Imagine that you came across 1,500 shrimp about to be painfully killed. Fortunately, there’s a machine that will stun every shrimp, so that they’ll be unconscious during their deaths, rather than in extreme agony. But the machine is broken. To fix it, you’d have to spend a dollar. Should you do so? We can even sweeten the deal and imagine that the machine won’t just be used this year—it will be used year after year, saving 1,500 shrimp per year.

It seems obvious that you should spend the dollar. Extreme agony is bad. If you can prevent literally thousands of animals from being in extreme agony for the cost of a dollar—for around a fourth of the cost of a cup of coffee—of course you should do so! It’s common sense. In fact, this would be the best dollar you spent all year—every penny would save 16 shrimp from an agonizing death per year!

He's got up off the floor again. It took a while for him to get up this time. Could be he's gotten back up after they removed the cell security. Who is this man? Why do they need to bleed him through the bars? So that he animates and shows life despite his situation? He could have had a life. How many times I found him bled unconscious or savagely beaten. How many times I returned to find him sitting there against the bars in various conditions. Obviously bleeding, cradling broken bones, puke everywhere, shaking violently. I don't understand. My superiors still scoff and deny my claims. They keep to blurry images and the files, only listening to their people. Thats not just a man anymore. Expression never changing. Hollow, emotionless. The left eye it lost, back somehow. Anomalous brain wave patterning shifting by the week. Broken bones roughly set back into place without aid. Bruised gray patches that show, somehow move around the body, and then fade. Fatal wounds slowly scarring over. The organs shouldn't function anymore. It moves slowly. Shakes on the floor for hours at a time. One day I came in to find regular ridges across a section of the skull like a washboard. They were gone the following day. A month ago one of the bars had to be replaced. The guards found an imprint of the subject's hand embedded into it as if someone took a cylinder of clay and squeezed it. The video archives don't show enough resolution to make out the detail of the hand shaped dent, but there should have been easily enough to show the subject at least moving to the bar. It's been laying there with the occasional tremor for last nine months. On rare occasions the body has jumped as if savagely electrocuted, cell sensors registering burned flesh in the air. God help us all.
