How come it wasn't aimed at girls in Japan, but rather adult men? Isn't it about girls being cutesy and doing stuff associated with girls?

The anime was somewhat toned down compared to the manga and apparently aired on the Disney Channel in Japan at one point so it's not like it completely avoided the young girl demographic. Anime adaptations of manga in general tend to try and widen the target demographic compared to manga.

That's a change in tone from the anime version, Kyoto animation is one of the anime studios with the most female staff, the anime has a lot of original content so I guess the change was quite natural.
The manga is more racy, uninspired, tries harder to be ecchi and it’s more basic in characterization in comparison.

I read the manga and you guys are seriously exaggerating. Mugi was originally portrayed as someone wanting to lewd her friends, but only ever as a joke, and it was phased out of her character as the series went on. The anime did this too, with some sexual Mugi jokes in S1. You make it seem like there were sexy poses and panty shots galore that got stripped out.

I still think that’s a stretch. The word had always been perpetuated that the manga was bad and anime made it something to care about, but I found the manga is a perfectly serviceable 4koma comedy series. A lot of the show adds anime original stuff, but in terms of adapting, nearly every panel makes its way into an episode. The manga’s beach episode is only 8 pages, and the swimsuits look exactly the same. The girls aren’t particularly voluptuous in the manga.

Yuribaiting Mugi is the biggest difference, but it’s just dialogue, and a lot of it makes it into the anime. There’s nothing egregiously lewd. The show gave her added depth as a character. Ironically Yui isn’t as airheaded as she is in the anime (unrelated, but wanted to bring up).

Assuming you've seen slice of life stuff before, and are asking why this should be considered differently, KyoAni budget for one thing, and I think the dramatic moments are handled significantly better than other series. There are occasional melancholic moments, especially in the next season, that resonate strongly. The girls famously don't play their instruments as much as Azusa would like them to, but when they do go into "band mode" it's very exciting. The performance scenes are so much fun.

You've already gotten past the beachhouse episode where the other members realize how passionate Yui has become as a guitarist, so if scenes like that or the atmospheric ambience of the school setting hasn't hooked you, it probably won't suddenly click later.

This fascinates me because I found the movie to be far and away the worst part precisely because it was so little about camping, but also had very little material about the girls or their relationships. Yuru Camp tended to treat the Japanese countryside and its various attractions as a character moreso than any of the people, but once I understood that's what it was going for I found it pleasant enough even though the first season was probably the best one.

That's a shame to some degree, but it's not necessarily unpleasant. My mindset was more "why this one" other than KyoAni polish, but a basic thing done well is certainly something to be celebrated. Hadn't heard of that one, my consumption has been pretty eclectic and it's only this past year I've gotten more disciplined about watching things solo. I'll add it to the list.

I get what you mean about the real life shops, travel, and tedium being fairly dry, but as someone who spent a large chunk of their childhood camping multiple times a year that's part of what made it nostalgic for me. Little things like figuring out how to stake a tent in shitty ground or killing time in the middle of nowhere are just as much a part of camping as the fun bits, but I definitely agree with you that verisimilitude isn't exactly the goal; it's not like any of these shows go deep into the schoolwork. Also I wish they didn't go to an onsen damn near every episode, shit was egregious.

I found my first one to be kind of a slog and had to be dragged to the end by the social pressure of watching with someone else, but after a while you get a sense for the staple characters and basic ebb-and-flow and it becomes a comfort thing. Haruhi is a different situation because the release order is intended to be not chronological and the chronological order is definitely the lesser way to watch the show, and it doesn't have ovas, which often times are injected into the chronology between episodes. With keion, it's my opinion that it's better to do that with them. But release order is fine. Nothing breaks, obviously. And in my defense, watching the end of the movie at the end is because most of the movie happens significantly before the final several episodes, which are all about graduation and the cool-down phase of their time at school, except for the last part, which just shows from their perspective how they wrote the song for Azunyan. I like finishing with the movie, but I don't like how it would flash back several episodes if I had just watched the movie completely at the end. There is a perfect place to consider the england movie over and the final part of it as an sort of sideways epilogue, which is when theyre sitting silently at their desks just after the classroom concert. Watching it this way suits me better. But I do agree, it is quite retarded.

It may not have been aimed at girls but ended up being really popular with Japanese high school girls at that time, probably because the main cast have really good (and realistic) chemistry among them. And it was one of the first anime that was focused on a girl band, paving the way for other similar anime like Bang Dream and Bocchi the Rock. A lot of girls picked up guitar and especially bass because of the K-On girls. Many voice actresses also got into the industry after being influenced by K-On when they were in middle/high school.

They're making Yuru Camp sound like Texhnolyze. It's cute girls doing cute things while going camping with all the wilderness vistas that implies, but they spend a lot of time driving around, going to tourist attractions on the road, or shopping for camping gear. I'll see if I can find it.
But some idol stuff has a fair amount of female fans depending on what type it is.

I finished S2E10 last night. Been keeping up a steady clip the last few days. It can't be overstated the degree to which the show comes into its own with the introduction of Azunyan and S2 is doing a good job of paying off the character work already done in the first season. It's odd to me how few of the shows that were clearly inspired heavily by K-On don't leverage the passage of time in the same way, when this show will have months go by offhandedly. I think the pacing is a little off
The first season is only 12 episodes and burns through the entire first 2 years, while the second is twice as long and only covers the third year (azunyan's second)
I would have liked to see more of years 1 and 2, but it makes sense that most of the show takes place in their busiest school year, as well as when their freindship has grown to be the deepest. It would have been weird seeing an entire 24 episodes without azunyan, but perhaps 12 would have been a solid pace. One cour for each of the first two years, then two for the third i guess

One thing I will say about the manga vs. the anime is I read the manga and by itself, it never felt like the extreme moe thing that the anime apparently was. It felt like a chill, funny 4koma with the kind of jokes you'd expect. I watched the anime and everything was so slow so you could tell it was all about staring at cute girls.

I'm very glad I stuck with it. The first few episodes of S1 were a slow starter but I'm shocked that K-On is exactly as good as everyone says it is, and I imagine that only improves on a rewatch. I'm also glad I went with release order because if I had to end on 24 I'd be gutted.

I've rewatched K-On a few times, and it actually does get better. You care more about the characters and you can see all the little things that are built up. There's the symbolism of the turtle and hare. There's the bags on the bench in the club room. There's the stuff with Yui not knowing what she wants to do with her life, as a constant theme. There's the stuff with Yui following in Sawako's footsteps in a lot of key ways. There's Mugi's whole personal arc of finally having genuine friends for the first time, and why she joined the club to begin with after seeing Ritsu and Mio's friendship. Speaking of, there's Ritsu and Mio's whole relationship. There's Azusa's arc as she grows as a person and a band member. There's tons of stuff, told in a lot of subtle details that come back again and again once you know to look for them.

Thanks! I knew at least one person was helping me keep the thread nudged and I did push myself to finish quickly because we were nearing bump limit, though I likely would've rushed through S2 anyways because it's such a breezy watch.

The bags I had clued in on as a metaphor and if nothing else a visual signifier of their history with the keychains and such, but the scene that really stood out to me was in one of the last episodes as Azunyan was going to put her bag down next to everyone else's but all the diplomas were in the way. Obviously that's a little heavy-handed on the visual metaphor but it was still extremely well-executed. I think one of the things I'm going to be looking out for the most next time is the bits of continuity you mentioned and also the signs of them growing over the three years. There's a lot to look forward to.

Yui truly becomes the leader of the band on that first summer training camp. Ritsu is the one who makes things happen when they need to, through very practical thinking (or blackmail). Mugi is the facilitator, the support class, the girl that says "yes, and" to every Yui improvisation or Ritsu machination. But Yui is the leader because she rallies them all emotionally when they need it. She's got the big, crazy optimism. She's the emcee hyping up the band, on and off the stage. All the others fall under her spell, her reality distortion field. She made Mio think they'd go to Budokan. She made even Azusa think they're a better band than every professional band at the summer festival. Yui gets a lot of help, from everybody, but she's takes all that energy invested in her and pushes them forward each time to reach their potential. Mio can't help but recognize that. Even Azusa figures that out eventually.

Are we the same person? I watched Girls und Panzer before K-On, but only watched K-On in the last year or so, and since then I have watched Yuru Camp and been watching Non Non Biyori for the first time as of the last couple weeks.

I loved it at the time but looking back I'm fearful of the pacing lurch in the back half of the season, to say nothing of the entire episode spent on omorashi...

Yes, Yui is everyone's BFF instantly. Human, or animal, or Azunyan, does not matter. She's the one who instantly calls everyone -chan as soon as she joins the club and tells them all to call her Yui. She breaks the formality of Japan down instantly within the club and they can't help but be friends after that. And she's the one who seems to cause Mugi to bring in all those cakes and tea, anyway, because of her enthusiasm for it. But she's also not wanting to take advantage. She's the one who asks Mugi if it's really okay that she's always bringing them food. Mugi can feel comfortable as a rich girl knowing that Yui and the others aren't just abusing her wealth and using her. Yui doesn't accept their part time job money to buy her guitar, which causes Mugi to ultimately "bargain" on her behalf. Yui is too pure to exploit anyone like that.
The rain episode is outstanding, and it's notable in how much the other seniors in Sawako's homeroom sort of become real characters in that one. That gets added to with the Ro-Mio and Juliet story obviously, but in the rain episode they're also being drawn into Yui's shenanigans, talking about how much Yui is in love with her boyfriend Giita, etc. They know the Light Music Club is ridiculous and weird, but they all seem to love them and it's not just the great concerts but the warmth of Yui.

NTA but Girls und Panzer is honestly one of my favorite anime of all time. It has no business being as good as it is, the concept is absurd, but it is clearly a passion project for the studio and they give it their all. I am obsessed with it. Only anime I've ever bought merch for, not just physical media. The series is quite good, the movie is excellent. They're still releasing more stuff with the "das Finale" story arc over six more lengthy OVAs (kind of a second season).

It helps if you are familiar with WW2 history, but it's not necessary. You'll just get a ton more out of it as it's filled to the brim with references, parody, and random historical artifacts which may or may not be obvious. But it's all done with such sincerity and love. They embrace only positive stereotypes of other countries. The characters are a lot of fun, regardless of your historical knowledge, and it's a compelling enough story on its own.

Very cute girls, power of friendship, but also not afraid to deal with some more serious stuff from time to time. And you can really go down the rabbit hole with the fandom if you want to. I've honestly never been a part of a more enthusiastic fandom for OC, or real life stuff (donating to preserve historical tanks, anime pilgrimages)

S1 being only 12 episodes was indeed disappointing. I wanted the enjoy the comfy fun of S1 for much longer before the finale came. S2 had a completely different vibe. Right the first episode, we already know and can feel that the end is fast approaching, so having S2 be 26 episodes made it feel like we were taking our time enjoying their last year together after we barely got the chance to enjoy their first two years together. Imagine how much harder the ending could've hit had we gotten a full 12 episodes or more just for Azusa's introduction and her bonding with the seniors for an entire year. The build up to the ending would've been so much more painful.
