this summary of the romance is literally how i put it when thinking about this in my head. it is incredibly lucky/unlucky for denji to find someone that is broken just the same way he is and then they die.

The more I think about CSM, the more I find I like. All the characters are interesting and appealing. I love Denji as the protagonist. His attitude is honestly pretty inspiring. I love the human struggle and how it makes even the villains relatable, instead of being the stereotypical "cool kids". Reze's mask drop scene in the rain, the fighting spirit in the face of obstacles, might have been the best scene of the movie, together with the pool scene.

That's the point. He doesn't know anything about love until Reze. She proposes 'teaching him everything'. The pool scene is explicitly about how the two are mutually vulnerable to each other (nudity), Denji is experiencing love for the first time outside of lust.

The message of the arc is pretty much in-your-face as far as Fujimoto is concerned. It's about the pain of a bygone, naive, love that you can't really move on from fully.
He also had a passage in an interview about the 'shaky' or transient camera work when they are at the festival, which was meant to encapsulate the fleeting sweet moments of a love that is painful when recalled later in life.
I think it's baseless to even refer to Makima as Denji's 'first love'. Reze is supposed to be an immature and naive first love, and Asa is supposed to be a more thoughtful, developed one.

About 30 chapters in when people were busy discussing how Asa "must have autism" to explain all her awkwardness and untimely tripping almost nobody wanted to listen when there were a few that suspected Asa was tripping on purpose. It was aN unpopular take but I could understand why people wanted to give the protagonist the benefit of doubt since it was not meant to be something exposed until much later. Well now we have confirmation. I still think Asa is crying crocodile tears even now because I find it hard to trust a character that has not only admitted to her character selfish flaw that previously could not be proven(until the ch121), but continued to trip herself up after her self reflection(while she was trying to rescue Denji from the devil detention center).

Asa blew herself up like she said she would, so what? The stakes are low. California will heal her right back up good as new. remember when back at the sushi place Kobeni was talking about how scary Asa was that losing an arm didn't phase her? foreshadowing. Denji also told her he didn't want her to die. CSM doesn't have to wait for an opening to eat Yoru, he could have taken chunks out of Yoru the entire time they were fighting and also ate her completely years before this point if he really thought erasing her was a good idea. I think Asa knows there is little chance of either Denji or CSM following through with her plea to be eaten at this point in the battle. Most of all even if you disregard how confident Asa might feel about Denji not following through, it's incredibly strange for Asa to bring up how Death would rule the world once Yoru is gone if she's trying to convince Denji to kill her. It's like when Fumiko was trying to convince Denji that Death was just using him and said too much and exposed how Public Safety was just trying to use him too. Asa said too much to plant a contrary motivation against the appeal she wanted to make, that's why I think she's still crying crocodile tears.

The mess that is part 2 is because he thought of something so kino to end with but just didn't know how to get there, so he thought he would just fill it all in with The Big Lebowski. These last 20 chapters or so are testament to that as they're really getting good, it's just such a shame that he could have condensed the middle 100 chapters into like 30.

Take Nayuta for example, she served zero purpose to the plot and was basically just filler content. Look at the story now and ask what she had to do with any of it?
