The weird part is, unless you can find a really good stick, like a prized stick that you keep around with you, the average stick you're going to pick up will just uselessly shatter when you swing it against an animal. Animals are fucking tough, when you kick a dog the only thing stopping it from just running back up and making you pay for it is domestication and training. They get hurt, but it's probably not even going to bruise.
The stick is generally a worthless weapon vs anything tougher than a human (most things) unless it's paired with its eternal partner, sharp rock.
In general, when you're thinking of picking up a weapon, you should be looking for rocks, not sticks. Humans are the best lifeforms on the planet at throwing things, and it'll even be better for swinging, despite your thinking that the range difference would make it worse.
