pop satisfaction window and why isn't it ticking the fuck down? I have multiple provinces with the same -70 to MINUS HUNDRED satisfaction which doesn't go away.
How many cities do you guys found?
Do you do it by province (1 or 2 per province) or based on RGOs? Or is there some other strategy?

The only problem with trade is micromanaging it. Its just tedious. You can absolutely game it to decrease prices on relevant goods but its a complete time sink otherwise.
The best goods to micromanage are the goods used for buildings because it gives you building cost reduction in the market youre building in.
If you are microing your trade strictly for profit you will be bored and nothing will make sense because microing trade is not about profit its about getting the materials you want for the stuff that requires it.

It's usually best to build from the province with highest control to adjacent province with highest control, that way their control spreads further. Then repeat until you can't spread proximity any more, at which point you build bailiffs.
I think the button at the top of the road building screen automatically does this.
The exception is when proximity is already spreading better by sea and building the road wouldn't do anything to help proximity.
So yeah rule of thumb would be draw a line from your capital through your high control provinces. Usually that's downstream on a river. Like if your capital is Torino you build to the southeast first, if your capital is Paris you go southwest first.

They hold food.
I think the supply units are very niche. The way you're supposed to use them is create a whole unit of supply regiments, then use them to build a food depot, and cart food from a province with food access and deposit it into the depot. If you attach supply units to an actual fighting army instead 1. it takes up frontage uselessly and 2. it barely holds any food compared to how much the army eats.
But most of the time you'll have food access anyway. so I don't see how it's useful. Maybe you need it more for very distant wars. Or weird strats in MP where you invade from an undefended angle, or have to support 999999 troops on one province to hold a line but can't let them starve.

I haven't found them useful but I've only done wars on the continent. In age 3 I usually have 11 frontage so 33 regiments in each stack. I think each fighting regiment carries like 10% as much food as a supply cart? if you're adding one supply cart in that's not even one extra tick worth of food consumption.
If I needed a food supply badly I'd make a unit that's all supply carts and set objective to "perform army logistics". But I haven't needed to do that since I figured out food access.

There was no need for it in China. They had a robust literary culture going back over 1000 years before the start date. Not just literature but also the equivalent of pamphlets and essays. If you wanted the whole world to read something, you memorialized it to the court, and they had an entire department specifically designed to disseminate whatever you wrote. And these things could even be inflammatory and controversial. (though tyrannical ministers would sometimes crack down on this, and the Qing later made the whole thing a joke and totally censored)
What the "printing press" institution in Europe actually represents is the start of casual literacy. In China the literati were a special privileged class that wrote only for each other, as part of an ancient political process which depended almost entirely on themselves. In Europe, the lower classes were becoming more literate, more wealthy, and more politically important all at the same time, so it mattered a great deal and changed society.
Meanwhile in Ming China, they might put more letters to print than the rest of the world combined, but it'd all be copies of the Five Books, commentaries on the Five Books, and excoriating essays about how my rival Wang Dong is ignorant of the Five Books.

Different provinces are given a proximity score between each other, and that score affects various mechanics like control and market distance.
Proximity cost reductions reduce the proximity, and therefore increase control. It's not likely to be 1:1, and if your country is big enough it might not do anything in the extremes because control from proximity to your capital will already be 0

This is the smallest resolution that the game gives you access to (locations)
For the UK they're smaller than counties, but usually represent more than one city.

here's one (1) colonised location (the smallest territorial unit) in Taiwan, complete with a bunch of Japanese minors owning random disjointed locations
it's not the Med but it's the first thing I have available and it's a pretty similar level of granularity as far as I can tell

I think you'd need someone besides the Hongwu emperor to unite China. He was an autistic fanatic for peasants so he set up the country in such a way there could never be a centralized state, and the merchant class was badly persecuted. Even with god tier rulers and ministers later on, and some truly awful ones, none of them could meaningfully change the system, for better or worse.
You'd need the equivalent guy but for merchants. Some sort of giga-capitalist warlord who monetizes the whole economy and forces peasants to grow cash crops (except it actually works this time)
>>2218996

And here's italy/greece
>How much do you interact with each and every one of them, or are they just empty spaces?
Each is given their own individual RGO, which can be expanded independently. For market bottlenecks you either have to interact with them individually or automate it. Your units also exist at the location level
For wars, if you capture the province capital (one level of territory up) then it automatically captures the entire province. I don't know if that's still the case for cities though
If you're playing as china, you basically just have to automate everything.

Nah that's actually how he was. It's not a positive thing, he made retarded decisions that doomed the dynasty from the start and never got fixed. Like later on the state had a gazillion people and a massive GDP, but couldn't raise a proper army because there was no centralized production for firearms, and every podunk village would contribute one misshapen gun each and they'd all explode. They couldn't even control floods because the responsibility was devolved to locals who stole the money.
They collected taxes the same way people did 5000 years ago, grain on river barges, because their shitty peasant economy couldn't handle money, even though they tried to monetize it. And the tax rate was so crazy low the state had no revenue. But because revenue was so low, whenever officials passed through a territory, the locals were responsible for paying their costs. Which could be obscenely high. This became a form of corruption.
speaking of corruption, he also set officials' salaries to starvation wages as a way of encouraging humble peasant-like living, but in practice this meant they all lived off corruption and got obscenely wealthy anyway.

At the moment running a ton of small vassals is the meta for conversion/integration because every fief gets 2 additional cabinet slots and basically 100% control
Eventually you hit your diplomatic capacity but it scales down based on relative income between you and each subject rather than a single number per vassal and the scaling isn't punishing enough for having a higher number of relations to discourage it
Eventually you do want provinces under your own control though, particularly as you get better proximity bonuses through land/sea over time

>and I can do whatever there like it’s my own country
You can't.
You don't control their armies so they're useless in wars
You don't command their manpower or income, only a fraction of money gets paid to you
You don't control their spending so you can't stop them from wasting the money they do keep
You can build stuff inside them, but you don't reap the profits yourself
You can't reform their government or manipulate their estates, so you can't help the crown keep more of those profits
You can't accept cultures they have, or convert or assimilate their pops
And if you have too many and all of them combined get stronger than you, they'll get uppity and rebel.
It's still preferable to holding low control locations, but not as OP as some make it sound. You want to eventually eat the fiefdoms and integrate the land. Or at least consolidate it into a bigger subject you farm for vassal fees.

Why do roads have to be so insanely complicated? Can't it just be a road that you build in the province that connects to other province's roads rather than this tangled mess of having to build them from every population center?

It's not complicated, they just never explain that roads exist between locations, not inside locations.
in other words, if a location has four neighboring locations that's four potential road connections to build.
Why do they do this? Because proximity and armies moving into the mountains shouldn't get a bonus because there's a road leading away to the valley.
If you want proximity to move better between two provinces you build roads between those provinces. The auto build button at the top of the road builder does that pretty much optimally. You only need to build roads manually if you're building for something other than proximity. Like wanting a special road for your army.

Does anyone know what's actually required for the Lion of the North achievement?
I'm playing Sweden for my first ironman run, and it's going really well. I just hit the late 1500s and the Wars of Religion situation just popped, and I realized I have a problem. Apparently, you HAVE to be in the HRE to join either side of the League? And unfortunately, I flipped to Lutheran nearly a century ago, so I'm ineligible to join.
Am I just locked out of the achievement now? Are you expected to join the HRE as Sweden?? That wouldn't make any sense.

1. Yes.
2. The game has a number of pre-existing rulers already defined so that your regnal numbers will add on to them.
3. Different forms of the same name count as the same name. See Henri I and Henry II in pic related (why the fuck did they do the names like that?) Also if you have another Stephen he will be Stephen II after Etienne I.
4. Different dynasties don't count towards the regnal number. Here, Edward the Confessor is Edward I, but Edward I, II, and III are still listed as their actual numbers. This means there's two Edward I's in the English title history.

you need to play as the smallest nation to get it and manually set up deals
price depends on the volume of the item, and pops regularly get new demands
i dont think ai is able to satisfy them automatically
you need to set up a chain of for example salt trades across multiple markets in order to deliver it to your capital. One market mines it, then you set up export to another where its getting stored, then export from there to your destination.
If you are making something in to something else the lower the price of the initial item the more profitable the production.

is it possible to play as a French vassal and get independence or am I just getting fucked every game
Has anyone else noticed that ruling dynasties tend to go extinct a lot, including your own? Each ruler typically has three kids, and your brothers don't seem to marry on their own so no kids from them. So if you have three daughters you're fucked. I just had this happened and when I opened up the dynasty tree I noticed that all the previous uncles and cousins didn't have kids if they weren't rulers. RIP House of Welf. Guess I have a reason to actually find marriages for useless people in the court now.

Yeah you have to arrange marriages manually. But if you do it's really strong, by having a big dynasty you eventually get a bunch of competent people belonging to the crown estate, and you can fill all cabinet seats, generalships, and admiralties with them. It's like a 75% crown power boost if you do all that.

As maya I had food in one market go up to 0.2 ducats/food which was completely bankrupting me until I destroyed the market centre where the prices were that high.

Characters don't matter beyond their trait and stats. Their estate loyalty only serve to give power to their estate. Religions and culture don't matter beyond triggering random events. I feel in the future there will be a character focused dlc. It wont be ck2-tier but might be a tone-down imperator rome system where you are a nation but need the people in it to be loyal. I had the clergy go to a civil war and nothing happened to the clergy working in my cabinet, no disloyalties or me punishing their estates after I won.
It's shit that it's almost impossible to exile people or invite people but I understand it shouldn't become the main focus. I had my son somehow be a courtier in the papal state and I couldn't get his ass to come back. The pope turned him into a priest(he was married and still fucked as he kept making kids) but because he's clergy and not noble/crown, he wouldn't inherit. So basically I lost a genius heir and got stuck with a retard. Cool immersive storytelling game Johan-sama.

>put men-at-arms/halberdiers in the center
>put crossbow men and cavalry in the flanks so they initiative crush the flank and then activate their flank bonus on the center
>add in artillery wherever
is this basically how you build armies?
I made keybinds for EU4 oldfags like me who don't want to use new army keybinds and can't stand clicking map modes every 5 seconds with the shitty laggy UI.
>Go to Documents\Paradox Interactive\Europa Universalis V\user_bindings\
>Make new file named "new.bindings" and put the pastebin in there
>in game, go to Settings -> Input Bindings
>type "new.bindings" and click Load Profile
>-=|CAUTION|=-
Unfortunately, PDX got rid of mapmode folders from EU4 so we have to do
>CTRL+[key]
and
>SHIFT+[key]
to emulate what we had. This is inferior in pretty much every way to multiple mapmodes on a single key but it's what we were given.
There is also one issue with the Embark bind which is - there isn't a Disembark button for seemingly no reason.
I got the idea to do this because Generalist had tried to do this but his config was DOGSHIT. I took his and fixed it so the army keys take priority and the best mapmodes only take up the left side of the keyboard.
Change it how you like but this is probably the best it gets for a preset.
That is extremely upsetting. If you PU the emperor he just leaves the union after death anyway. I brought him up to union laws through the parliament but the game says no. You'd think the electors would just vote for someone else. I paid 300 antagonism for this. The whole europe hates me and my only ally broke the alliance. For nothing.

That's mostly what you should be doing but also sort by demand sometimes and build up the industries where you can. Also look at what you're importing, if you can build up that industry then you can save money on not having to import stuff. It doesn't factor in things like that, just raw profit value.

That's correct. You as a player only ever interact with markets by either performing arbitrage between markets or by buying goods at market prices to pay for construction/production.
The one thing I don't know is if surplus goods literally just get discarded or if they're treated as just being sold at the market price.
I'm guessing it's the latter, since each market also has a stockpile of goods which can become full, so I think you get penalized twice for overproduction both by only selling a fraction of that good and also by lowering the price

1. The goods are produced in the market, and then sold to the market at the market price
2. Countries then move goods between markets using their trade capacity
3. Consumers (pops, buildings, countries) then buy goods from the market at the market price
I don't think the system is fully closed, in the sense that no money is created or destroyed.

From here on out it'll just be stacking modifiers from overpowered DLC locked techs and needing to watch 10 hours of content creator slop before each game to find out the meta (that is changed one week after they upload their "guide")

yeah it's shit. I think they will change it eventually.
Biggest problem is that most of the army buttons do not have binds.
>Drilling
>Upgrade
>Select Objective (this one exists but doesnt work)
>Disembark (Embark should also do Disembark)
>Attach to Unit
>Allow Friendlies Attach to Unit
>Force March
>March to the Sound of Guns
>Refill Garisson
All of these have no keybinds.
I remember watching dev streams where people were asking for WASD movement in EU4 and the devs responded "Just use the mouse" in a deadpan way.
This game, there is WASD movement by default and none of the army keys make sense. H to split by default? You can't use the same key for two different binds without it fucking up.
The keybinds are a mess. It's like they only want you to use the mouse.
So fucking frustrating.

Just won my first war as Naples against Sicily and their allies: Aragon and the Papal States. About 2 hours irl and a year and a half game time. Very very fun!
FirstI sent my armies north and took the lands around Rome but couldn’t take the city itself before Sicilian troops crossed into Calabria.
I sent half my forces south the beat them back when Aragon landed 12,000 soldies in Rome.
My King was able to win a decisive victory and I moved my fleet to blockade the Italian coast.
The southern army was able to beat thr Sicilians and occupy most of the island of Sicily and the papal states agreed to a seperate peace deal after Milan joined on my side. I didnt get the city of Rome itself but i did get the rich lands surrounding it, the castle at Assisi and vassalized the republic of Ancona.
In the peace deal with Sicily I took most of the island and forced them to join my anti-papal Ghibellines faction.
Seriously one of the best wars i’ve ever fought in a paradox game super great. I totally ignored everything else except the war so i probably kinda fucked my economy. The deficit is from buying food during a bad food shortage im assuming is / was caused by my armies. I think i can sort it out.
Next steps are to establish control over my new lands, get my economy rolling again, and prepare for either another war where I take the entire island of Sicily, or try to grow internally via buildings.
Seriously so much fun I love this game

thats where you are wrong boyo, look at CK3, a technically amazing game with pretty gud UI but lack of polish and content. after that, A team went to develop EU5 (which, again, turned out fine), and B team consisting of troon discord mods, ex content creators and other retards started to shit out ass DLCs without listening to community. im 99% certain none of CK3 major DLCs are anything above mixed in reviews, but i cant be bothered to check, that game is a complete disappointment. im afraid the same will happen to EU5 but hoping for the best

Historically accurate, colonial border wars were rather common.
>Cresap's War (also known as the Conojocular War, from the Conejohela Valley where it was mainly located along the south bank) was a border conflict between Pennsylvania and Maryland fought in the 1730s. Hostilities erupted in 1730 with a series of violent incidents prompted by disputes over property rights and law enforcement. The conflict escalated through the first half of the decade, culminating in the deployment of military forces by Maryland in 1736 and by Pennsylvania in 1737. The armed phase of the conflict ended in May 1738 with the intervention of King George II, who compelled the negotiation of a ceasefire. A final settlement was not achieved until 1767 when the Mason–Dixon line was recognized as the permanent boundary between the two colonies.

hot take: the games mechanics are fun but the AI is dogshit and after you play 1-2 games, and realize that the exact same (stupid, ahistorical) outcomes happen in every single game, it stops becoming fun.
worse:
>Fixing the AI's choices is one of the easiest things they could have done while developing, but they didnt.
>EU4 also suffers from chronically bad AI even after 10 years
>It's never going to get fixed
>We'll drop this game after 6 months tops once they start shitting out DLC's

Its scotland and france first which is kind of meh.
Honestly I just want to see more unlanded countries like Population Based Countries, Navy Based Countries, Mercenary Based Countries.
Imagine playing Gypsies in Romania but you arent actually playing Romania you are playing the ethnic group stealing shit from everyone else.
Imagine playing the Merc Companies. You could play them and turn them into Army Based Countries through landing them like adventurers in CK3.
Pirate and Colonial flavor needs priority. Its a massive segment of the game and stuff like Admiralty needs to allow you to reform into a Naval Based Country depending on your government rank.

Organizationalist seems crazy strong to me. +0.1% flat global development is really good, and they're pagan.
And pagans are also extremely good. You get all of your god bonuses for free AND you get to stack an aspect on top of that for even more bonuses.
Basically any pagan with a fertility god (all of them?) can be sat at +0.08% pop growth from the start of the game as a permanent buff. For cahokia, that could be a 20% army movement speed buff instead - or +0.4% monthly investment (not that you'd ever need more than +0.2% global you get for free), or -20% stability investment cost.
It's insanely good.

Depeasanting is always good. Peasants are the only pops that grow naturally so you will always have more peasants, you'll never run out.
This is why fort assaults are good btw. Raise levies, throw bodies at assaulting, then raise more levies if you run out. The peasants don't matter.
You will never run out of food either, it's insanely abundant so it doesn't matter how many farmers die. There's always more. The excess food is just thrown away so you might as well spend your farmers on something good.
The huge amount of peasants in your country are actually unspent resources sitting there, and if you're not spending them it's inefficient. You shouldn't be floating peasants, always spend them. As long as your peasants are being born about as fast as they're promoting, you're good until the end of time.

Is assaulting forts literally ever viable? Even outnumbering the enemy 200:1 with a Reformation-era army, with cannons and the max artillery bonus, against a level 1 Mesoamerican fort I only have a "chance" to succeed? I know taking forts should be difficult but this is absurd.

The tooltip lies, you can easily win assaults with peasant levy human waves in 1337. It'll just kill a lot of them.
It's just spending manpower to take the fort faster.
imo assaults are overpowered, at the end of the day spending 10,000 medieval NEETs to take a fortress is much cheaper than buying/maintaining 10 cannons and sitting there for months.

it actually exists. the Victual brothers pop up and take Gotland through an event. Störtebeker is their leader. As Sweden (or province owner?) you get some option to deal with them, I one was to actually play as them. I chose war outright and managed to land an army on the island to siege it down. But they had like 15 galleys and I only had 3, so they cut off my food access, which lead to attrition but I managed to siege the fort and retake the island. It spawned with some harbour tavern building which only pirates can build which gives +1 soldier and +1 sailor per month. It's still there but idk if it functions.

yes.
you basically always want to depeasant a province
peasant pops are basically useless bodies. labourers working in even the shittiest of RGOs will at least net you a marginal tax and make your other buildings more profitable or give you goods you can trade
in the early game you just build RGOs every where that has unemployed peasants so every place in your country is constantly depeasanting
you then just create jobs so you can suck off pops from your neighbouring markets

Wow thanks Johan for your simulation experience! Very unblobby! It should not take 100 years of back to back death wars for the ottomans to conquer the mamluks.
Honestly you should just get an event to vassalise the whole thing like irl. Right now player Ottomans gets super strong but it doesn't peak until too late into the game because you to slowly chip away at the mamluks and wait for the european hugboxes to break up before you can snowball. Late game is much closer to the EU4 gigablobbing map painter experience.

Works on my machine, not even one implosion happened there. Remember that creating custom vassal out of the province will make it have primary culture of that province. If you create subject in Normandy (as an example) and feed it french territories, no wonder revolts will happen
So does Meritocracy actually spread to Europe eventually? Do you get a research bonus for previous age techs?

unironically play as some shithole for a while until you run out of things to do that will teach you where the buttons are without you fucking anything up
once you feel like you know where to go to press things start a new game as, yeah Bohemia is really strong, Netherlands is popular as well. I picked Naples, I think Castille or Portugal would be a good start. Ottomans if you just wanna blob. France and England feel like 3rd or 5th playthrough area. They're a bit more complicated I think due to the 100 years war and England is definitely more difficult there as well.
When you start your second game (the first real game) automate trade but leave everything else up to you. Basically just build up your economy, use spies or parliament to get CB and then go from there. You'll fuck stuff up (I still don't know what im doing) but it's enough for you to get started with.

No CB is good if you're a big country like France or Blobhemia. Coalitions are a meme because they won't attack unless their total power is greater than yours. Which is usually is if you're a hegemon tier country.
And you can disband the coalition by beating the leader. Even if it's not a coalition war. e.g. coalition leader is poland, set poland as rival, if Poland declares on Lithuania you intervene and 2v1 them, coalition disbanded. Then it re-forms with fewer members and thus weaker.
