I just buy whatever I like at Costco because it's guaranteed to have at least a decent price due to their pricing policy.
I wouldn't spend more than $2 on Talisker, though.

while true, its probably more to do with the fact an age statement would raise the price and dissuade consumers because low number not as good as big number. Seeing Ardbeg's 5 yr Wee Beastie on shelves for $60 is laughable, but I knew it was coming.

>>21497785
Laphroaig's former head guy of 30 years says its distillate doesn't even become Laphroaig until it's in the 5-6 year old range and their flagship bottling is the 10 year old.

Lots of factors play into the intensity and overall flavor profile across the decades. My Laphroaig 16 that was 100% New American Oak matured is just as peaty as the rest in the core range and some limited releases(Cairdeas).

The profiles only start to significantly shift once into the 20-25 year old stock or if you get something bottled from the Williamson days.

I did the "You Do Bourbon Experience," which meant tasting barrel-proof batch varieties of Bernheim, Larceny, Elijah Craig Bourbon, and Elijah Craig Rye, and having the opportunity to bottle one of those yourself. I picked the Larceny offering, it was pretty cool pouring the bottle and labeling it yourself. Food at the restaurant was decent but not amazing. We were too late in the day to have a shot at picking up any Old Fitz allocated stuff if they had it.
>Wild Turkey
We did the Russell’s Reserve tasting, which was pretty cool, the visitor's center was really nice and in a pretty valley. Got to taste Russell's 13 for probably the only time, which was great. Picked up a Russell's Master Distiller Private Select bottle before the tasting because there was only 2 left.
>Whiskey Thief Distilling Co.
This was not originally on the itinerary but got added at the last minute. This was the best experience of all of them, though. It's a very small operation out of basically 2 barns in the middle of nowhere, they don't distribute and you can only get their whiskey from that location. You taste and can bottle your own straight from the barrel, uncut and unfiltered. Nothing blew my socks off, but the 6-year, 120 proof rye was pretty damn good so I bottled my own 350ml bottle from a thief. There was a food truck and good cocktails, dogs, cats, and goats hanging around. It was like having rich neighbors who were throwing a party, very chill.

>Buffalo Trace
By some miracle we got a spot on their main tour, and it was the opposite of Whiskey Thief, a super corporate Disney-like experience with a very rushed and timed-to-the-minute tour. Some of the history was interesting, but it was a blur. The gift shop had Eagle Rare and EH Taylor Small Batch stacked to the ceiling so I grabbed a bottle of each since I can't get it at MSRP where I live. Very soulless for the most part.
>James Beam
We did the "Small Batch Innovation Tasting" which was mostly Knob Creek, Bookers, and Overholt offerings. Got to try KC18 for the first time and bought a bottle for a special occasion but I wasn't impressed by the Bookers stuff.
>Four Roses
This was the bottling and aging facility down the road from Beam, not the distillery. I'd been on this tour before, but I took my brother and his gf since they were more interested in the aging process than the distilling. It was a shorter version of the tour, since they were in their production shutdown for the summer, so we just had a tasting, the usual spiel, and a tour of a rickhouse.
>Misc.
Went to a "speakeasy" type cocktail bar in downtown Louisville called Hell or High Water that was really relaxed and had great cocktails. Also had my first pour of Stagg Jr. at the hotel bar which I really liked, gonna need to find a bottle at some point.

Wild Turkey, Whiskey Thief, BT, and Beam were all on a tour package where we got taken between the distilleries in a sprinter van. Since it was all timed out, we felt a wee bit rushed at times but it was worth it to be able to relax and not have to worry about a DD, plus we got breakfast at a local hotel and our lunch at Whiskey Thief included.

I'm convinced that the majority Buffalo Trace allocation is manufactured.
Buffalo Trace was taken off allocation here in Kansas City recently....before it was almost impossible to find a bottle, now every grocery store and even Costco has giant stacks of Buffalo Trace that nobody is buying. Of course their other stuff is nowhere to be seen in any of the stores (probably sold on the secondary market).
Anonymous No.21513892

I think you might be right, but I also think they are starting to recover from the massive surge in demand for the allocated stuff. Like I've said in other threads, I know anecdotally that EHT and ER are sitting on shelves in some areas now, but that hasn't happened yet where I live. I wouldn't be surprised if they are deliberately stingy with the Blantons, though. I feel bad for the tour guides at BT because I'm sure they just constantly get questions about how to get Pappy and Blantons (there were drunk boomers on my tour that wouldn't shut up about Blantons)

I work with a major liquor conglomerate and my rep with them was telling me within 1-2 years expect all the allocated stuff to become common. About 4-6 years ago all the distilleries 4x'd production and that stuff is beginning to come out.

I used to see Blantons and Eagle Rare sitting on the shelf years ago, sometimes discounted if nobody was buying it. Most of the interest in BT products is purely because people want what they can't have. That alone is extremely valuable to the distillery.

Glen Moray Elgin Classic. £20 here for a simple single malt with some nice apple notes and none of the harshness that's ubiquitous in cheap scotch. Also Wild Turkey 101.

>ubiquitous in cheap scotch
it's not as bad in single/blended malts as opposed to blended scotch because the column still grain components are purely filler, leaving you tasting the good stuff less and the bad more.

Lismore NAS is 100% Glenfarclas single malt aged 3-8 years in tired hogsheads and usually cheaper than Glen Moray. biggest difference is Glenfarclas official bottlings will be sherry matured because its character lends itself to that flavor range whereas Glen Moray is fine in ex bourbon. for not much more money Arran's and Glencadam's start to become available.

also cheap scotch is easily improved with tea spooning in practically any single malt, especially if its heavily peated and/or high proof. dont be afraid to do home blends in a glass as an experiment. just be conservative in your ratios to start with and see how it goes. I find most variations quite favorable.

They're not made in massive quantities, as you can see here >>21522597, it's 1 of 128 bottles from that barrel. So only 128 bottles will ever exist for that specific bourbon.

Beyond that they're sought after and well liked by the people who hunt for them.

Not only would I not want to stop enjoying mixed drinks, I dont have the expendable funds to continue that lifestyle. It's best this way.

Ummm so I have too much fucking whisk(e)y it’s spilling out of my closet and now starting to take up a second closet. Why the fuck are people doing this whisky hoarding shit again? I’m kind of at a loss for words as to why I do this…
Is there a place to sell whisky? I don’t even care about whisky that much anymore after a decade of this collecting nonsense. Yeah it tastes like fucking whisky big whoop. There will always be a decent bottle to buy on the shelf there is no need to hoard it. Stupid fucking hobby I never should have started. I’m not buying any more bottles for another decade unless I sell a lot of this shit.
I drink one 50ml pour of whisky a couple times a week. At this rate I might never run out of whisky before I die and then my whisky collection gets passed to someone that doesn’t even give a fuck about it.

>I’m not buying any more bottles for another decade
problem solved
>I drink one 50ml pour of whisky a couple times a week
the alternative way to solve the problem is to up your drinking rate. that’s what I did and I’ve been chipping away through my backlog quite nicely. After I’m back down to a reasonably sized collection I probably won’t inflate it again since I’ve gone through the “everything’s new and exciting to me” phase and will only pick up truly obscure niche shit moving forward. some of the cheapest bottles are completely drinkable and delicious. look for the absolute cheapest stuff and try each one until you decide one tastes good to you. they're all manufactured to be massively appealing. for me it's jack daniels (not bonded. their formula tastes best at 40% in their old no. 7 bottle) but you can go cheaper than that and be just fine. for jim beam i would recommend bonded over the white label but again it's drinkable as can be, it's made to be that way. the question is which one has a mashbill that your taste buds will prefer. you can find bottles for $10 or less that are fine

More deeply, my dad died of alcoholism like 20 years ago now. I often had dreams where he'd embarrass me and then I kill him. No, bottom price is US price, just the lowest price found for that year.

In Japan the MSRP is ¥55,000 (~$375) but it's very hard to find at that price, even in Japan. More likely you'd pay ¥80,000-110,000 ($550-750).
