Manga Thread
Been a while since we had one.
Let's discuss manga that can't sustain their own threads. Any interesting ones you picked up and want to talk about?

The few things I read for the first time recently were
>Fool Night
Needs no introduction probably, great manga and some of the best art in recent years.
>Usuzumi no Hate
Comfy post-apocalypse is like, my favorite genre, and while this one is less comfy than some it's still pretty nice and the art is good. The naruto reject kid really needs to go, though.
>Taiyou to Tsuki no Hagane
What is it about samurai failures that makes them so compelling? Nice classic supernatural samurai action manga. It's no Sengoku Youko but has some of the same vibes. Also a huge departure from Kasane, the previous well known series by the same mangaka, that I was personally never able to get into.
>Bug Ego
I'm not ONE glazer, but this might be my favorite out of everything he wrote. The humor sometimes goes too far and detracts from the spookiness but it's still solid.

Other than those I've been mostly catching up on some ongoing series that I haven't read in while, mostly with disappointing results.

>Fool Night
Glad it's getting official translations. I need to catch up one day. I stopped right around the introduction of the Central bad guys, I believe. One of the best currently running sci-fis imo. Morally grey which a plus in my book

>Wandance
Been reading Wandance since the anime has terrible animation. It's just going to keep butchering the next couple of chapters. The art is absolutely amazing.
>Killer Shark in Another World
Love watching our protagonist get bullied and survive every situation.
>the gods lie.
5 chapter and a good read short read. It ends bittersweet and glad both characters are in better situations.

Enjoying Genikasuri. It's the latest manga of Sako Toshio, the author of Usogui and Batuque.

It's a drama featuring boxing. It's about a boxer waking up from a coma, having lost everything. He realizes he was taken advantage of the promoters and coaches of the boxing world and vows to take revenge, by acting behind the scenes.

The protagonist Harima is like a mix between Baku from Usogui and Icchi from Batuque in design and personality.

Someone recommended Boku to Issho a while ago and since then I've been reading all of his other stories - I liked Wanitokagegisu and Himeanole, but it seems like translations for the latter have been dropped. In a similar vein - any good recommendations for autobiographical works? I enjoy reading artists talking about themselves or their hobbies.

Literally every chapter of Lock Up has been absolutely fucking incredible so far. For another wrestling themed manga that is just as good (but perhaps not in such an emotional heart wrenching way) I'd recommend Harukanaru Ring, was done in English a few months ago and also a short read (4 volumes). There's also Blue Ursus but it's written by Sandrovich so at some point it is going to become shit, great art so far though.

Japanese media in general pays too much attention to food and gourmet shit. Art has become so trite and vulgar that maybe there isn't any other content worth creating. It doesn't even make for a good read or a proper vicarious experience.
What's worse is that it's gotten to the point that writers will devote full pages to some faggot enjoying some regular omurice while saying umaii. It will even hijack plot lines in manga or stop some action because the director thought filming some OL stuff their face for 2 minutes would look good and 'relatable'.
I don't think reading about recipes, ingredients or calories adds anything to manga as an art form.
That's just your dumb consumer brain consooming whatever the fuck. Point in case, you just posted a spread about some fatty rushing home to eat white rice.

Considering how popular Shin-chan's dad's anime is right now in Japan, I guess it's just a matter of cultural difference.
Anonymous No.283126790 [Report]

I watched Shin-chan as a kid but I don't think I'd go out of my way to watch a show about his dad cooking rice with boiled weeds and conserved pears, or visit some random udon shop (I'm exaggerating, Nip food is mostly top tier but lots of stuff just have a plain flavor or are barely edible).
>cultural difference
They've been making doramas with the same awful production standards for the past 20 years and that shit is still popular.
Imagine if some Western TV network tried to put out something with the look and feel of 00s' Everwood or early Supernatural. Not that the West isn't trite or full of mass-produced crap, but iit's like the Japanese are stuck consuming the same stuff over and over.

Been going through my nearly 18 year old backlog of series that weren't completed yet. I do have on question. There are several mangas I remember reading, but their name's I've forgotten, and my memory doesn't allow for a description that can help me google them (doesn't help that Google gets progressively worse over time). They are:
>a witch cursed with immortality. One arc was in a dark town with canals.
>a more recent one, a manga based in modern times where gods appear. Looking at a god kills you. Protagonist is a woman I believe who saw one and has a cursed eye of sorts.
>one with flying ships going between flying islands. There was a massive towerlike town. Obviously not Drifting Dragons.

>Tateo Sone runs a pharmacy in Odawara and leads an ordinary but happy life with his beautiful wife and stepdaughter. One day, however, when his wife tells him she is pregnant, he is shocked. It's because he has a secret: he has never had a functioning lower half of his body. His wife's child is not his own. Tateo despairs at the thought. At that time, a man named Sumaoka happens to give him a mysterious ED drug. Tateo impulsively takes the drug and is shocked to find that the function of his lower body miraculously recovers. Tateo declares to Sumaoka that he will recreate and make this medicine himself. But this is the beginning of a dangerous day that will change his life forever!

He knows nothing about martial arts, fight choreography is extremely fucking lazy and that's not talking about how he physically cannot write stakes into any story. The majority of the hate towards the sequel comes from its existance instead of anything wrong in its content. It's a more comedic story with the same hitting life lessons. Along with a serious arc taking the latter half.

Before that I'd use MAL but they shut off all API calls from Tachiyomi. It probably works on Mihon or the newer forks.

I don't know what you're doing, but just add some title to your Suyayomi library and pick some source (i.e., manga site). If that source drops dead you can "migrate" to some other source in the client. Usually you can preserve progress seamlessly. It's a pain in the ass if you preemtively download shit for offline reading, but whatever.

I get what you mean but I disagree. For me this was more of an exploration of "stories" as a concept, and there is always more exploration that can be done. As it stands king and the MC being "monsters" feel incredibly tacked on to make a point or to just sell the stories to girls.
Continuing would break some of the full circleness of the story but in exchange it would also let it expand. Not to mention it could have gone the way of actual fairy tales and tell totally different stories with the same characters while fleshing everything more imho.

As the story focused more on the characters and the nuances of their strange situation made it much more compelling than trying to shoehorn in some reasoning as to why it occurs. It was very sweet and the main couple are delightful, especially since it's not some generic high school romance.

Finally somebody bringing usogui up.
I have actually started a second readthrough too, after finishing the manga last year.
One thing i want to say is that i dont get people who call abandoned mine the worst arc in the series. Sure, baku finding out about the cameras was complete bullshit, and after the trick was found Sadakuni looked like a total bitch, but to be honest it's probably the most soulful arc in the series and the first proper usogui arc. If someone asked me what usogui is about, i would give them picrel, Marco beating minowa, and the spread of baku and lalo thinking about their hands in air poker.
The worst arc to me is labyrinth. Everything baku does there is complete bullshit, the quality of the art plummets so hard that it you have to wait until KY declaration for it recover, and sako himself admitted that he made stuff up on the spot to keep the story going weekly.
My favorite gamble is battleship, even if the container search souichi goes on and the fighting sequences that follow are a bit unnecessary and awkward.

There's nothing wrong with a character getting the call to adventure either. He was like 7yo when the story started and got pushed towards a life path that lets him engage with the rest of the story. That's storytelling 101.

FKMT-related, FKMTkrazy dropped a Nikaidou chapter a month ago. I plan on dumping it once they drop a few more chapters a few more months down the line. Judging from the raws, Nikaidou is doing pretty well in the PGA tests but has been a total fuckup along the way.

PTSD Radio, which I still considered it one of the best horror anthologies in existence, and far from the usual "in your face" shock value shit your average horror manga tries to do and instead follows a more subtle narrative that you have to follow between each chapter. It may also have cursed the author of the manga at the process, which add some bonus points to the whole thing.

>"this is only here for the authors fetish"
You can't convince me this post was not written by someone that has cuck fetish on his mind 24/7.

But let me engage you in an actually genuine matter anon. The whole point of the manga is about PEOPLE running away from painfull confrontations one way or another and the pitfalls this eventually brings to their life. Characters only talk about their own experiences and their own reflections. When the MC takes responsibility for his wife its not because he is actually the sole responsible party for the situation but because he realizes his mistakes and wants confront and fix things whatever the cause or result may be (hence the "settled it black and white"). MC's old crush is never the mouthpiece of the author either, she is as much of a guild ridden selfish retard as most of the other characters are.
On that note this is a series pretty similar to kurosawas where if you don't want to engage with what they are talking about you will just make retarded greentext posts while missing their whole points.

To answer your question it's probably the Ali Jr. arc in Baki for two reasons
1. It's really the son of Mohammad Ali
2. He repeatedly keeps getting jumped by the main cast even when walking on crutches because "real fights happen at any time and this isn't sports"

I was stunned when that title drop came up while Cynthea was jumping around the library. Up to this day I also still adore this page (and many more) so much because of the way he structured the panels + art. I catched some of the author's live stream and he sadly said he would lose motivation sometimes, so he would only draw during the times he is passionate (hence the frequent breaks). Really sucks since we're probably not even 1/3 done. Shiyakusho - It's about managing the afterlife by the employees and the stories of people that die. It is the best for the absurd atmosphere.

Can't remember two cyberpunk titles. One was Isekai before the Isekai fad, spaceship crashing on planet and the hibernated protag waking up getting rescued by the lady wearing enhancements like Edge of Tomorrow. Other was about licking body parts to charge the cybernetics to oppose monsters, had 2 teams of 2 males and 2 females. Anyone knows?

A lotta doujin lol, some indos are really into manga. I read a bunch of history books but the most interesting ones are often translated from Dutch. The most enjoyable non-fiction read I had was the Buru Quartet books, but it's a bit like reading the O'Brien cycle where you have to pause every few pages to look up a place or term. Mostly I read manga in indonesian I couldn't find in English, that took up a huge amount of time, which is why I decided not to do Japanese also Indonesian is a thousand times easier, although I still struggle with some words and the knowledge that a lotta people there apparently don't even use Bahasa everyday, preferring regional dialects

I too am one of the few that like Yona Yona Yona quite a lot. Many just weren't paying attention, or maybe unwilling to notice the pacing of events, that volume 1 was setting the stage and volume 2 was executing the main heist taking place over 1 night so they're like what is even going on most of the time. A prominent complaint was pacing because of stomach namek during the break months of the magazine, even though it was only 2 chapters and dealing with the final boss.
But even then, it's a work of many unrealized potentials. It was his first foray into a more action oriented piece and it left you wanting for more, in that there was almost always not enough since he was struggling with it a lot in production. Comedy and subtle yet impactful character chemistry are definitely his strongest crafts.
And even though the story was meant to be short to begin with, probably 3 - 4 volumes at most and they seemed to have been readying for a new serialization from him afterwards, it was cut anyway and he stopped publishing there, leaving things the more awkward the more towards the end you get. The emotional hit that was supposed to be building up to Hakone and Sumizumi's past didn't get a chance to be presented at all.
It's one I always get sad thinking about and glad when someone else mentions liking. The best timeline would've had him continue delivering masterpieces in glorious Aokishi B5+ print.

Because I've studied Chinese for 5 years in junior high and that was hard as fuck, Indonesian uses an alphabet I've grown up with, has no conjugation of verbs, plural is just the word twice, it's one of the easiest languages in the world to pick up if you're just looking for a basic grasp of it. I'm very bad with memorization and typically only start truly improving with a language once I'm good enough to start reading and watching stuff without my notes to help me. Overall I just don't enjoy the language learning process, if I can't absorb it through media I give up fast.
