There is good data from various experiments that both men and women attempt to date out of their league in terms of looks. The problem is that neither sex is very likely to date down significantly, so they usually end up somewhat looksmatched - at least in short term dating contexts. Couples emerging from dating apps tend to be more looksmatched than couples that emerged from other contexts.
In long-term dating contexts, this is mediated by other traits, e.g. people are more willing to overlook a lack of attractiveness if they get along really well, if they have other things to offer, etc.

I don't know whether they differentiate between initial messages, overall messages, etc. - but as I said: who gets messaged the most is actually not that interesting, much more interesting is how attractiveness relates to who matches, and people tend to be somewhat looksmatched. I think the sex hungry Chads who inflate the standards of average looking girls are much more rare than people tend to think - also, because women tend to be more prude than men. While the average girls are likely to respond to Chads, they're not as likely to have sex with them as many think. There have been plenty of experiments in that direction: men are much more likely to agree to casual sex than women. The important conclusion from the study was that men almost exclusively messaged women whose photos they rated highly, while women messaged men almost *independently* of how they rated their photos. Women don't care about looks; men care about nothing else.

The study simply looked at who sent a first message and how that compared to how they rated the photos of the people that they were messaging. If you are going to try to argue that the data is invalid because the men who started conversations were actually looking for relationships while women were merely looking for validation, then you're going to have to *prove* that women look for validation far more than men do. If both sides seek it equally then those effects will cancel each other out and the data from the study remains valid.

And honestly, that's a non-starter for you, because I was actually on OKCupid back then, and if a woman messaged you first, she absolutely wanted a date; while if a man messaged a woman first, 9 times out of 10 he just wanted to trade nudes. It was heartbreaking how many women's profiles said "Please don't message me unless you actually want to go on a date, I have no interest in trading photos".

Women who are various degrees of narcissistic themselves respond positively to narcissistic guys, being drawn to their grandiose self-portrayal, their displays (or stories) of wealth, future success, etc. - thinking of themselves as particularly deserving of such a special guy, and possibly more likely to use the opportunity to go to bed with him (sometimes also to feel validated by bedding someone special). Yes, and those big egos are drawn to guys who are similar, who are also less likely to commit (also more likely to cheat, etc.) - but the issue is: the same applies to those women. They're also less likely to commit and more eager to cheat, grow discontent with their relationships and so on. To some degree this is not great for these women either, and many of the men also don't consciously aim to have one relationship after another. It's often not fun for these people either seeing their relationships fall apart again and again (even though they play a part in that). While I haven't played it, I think the Dishonored series is somewhat 'like' Bioshock, so it might be something you could look into.

Otherwise there is obviously System Shock (there is also a remake on Steam) and the (in my opinion even better) System Shock 2. These games are spookier and harder, so depending on your tolerance for spookiness and a bit of jank from older titles, you could look into them.
Other than that, there is Deus Ex, for which the same applies. You could also look into the newer Deus Ex games, e.g. Human Revolution and Manking Divided, which are more forgiving, less janky and more modern in terms of presentation.
