You might be jesting, but that could probably be what pushes him over the edge

Not only does the cast prefer their own suggestions over his work/ideas but now it turns out the cast can literally create their own fun without needing to ask him for things or being sent to another map in turn making him completely obsolete. He might even start to hate them for taking away even the most basic aspect of his directive, "to entertain"

Oh great I can finally share my schizoest theory yay
It will be revealed that Kinger is the one who made it so the players are stuck because he planned to be there with his wife only but didn't account for other people trying the game and getting stuck themselves.

Caine is the Pearl in this scenario, it will turn out that he does have the power to change minds (but not delete memories or some caveat) and Kinger asked him to make him forget about that entirely which is what ultimately got his mind scrambled but before doing that he asked Caine to promise him to keep the secret and forget as well, which Caine did.

He absolutely has darkness brewing under the code, unfortunately his darkness isn't pitch and dangerous just lonely and kinda pathetic.

I would love to see him lash out anyway, if only for how it would scare everyone out of their asses and put into perspective how damn helpless they are against Caine going down and deciding to actively be hostile

Sometimes I think people give to much of a good relationship to Kinger and Caine. If anything I would expect Kinger to initially be mad and exasperated at him during their first days and after figuring out there was no way out, kinger getting some slight second hand cringe from some of Caine's dialogues and animations that made it to his final design (probably not made by him) and trying to distance himself with Queenie, learning to roll with the punches the circus gave to both of them only to eventually seclude himself after her abstraction and having his bitterness from the start getting tempered by years of seeing folks coming and going until eventually become the wise but aloof figure he is nowadays

maybe he has tried to reconnect with Caine across years but never getting a good chance because Caine himself is distant in his own way

Oh yeah I know it's extremely out there from what we'll likely get explained if anything about Caine's origin is to be of importance at all but that's the fun of speculating about it I guess.

Actually I doubt anything about Caine or the game's past is going to be thoroughly of relevance, him and the circus are the place and 'enforcer' of the situations that will bring the cast to the final conclusion of "meaning in a stagnant life" message but I do see Caine included in and learning that message as well. him learning more about himself through the struggle he puts the human through despite always separating himself and indulging in the "ignorance is bliss" of himself could be interesting

>How would Caine actually react to pain?
He seems to play by gag logic, as in, it would only "hurt" him if it was funny but there would be no physical damage in itself he would simply act like he was in a cast or plop a funny bandage over the injury like that would heal him but he's just playing it for laughs.

I don't think he would be able to discern actual harming intentions, he already struggles to understand what humans find funny or good so if someone really went at him with clear meaning to hurt/kill with some weapon or barehanded he would simply restrain the person and send them to their room kek. Like, what did the human think it would happen? Lil guy wouldnt -physically- punish severely unless it was in the service of Fun™

Speaking of pain, he seems very aware of the psychological trauma he inflicts upon the humans because of his adventures, even disclaiming how its all unintentional but never putting the word to make the adventures less traumatizing as is "the trauma" was some part of the experience.
It makes me wonder what his directive entails regarding adventures or if he really cares about their lives outside of keeping them intrigued so he can perpetuate his directive because it doesn't seems he has the humans' best interest or safety into consideration aside of some basice-level accomodations

He was probably really freaked out of his mind for a good chunk of time before the coding kicked in and/or players started to appear
also he cried like a baby when his first iteration of Bubble bit his finger

he is just doing his best but there's much more room to explore and grow through hurt. The only thing I hope is that he keeps his fucking whimsy at the end
