JJK ending was the worst thing that happened to CSM. After JJK ended, a whole bunch of unwashed ADD-ridden zoomer rapefugees rushed to find a replacement for their weekly shitposting, and for some reason CSM is listed as the top "similar to JJK" recommendation on every manga site. I guess because Crappa animated both. What made things worse is that the ending of JJK coincided with the Old Age Devil arc, specifically, the later half where the action picked up after months of characters talking, Yoru gained her gauntlets and was shooting shit left and right, and to an outside tourist the manga seemed like your typical people fight shonenslop with weekly dopamine gratification, just like their favorite JJK. So they rushed to speedread it, likely watched the anime first, then quickly binged it up to the latest chapter in a day or two, and then got hit with a terminal case of weekly schedule perplexity, whining how “nothing happens”, especially as the manga slowed back down and wasn’t satisfying their weekly dopamine rush with some ebin action any longer. The biweekly schedule also started getting prevalent exactly at this point which filtered them even harder.
Before this pleb wave showed up, we were having comfy threads and discussions even out of the most glacial events like the aquarium arc or the sushi arc, weekly whiteboards were a ton of fun, wholesome OCs were made, and so on. Oh boy, this topic again. Before this devolves into yet another Denji vs Asa war, I'll say that I think people focus too much on characters and attribute a perceived downfall to the presence and absence of said characters.
Which...makes sense, CSM IS a character driven story, but there are many other subtle things that Part 1 did that made it more enjoyable and more diverse.
Tone is a big thing, Part 1 more or less conducted itself more seriously as a shonen, comedy was ever present but as the story went on and the stakes grew, comedy was more or less relegated to specific characters such as Power and Kobeni. Gun arc is dead serious in it's presentation.
Part 2 on the other hand is more comedic, veering more towards satirical dark comedy, with the escalating stakes people assumed that the tone would shift in a similar manner to Part 1, especially seeing it as a continuation to Part 1's story, but that wasn't really the case and that didn't gel well with many readers.
Mystery is also another big factor, back in Part 1 everything was shiny and new, new devils and their powers were presented in an exciting manner and invited all forms of speculation, this includes the workings of contracts, classifications of devils etc.
Part 2 still introduces new concepts but not to the same degree of focus, it focuses more heavily on character drama instead, it never delves too long on specifics.
