OK, new idea

Caine decides to make more "personal" adventures based on their true desires. revealing some personal information none of them wanted the others to know.

Zooble is revealed to have been unhappy, a drug user with tattoos who slept around looking for approval, and it just made her hate herself more and more. They vote to move on, except Jax.

Gangle is revealed to have never had a boyfriend, and dropped out of art school because she couldn't deal with criticism of her work, and when she entered the game was on leave from work because she tried to kill herself after betting a B+ on a performance review. Jax starts the vote to move on.

Pomni is revealed to have been deeply risk averse to the point of never going outside her comfort zone as a child, never doing anything interesting as a kid, then trying to overcompensate as an adult but still mostly spending time alone and never forming close friendships. The gang lets it play out.

Jax is revealed to have been badly bullied as a child [Jax calls vote to skip it, everyone votes no] after confessing his feelings for another boy, left badly beaten in a corn field. He ran away from home after his father beat him when he found out he was gay, and he scrapped by working a minimum wage job at fast food place, he was a very shy, nervous guy. Basically Evil Jax was his personality before the circus. When it starts to be about his relationship with Ribbit, Ragatha starts a new vote to skip it, everyone except Zooble votes to skip.

Kinger relives a date with his wife, and her spiral into depression and obsession with their virtual reality software company after having a miscarriage... And they start to realize Cain is suppressing his thoughts for a reason... and they realize they can vote to stop this suppression...

The release pace suggests they aren't really expanding at all. If I were to guess as to why Gangle is silent and doesn't move as a Rhino, it's because all of that was set up as a scene for a cloth simulation render of the ribbon being shot from that starting state, and rhino Gangle wasn't even rigged. Again, still in very good hobby project tier. But still hobby project.

...That said, the quality floor has plummeted to well below that even in blockbusters with the VFX contractor race to the bottom and the shuttering of in-house VFX departments, so I guess 'very good hobby project' is on the higher end these days. Still... in terms of the money Glitch should in theory be making, going further with quality (at thensame release cadence) should be easily affordable.

It kinda makes me wonder if the problem is they've got no big projects in the longer term, and the independent miniseries they've taken now are projects too small to justify expanding without something big coming down the pipe (and only 4 remaining episodes of their cash cow).

I don't remember how many exactly but I know they went from around 60 or so animators and general production people to like 80? that worked on Murder Drones and tadc. And they recently hired ZAnimation to help them out on all their promotional stuff including teasers, advertising and commercials (like the Japanese ones). I think they're trying but tadc got too big too fast and they have Gaslight District and Knights and Guinevere all being worked on by those same 80 people and it's maybe too much for them. 80 people is probably not enough for 3 concurrent projects like that, no. There's a reason you want to produce episodes of one series concurrently rather than episodes of multiple for staggered release. A lot of reasons, actually. Reuse of assets is the obvious one, but it's also important to minimize the amount of switching between projects a given person is doing - you have a likely short but still very present reorientation time loss every time you do that. It's something bad project management both creates and can't adapt to.

So if the project management is being done somewhat competently... there are probably about 30-40 people on TADC, since it's the cash cow. I still view this in the lens of turnaround time - it still seems rather haphazard and noticeably corner-cutting for that number of people in that amount of time.

In fairness, character design like that doesn't lend itself well to being effectively a painted layer on top of a regular skeleton. What you really want is genuinely articulating the ribbon and THEN getting it to act like a body with custom kinematics - it requires a skillset and understanding of underlying theory and math that a hobby project may not have access to. The other designs aren't as hard to rig well, though Caine REALLY pushes the deformation limits of his teeth polygons sometimes.

The tipoff that the rhino likely wasn't rigged is how weirdly still she is in the shot before she was shot (heh). The blink was probably a compromise to give the illusion of life without having to rig and animate rhino Gangle, and she was likely completely silent about getting frozen in place, shot, and bitten to avoid needing to animate the mouth and eyes. That scene really stuck out to me in terms of quality tradeoffs - her silence was jarring.

It's basically just tying the geometry to a simple humanoid skeleton and treating her like she has a solid mass - the ribbon is less like a floating ribbon and more like a wrapping over an invisible body. The only times she's animated like a ribbon are the occasional arm closeup and when she gets pulled somewhere and unravels.

These are all kludges to avoid having to animate an actual ribbon, which you could still make behave like a body for stuff like walk cycles (Gangle's walk cycle is also kinda bad sometimes - her legs and feet can get weirdly mechanical in some shots) with custom kinematics (which would basically be the extra rigging details to tell the animation anchors (i.e. bones) to move together like a humanoid body between keyframes despite not being connected that way). Doing it that way gives more freedom to express with the character without being limited by what the basic rigging skeleton of a humanoid can articulate.

TL; DR: Basically, it's why her ribbons have that 'stuck together in invisible gel' look despite that all being empty space. That look is what happens when the rig doesn't have enough joints for the model's visible geometry.

At a simplified end viewer level, the rigging kludge being used also prevents stuff like the ribbon reacting realistically to wind or momentum physics without a whole new rig or manually messing with the bones frame by frame (or running a bespoke cloth simulation). The point of custom kinematics is so that you don't have to do all that manually, you bake it into the model's kinematic math (basically the math of joint movements - the program is doing the trig for you, at least) so it still works in a way animators can use like a humanoid skeleton without manual frame-by-frame headaches, but with more visual tools at their disposal and a more realistic reaction to those humanoid movements.
