The reason it doesn't work for me is that, with just some rewriting, I could just as much see early Fumiko becoming the love interest as I could Asa.

In the example the thing the father has to kill both himself and the kid for is so inexcusable that ending both of their lives as an apology would be the right/good thing to do for, not just those that were wronged, but also the kid .
