The thing people overreacted to wasn't just a comment with episode 4 - in the scene outside the building, Gangle clearly recognizes a pattern of behavior of Ragatha not being genuine. In fairness, Gangle's not really holding it against Ragatha. It just means Gangle doesn't see Ragatha as a person to get any real support from, even if that might be what Ragatha thinks she is providing.

Meta-wise, pretty much anyone who's had, and especially masked, depression is likely familiar with the "if I just say some nice things I don't really believe then they'll stop acting sad" response from people. It's rarely (consciously) intended this way, but in practice it typically means regurgitating platitudes to get the depressive person to "put the mask back on." It is also the response that teaches masking behavior in the first place.

There's a certain perspective where what Jax said to her is less hurtful than what Ragatha said ("I like you better when you're [not masking]" from an asshole stings less than "You're kind of annoying when [you're masking]" from someone like Ragatha, because masking in depression is literally an attempt to make people like Ragatha less uncomfortable). However, for his comment to be any more than a frustrated jab would require Jax understanding (and caring) that Gangle can still be miserable under there even with a smile on her face.

I'm sure there's at least some Ribbun fanfiction out there that frames him targeting the comedy mask that way (though despite his reputation he hasn't ever actually broken it on purpose; even in episode 3 the toss doesn't break it). It is kind of odd how Jax never tries to find out if the tragedy mask can break. Seems like something he'd do at some point. Also odd that he never targets the plastic mask at all.

Still, Ragatha would need to be heavily recontextualized to upset most of the fandom... but we haven't gotten much Ragatha focus, so that's technically still on the table.

Honestly thats a really sad scenario if you think of it, because we know he has had to dismiss his own guidelines to make "matoor" and "realistic" adventures to entertain the adult cast he has taken care of for years.

Imagine if one day a kid player joined and really loved being there in the circus and playing along the funny gags Caine pulls and no one cared about before but then got horribly scared once thrown into an adventure because at that point Caine is so used to the adult ideas of entertainment that he can't create kid friendly games anymore. He would be devastated that after all those years and him trying his best to keep his image clean in spite of an ever demanding audience, he has submitted to change and is not competent to truly fulfill his original purpose anymore

I've thought about that before like how would Caine be with actual kids? I bet he'd be so happy and the kids would probably go along easily with whatever he said and it would be so much less aggravation for him.

I think we always forget Caine was already into one of his own adventures in Spudsy as the "CEO", well technically not his idea but he made it, and all he did was muck around and draw while checking his emails until employee evaluation took place and even then he simply gave everyone (sans Kinger) a B+, credit where credit is due tho he did kept an eye on them going by the fact that he had photos of their activities and gave feedback in comparison to him just simply sending them through the portal and doing whatever the fuck else in the meantime.

I guess he would simply autodesignate himself as an overseer and watch everything unfold adding commentary or narrating things as they happen because he wouldn't know what else to do with himself while the others do the work
If he was forced to participate he would behave like a bumbling idiot and try to push the task on anybody else on the pretense of "nuhuh it would be cheating if I did it"/"these adventures are meant to be finished by humans only"
