Tolkien was not an author, not really. What he was, rather, can be more accurately described as a Linguist. In fact, he was So preeminent in his field that Oxford, the university at which he was a fellowe, allowed him exclusive access to antediluvian manuscripts they held in their secret archives, which he then simply Translated and assembled into a coherent narrative.
This is why the books all had a map in the front, this is literally a pre-flood map of Europe. The shire is Ireland, Mordor is turkey/romania, you can fill in the rest.
