So, out of curiosity, I read some of the Overlord novels.
I’ve got to say, I sort of kind of understand why people liked it—but still...
The style of writing, where the MC is constantly strategizing, overthinking things, and viewing everything in game terms, would be interesting to me... if there were any real stakes.
granted I don’t usually read isekai, so for all I know, this style of writing might be cliché and overdone

I wouldn't say its a missed opportunity since the author must have made bank writing about some overpowered asshole , I can respect the hustle.

What about seeing the stakes in the MC's sense of self, who is subtly struggling against some kind of corruption that erodes his current self while he tries to remain as himself?
But noooo it's apparently not "real stakes" unless the MC gets pushed back in some unga-bunga battle that's about punching the hardest these days...

The only thing in the world that could compete with Ainz is another player group getting teleported into the new world after a few hundred years. There's maybe a couple of dozen items and beings that could conceivably pose a threat to a level capped NPC. And the Guild has enough resources to spam ressurect through that and to block wild magic with world items.

at least OP kind of understand why Overlord is liked but what is it with skates that makes it important. for a medium that is supposedly diverse, it really feels like i'm the only one that actually looking for the thinking and strategizing, the back and forth decision making on how the fight is done, with gaming/rpg slop as a guilty pleasure preference.
it's just my shit taste but still hypothetically i would prefer -obvious curb-stomp with nothing to lose but with a good fight's back and forth counter accounting each other's arsenal of weapons, armors, and skills- rather than idk -enemy about to destroy the country mc built, mc just 1-shot them with his very recently learned skill that just so happen to counter the enemy, country saved- yeah idk i don't give any attention to steaks.

Overlord really shat the bed with this & kind of shed the light on what a hackfest the novel is.
He does, from time to time, muse about both his unusual emotional state and humanity. BUT the author doesn't really go anywhere with it or develop it into anything, rather, it seemed like just padded content - writing to fill in the gaps. UNTIL Ainz decides to wipe a fucking country off the map out of the blue. Without blinking an eye. Then right after doing that, he's back to "normal". No development. Nothing at all.

Overlord is a comedy. It is not a battle series. It is established very early on that Ainz and Nazarick are the top dogs on the whole world and there's nothing that can challenge them. Whether or not Ainz can survive a battle with some new worlder is not the point. The whole fact that he over prepares is a running gag (see: comedy) because he never actually needs to, but he's so paranoid he thinks he does. Most of the humor from Overlord comes from dramatic irony where we as the audience know what the characters don't. That's why we constantly get the inner monologues of the characters, because seeing how everyone is constantly misinterpreting the situation is funny.
In fact you want stakes? There are some. Ainz doesn't want to get revealed to his colleagues. He is a salary man with impostor syndrome and doesn't know how to do any of this so he just fumbles his way through. He desperately doesn't want the floor guardians to find this out and just tries to keep larping to get through the day. Seeing him do this is funny.
How you miss the point is beyond me but if you honestly think overlord is about fighting or that it would be "better" if there were "stakes" you either need to go reread all the volumes or just kill yourself.

The end of the last season was underwhelming when the princess did the thing they foreshadowed in the most heavy-handed way possible. That was something they could have made comedic too, but they went for a (failed) dark tone with it.

Notably the author is actively trying to sabotage his own series and the last few volumes reflect that with him speeding up developments and killing his own worldbuilding for the sake of ending the series faster. To be fair I think destroying the kingdom, in a vacuum, was not out of line for the series. It made sense for them to do at some point. But the time and place it was done was just pretty much because the author wants to wrap up the story not because it made sense at the current time. The whole thing being sparked by a dipshit noble trying to fuck albedo was pretty hilarious but it doesn't retroactively justify it.
Renner herself I don't think was ever THAT funny. It was amusing to see Climb constantly be an idiot and not realize how much he was being manipulated, but it's one of those things that is funnier as it's happening rather than having a funny conclusion. Well of course "climb you have to be a demon so you can fuck me please climb" was amusing but this is more a symptom of the volume itself rather than the micro arc with her, just in the notion of trying to end the series faster. Adding an anime only dance scene didn't help there

Yeah it certainly seems like Overlord seems to initially try to cover some kind of "man vs self" conflict, but ended up abandoning it when the author started losing interest in his own series and shortened it from his initial ambitious intentions of making it a 30+ volumes long series.

Takuto from Mynoghra (top left) has some sort of double identity of being both the chronically ill human from earth, Takuto Ira, as well as the "Nameless God", with both uniting in the entity known as the "King of Ruin".
There is constant ambiguity whether Takuto or the Nameless God is in control or whether they are actually truly one and the same.

Makoto from Tsukimichi (top right) literally pretends to be a "normal human" such as when losing his facade and killing someone in rage, he has to remember that the death of someone is supposed to make you sad, so he just cries on the spot.

Rimuru from TenSura (bottom left) has internal monologues using his facade that don't match or even outright contradict his actual actions. In certain situations his "mask" shows cracks in it showing glimpses of his true inner self.
At times it's made as obvious as possible (e.g. having him wear an actual mask that ends up with an actual crack in it) yet a large chunk of the audience fails to or even outright refuses to recognize it for some reason and insist that Rimuru is exactly as depicted by his surface personality instead.
He also has a split-up part of his soul serving as his snarky AI assistant.

Van from Death Mage (bottom right) is a literal Frankenstein monster whose soul is the composition of 4 different individuals.
And he has weird eldritch dreams that affect reality.
And he splits himself into different people regularly, even sending one of his splits into a different universe to watch a little girl.
Yeah, it's as weird as it sounds.

To be fair, he came from the world of cyberpunk corporatocracy dystopia, the game he played for over decade was paranoid as fuck and encouraged said paranoia, and he was basically a boss of infamous inhuman assassins whose base was once raided by a horde of max level "heroes", and in the end was basically abandoned by everyone.
Plus, if he had some friends with him, he probably would be much less insecure, and much less anxious about preserving Nazarick as a sort of monument. And he himself said that after becoming a lich for real, he actually started to think less human. Not to mention that automatic emotion suppressor, which filters everything below certain threshold.

Like I said in a previous post, there is currently this whole ridiculous notion that anything that isn't "man vs man conflict with explicit win-or-lose tension" is deemed "not real stakes" and thus automatically makes it "self-insert wish-fulfillment power-fantasy" and all sorts of other buzzwords, which in reality is just people wanting to pretend that their own preferred fiction is somehow "high-brow recreation" that's elevated above other fiction despite the fact that, except for case-studies for actual educational purposes, all fiction is fiction, i.e. a "time-waster" and those people just refuse to acknowledge that, which makes them create these false dichotomies that use made-up clearly subjective traits as points of distinction that ignore the traits that have usually been used to evaluate quality of fictional works.

Note how when evaluating isekai in particular, people have been talking about (usually very superficial) "tropes" as the main point, which is utterly ridiculous because tropes have never been a way to evaluate anything ever before, as the usual criteria are usually story, characters, world-building, etc. as well as lyrical tools and such, and not "tropes and clichés". So it's different rules for thee and not for me. If you argue about the tropes or their absence you have already been pulled into a dishonest game that you can only lose. The only argument they'll have is circular logic bullshit like "hurr hurr isekai could not possible have any clever stories/characters/narratives ever because it's isekai!" and the like.

I can understand wanting an MC who overpowers through battles by using his game knowledge and superior strategy skills, but you have shows like No Game No Life and Log Horizon for that. Overlord's stakes present themselves not through the main character, but through the perspectives of other characters, like the lizardmen, or Climb, or the princess, or the Empire's king. Half of the story is other characters' reactions to Nazarick, and half is the misunderstandings and jokes that happen with Ainz. If I had to describe it more precisely, it would be that Ainz is not really the main character, at least not like most other isekais' MC's.

Author wanted to make a story about OP protagonist doing OP protaganist things. That's the main point of the story, everything else stems from this.

He also wanted to avoid writing a more typical isekai story as much as possible, make a more sandbox-like story if you will, but he just keeps throwing around ideas without properly developing any of them or just keeps abandoning them half-way through.
That's the main problem of Overlord.

I think Maruyama's original intent was to have Ainz be a schizo who is actually as smart as Demiurge/Albedo claim he is and the Suzuki Satoru self is just a surface personality that rationalizes all his true self's decisions as a combination of unexpected coincidences and whims. The whole teased "IRL" stories brought up in the AOG character profiles might also play into the story at some point, maybe with Ainz eventually "invading" the corporate dystopia via some kind of inter-dimensional portal or such.
But then Maruyama decided to cut Overlord short and abandoned all those storylines to quickly wrap the story up in the next few volumes.

If I was writing the story I'd probably make it so TouchMe gets to the new world, defeats Ains for sake of justice, but rather than killing him they both return to reality and deal with the real monsters there. And the end is all his former guild allies being set free.

I'm not disputing what he wants, but it was presented in a pretty elaborate way, that all his friends moved on from the game and got on with their lives. Multiple times. The show literally starts with him being left all alone with the slime guildmate briefly visiting and expressing his surprise that there's anyone left at all before departing.
