Dunno if it is the same concept, but I remember doing this thing as a kid, in which I would stare at a mirror alone, and began asking myself a lot of questions, like "Why is this my face? Why is my face different in my mind? Who is even the one talking right now, if my mouth is shut?" and be able to do this for periods of up to an hour, I did that less and less as I grew up. Point being, I think many people have never done such an exercise because they were bombarded with television and entertainment since birth, I grew up in a semi-rural area where we had only two TVs in the house, and only one picked cable. Maybe the NPC syndrome is based on that, urbanized people growing up were never faced with existentialism, just worried about their next dopamine fix in the form of a paycheck or objects.
