An alcoholic has moved in to the apartment complex next to us and he has a neurotic pitbull with him that lunges and barks at everything that moves.
Since he's intoxicated almost every time he's outside he can barely control it and one time the leash slipped out of his hand it almost jumped on my dog, luckily I managed to grabb the pitbull by its harness before it could do any damage but the incident scared the hell out of me and I'm anxious everytime I'm out walking with the my dog. You can't get more of a quick and humane braindeath than that. The most amount of mess you would get is blood running from the exit wound of a .22lr but if you use sand to absorb it you will find it can be cleaned up easy peasy.

I think free feeding is retarded if your have an untrained dog. Let me know if my theory is right. My gf has a 4 year old mini schnauzer. He is house trained but I can tell he doesn't respect her because she spoiled him his entire life. She always had him on an extendable leash and let him leads the walks, he seems to only do commands if there sre treats involved, and he always grazes during the day. She wants to make him behave on walks and not pull or bark at other dogs so I got her to chsnge to a 6 foot leash and she is working on that but I think him always having food whenever he wants, not having to learn to be patient and wait for it, not having to sit amd stay for it has made him really spoiled and doesn't see her as any sort of authority figure. I think if she wants yom to start behaving better she needs to reset boundaries and part of that is taking away his food and only gets 2 meals a day. Thoughts?

I'm from Australia too but I moved to the USA in my mid 20s. Grew up with kelpies so I had some experience with herding dogs already but never had a heeler before and also never really raised one myself until this. He needs about 2 hours of exercise a day minimum. Less than that and he's a terrorist. Also needs lots of playtime and mental stimulation but he's only 8 months old so that'll get easier as he gets older. I live in a small house with a very small yard but live close to lots of hiking trails, parks and the beach so i can make it work. Also my wife works from home so she plays with him a lot during the day and takes him out to the park to play with other dogs. I don't think you need to have acreage to make it work, just need to be willing to put in a lot of work, although it would certainly be easier if we just had a big farm he could roam around on all day. Growing up we rarely 'exercised' our kelpies but we had about a half acre plot that was big enough for them to wear themselves out in.

The couple of times he's run off it's been because he saw a runner on the trail and he started chasing them. I think his herding instinct makes him just want to chase moving things rather than go off on a sniffing mission like a terrier or hunting dog would.
