I know that they're supposed to be on /fa/ as per https://rbt.asia/g/thread/66587656/#66588005 yet they're still getting made on /g/ by determined posters and perhaps posters who do not know that these threads are now supposed to be on /fa/. Is there a possibility of using the spam filter to automatically warn people with a custom message that /wt/ belongs on /fa/? The subject is always "/wt/ Watch Thread" and the OP text is usually "This is the thread about the technology of watches and timekeeping devices"

So I know that Captions and Literature threads on /d/ have been disallowed for quite some time now, as announced by this sticky: https://desuarchive.org/d/thread/7509079. Many users aren't aware of these rules, though, and post the content anyway, unknowing that it has been banned. This usually leads to it getting reported by the more experienced users, and maybe a little fighting between the more experienced users of the board and the newer people, who insist that the content is allowed because the rules don't say anything about them.

So why don't we add a rule to /d/, explaining that Fiction, Captions, and "Censorship Captions" aren't allowed? I think it would help to keep a lot of this content off /d/, and on its appropriate boards. I see a lot of content on /d/ that violates the rules or goes into a grey area, but a lot of stuff (especially western art by certain artists) never get reported, because a lot of people are just used to posting it on /d/ instead of /aco/ or /trash/.

Currently vr is suffering from a massive brain drain. In it's years of existence, every topic has been explored, every anon has been called a faggot for liking the music in obscure JP only computer games and every console had been repaired using 3rd world country tier settings. There are no topics left for us to discuss and as a direct result of this, vr is in a downward spiral of shitposting. The typical vr anon is there because he sees himself as roughing it or is like me, the shit they call retro now is the shit I grew up with. In the years of vr we've enjoyed, we've had some truly great discussion without WE WUZ KANGZ memes that v deals primarily with. It is my opinion, however, that the massive wave of shitposting we have been existing in currently is a direct result of a lack of several things. New people, new ideas and new topics. I considered at length today if 2000 or 2001 would be a better goal post for the board and I can honestly say that at this point, vr serves essentially no purpose if we do not give it life. We have tilled it's soil and enjoyed many summers of fruit, but we have done so at the cost of quality.

Here is the typical morning for a vr janitor. Remove 'I can't believe you thought THIS was better than Genesis.' Browse board to remove the copy / pasted version of this thread for SNES, TurboGrafx, PC Standard / DOS and any other iterations of this thread. Anon wants to post, he wants to post on vr, but because he has discussed in detail sprite transparency, disk drive rot, button input lag and CRT refresh rates so such a degree, he would rather shitpost then have those spirited arguments for the 600th time. Having the metric of 1999 being the hardline for retro was fine for years because there was always more stuff to discuss, but vr is in the dark ages and has not had a golden era in a very long time.

This is probably a discussion that needs to happen.

Some boards call them CYOAs, some call them quests.

For purposes of being on the same page, I'm going to define "quest thread" or, simply "quests" as threads that have the OP act as the author of a collaborative story where the next action of the protagonist is decided by crowd participation.
-Threads can be stand-alone, or continuous. A quest can begin and end in one evening, or take place over weeks or months, with a new thread picking up where the last thread left off.
-They should include creation of original content: text-only narrative, and/or the creation of new images as the story advances.
-The next action can be decided in various ways at the whims of the Quest Master (QM), but usually involves at least one of: voting from pre-selected choices (A, B, C...); write-in choices ("what say?"); discussion and consensus between participants; or rolling dice: either to determine which option is selected or, more commonly, to determine how effective actions are.

Quests are structured very much like tabletop roleplaying games: they have a person (OP, QM) running the thread, with participants deciding on what their character should do. It's a little bit different from most tabletop games in that the player character is played by many people at once, instead of each player playing his or her own character. There's a tabletop game called "Everyone is John" that uses this principle. Naturally, quest threads would fit most topically on /tg/.

Most QMs use a tripcode, but only for the purposes of running the quest, just like God intended. Only /tg/ has the dice-rolling function, but fast-moving boards (/v/ and /b/) use the last two digits of a post to decide the roll result. Many quests are text-only, but some do have artists drawing for each update. There are other sites (Anonkun, Questionablequesting, etc) that use different discussion software to facilitate quests.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not asking to be able to ban people or anything drastic like that. But I think that giving janitors a couple more tools would make life much easier for both janitors and mods.

First off, I'd like to be able to issue warnings.

You can often see heated discussions that start to veer off topic and start shitting up a thread. In those situations, it would be helpful if I could issue warnings to people participating in it to try to calm them down and to get them to drop the issue. I know I can request warnings, but mods can't be expected to respond to those instantly, so the thread will keep getting shat up in the meantime. And I don't really feel like issues like these are worth bugging mods for their attention on the IRC.

It's possible to try to get people to drop the issue by deleting their conversation, but it's likely that they'll miss it and won't notice the mass deletion. Or they might notice it but keep arguing anyways. By giving them warnings you're sending them a direct message, so they're more likely to pay attention to it.

I know I can give them a time out by requesting a ban, but I often don't feel like those posts are worth banning people for, and it just wastes mods' time by sending them requests over trivial things. And by giving janitors the ability to issue warnings, it eases up the mod workload as they no longer need to process warning requests from janitors.

And while on the subject, I would like it if it was possible to issue a warning without deleting the post the warning was issued for. I'm not asking for the ability to give out public warnings or anything like that, but sometimes it feels like it would do more harm than good to delete a post, but the person making that post is still making a low quality contribution and should be warned about it.

Give people the benefit of the doubt; a creative thread might look off-topic at first glance.

People are allowed to argue; they are not allowed to *troll*.

Not everything that gets reported needs to be deleted or banned; don't hesitate to use the clear button if no rule is broken.

Janitors cannot readily tell if an anonymous poster is ban evading. Ask a mod to check, or BR for something else. Help make sure nobody gets banned for 30 days for something they didn't do.

Don't increase bans beyond 3 days for minor things.

Accept appeals for minor things, and be forgiving on /q/ and IRC.

Keep in mind: People come to 4chan to have fun, but their fun should not come at the expense of others.

This is an idea I've been thinking about for a while. I don't know if it's a good idea or not, and I can see why the suggestion could be alarming, but I think it's worth talking about at least.

Whenever all of the janitors on a board are offline, shitposters have free reign to derail threads with roll images and "^- This poster is..." images, and CP tends to stay up longer than it should because it takes 3 illegal reports for anyone else to be able to deal with it. The point has been made that, if you just add an image MD5 to a banlist and prevent people from posting it, they'll change one pixel in Paint and post it anyway, which makes the process of blocking the image in the first place a waste of time.

My suggestion for a workaround would be something which automatically bans these posts after a short time.

Before I continue I just want to make something clear: it would be a big problem if this were to look for post content (like regex-ing "if you don't reply to this post..." which would run the risk of catching good posts which just happened to contain those phrases. In my mind, it wouldn't even be for ban-evaders like Barneyfag who routinely post the same images, because someone else could post those images without being Barneyfag, and the images themselves aren't rule-violating. It would be exclusively for things like roll images or CP, which are, in and of themselves, always rule-violating. After posting images on the auto-ban list, a short timer would run down, and the poster would be banned. It simulates good janitoring and makes sure these posts always get dealt with quickly, without giving the poster any indication that a janitor isn't actually active, or giving them a reason to modify the image in Paint.

This would improve the quality of the boards by quickly getting rid of the big derailing posts which never fail in accumulating hundreds of replies, which human janitors can't hope to do with the same speed and regularity.

Why, as a matter of principle, do we bar users from discussing the quality of threads they're posting in when their threads are going to shit?

I have something that I believe really needs to be addressed, and that's Rule #2 on /toy/
It states: Absolutely no Japanese figurines. Action figures are permitted.
Now I know what it means, and you know what it means, but this one rule seems to cause the 'spergs to go apeshit, and 99 times out of a hundred any thread where a figurine is mentioned or shown (even in the background of a blurry picture), will degrade into a shit flinging mess, with flaming and trolling and people trying to find loopholes as to what exactly makes something a figurine vs a toy.

This should be pretty self evident. If it's marketed and sold as a Japanese figurine, then it's a Japanese figurine, and thereby against the rules. If something is marketed and sold as n action figure, then it's allowed. It's pretty straightforward. There shouldn't be any question as to the difference. If this was a perfect world. But it's not, so we get these kinds of rebuttals:

-Well, what about figurines that have limited articulation? You can pose an arm or turn the head. That makes it an action figure!

-How come Amiibos (Figma FigFX, Skylanders, etc etc) are allowed? They're nothing but statues. why should people get to post about them?

-What about plastic army men. There's no joints on them?

-Gunpla's not a toy, they're model kits, yet they're allowed.

-Why are gashapon toys allowed?

And so forth, ad nauseam.

Could we somehow get a stick from one of the mods, or better yet the admin that basically lays it all out? I know it's juvenile, but were talking about people who will tear each other apart because somebody likes something the other person doesn't.
I honestly feel if there was something concrete to look at, that they can actually see with their ow eyes, they won't have any excuse, and maybe, just maybe this shitstirring topic might go away.

It would also be a great help to mention in the rule itself that Figurines belong in /jp/, as currently it's not mentioned.

Obviously we all "basically" know what a general thread is but I'd like a concrete definition that we can use as a basis for further dicussion.

for some reason hexchat has randomly stopped working for me. anytime I try to connect It says nickname is already in use. this used to happen if i tried logging on at my office when i still had hexchat open at home, but that hasn't been the case for the last week but i still can't get in. not sure whats going on.

Is there a sitewide policy on the mentioning of user-created communities on 4chan, assuming they are not at the moment being aggressively viraled or actively spawning drama? These can include:

- single-purpose communities (wikis, radio streams, download bot real-time chats, multiplayer matchmaking real-time chats)
- project-based communities (real-time chats or dedicated forums for coordinating particular projects)
- topic-based communities (real-time chats, forums, or imageboards for specific series or topics)
- 4chan-substitute communities (imageboards that attempt to serve as substitutes for existing 4chan boards)

Real-time chats usually being either IRC or discord channels. I think that different boards usually handle these in different ways and would like to know what the policy is.

As much as I enjoy ban requesting the same evader twenty times over, it is still kind of dumb that your average poster can dodge bans with impunity.

The existing solution is the range ban, which if applied, may ban hundreds of ordinary 4chan posters and is thus incredibly unsuitable for practical use except in the case of earth-shatteringly abusive behavior, which ruining threads or spamming doesn't quite rise to the level of. Net result: if you want to shit up someone's thread you usually can (barring the full-time assistance of a staff member keeping it off).

The remedy I suggest is a modified range ban - a range ban with a very permissive cookie whitelist system. Basically: post on 4chan, get a whitelisted cookie, valid indefinitely or until you get banned, whichever comes first. If you have any posts at all on 4chan when the curtain comes down you get onto the whitelist for free. The only obvious problem remaining is what to do if you weren't on the whitelist and aren't a banned poster (because you didn't post on 4chan for a week, or because you're new to 4chan, or you bought a new computer/phone, or you cleared your cookies); in that case, you would get a whitelist cookie that becomes active in three hours (or one hour, or 12 hours, or whatever else seems appropriate.)

Net result: ban evaders must wait 1/3/12 hours before evading their bans; non-offending posters will be inconvenienced for 1/3/12 hours every time they buy a new computer / purge their 4chan cookies / visit 4chan for the first time, none of which honestly should happen all that often. (Cookie blacklists are pretty worthless, because people clear cookies or open private sessions or whatever, but whitelists avoid this problem entirely.)

Please offer opinions or objections to this idea. I haven't carefully thought through a technical implementation or server impact, but I could probably come up with something if it's not an obviously awful idea for some reason I've missed.

I've spoken to various mods and janitors and we've hammered out "official guidelines" to address these issues. Here is what would be posted under mod capcode to various threads that require it:

What do the users of the boards that you use the most tend to think about their moderation?

Not that it's related to moderation in any way, but are the software and finances of 4chan on-topic in /j/? Or should we just trust that technical issues being resolved in a separate channel by people who actually have access to the numbers?

What do you think of the bump limits and other parameters on the boards you use? For reference, the current bump limits are 750 on /qst/ and /vg/, 500 on /a/, /co/, /mlp/, /news/, /r9k/, /soc/, /sp/, /v/, and /vr/, and 300/310 on all other boards.

All regular boards (meaning not-/f/, which has 30 threads per page but only one page) have 10 pages and 15 threads per page except /pol/, which has 20. Image limits are 300 on /jp/ and /vip/, 250 on most "fast" boards and 150 on most other boards.

Thoughts / requests / comments?

I've been noticing a lot more politically charged posts in the last few months, even in places where it wouldn't normally foster political speak such as anime and vidya threads. I don't think it will let up for a while, even after the election so I was wondering if there's anything specific in place to address this.

Fellow /gif/ jannies, mods and globals:

Ever since /wsg/ was created, there have remained a number of threads on /gif/ that would be considered SFW, most commonly "You Laugh You Lose" and, more recently "You Groove You Lose" threads. Moderating these has become difficult, in my opinion, due to the lack of warning template for "SFW on Adult /gif/," giving me the impression that posters of these threads aren't getting the message.

Should we take a harder stance against these threads, and try to permanently push them to /wsg/? I know that the template isn't totally necessary, but I think that it would help.

I'd appreciate your thoughts on the matter. Sorry that I don't really know who the /gif/ jannies are, or I'd bring it up with you personally.

Recently (if the last three or four years counts as recent) I've noticed there's a trend in moderation where janitors or moderators will delete new threads for a topic if a thread for that topic already exists.

Could we not do this?

There are a lot of cases in which I think it might be reasonable, for example, if the board is actually being overrun, or somebody is flooding and deliberately trying to start shit, or two copies of a general thread were made within one minute of each other and it was obviously a mistake, but outside of that I really don't think this is something that should be in the remit.

Having a thread dedicated to the board could prove useful, so here it is.

Big issues, regular spam, talk about the generals or anything relevant to it.

Recommendations/corrections about the way it's being janitored are also appreciated.

I've been spending a bit of time hanging out in the /g/ subreddits, particularly /mkg/, /hpg/, /sqt/, and the Desktop Thread. I'm particularly annoyed at the last of those. (Arguments about the generals in /g/ is its own thing.)

Things I've noticed:

1) People rarely talk about ricing. Every fifty posts or so somebody asks for a config file or window manager advice.

2) The posts in the thread are two things: desktop pictures and/or tripfags saying "good morning" and "good night" to each other.

3) Most of the desktops posted are obviously intended just to show off the wallpaper or images on the desktop at the time.

4) The thread is filled with tripfags, a number of them who ban evade frequently, and display a strong sense of entitlement whenever they are banned (especially for evading). Some are borderline avatarfagging with anime pictures.

The conclusions I've made are: the discussions here are *barely* about technology to begin with, and beyond that it has become a haven for evaders. Combine this with the fact that /w/ already has their own Desktop Thread, which is a lot less cancerous and more productive, and I'm wondering what the point of the /g/ version is.

I really think we should do something about the thread, whether it be find a way to ban the evaders better, or just get rid of the threads or move them to /w/.

I'd like there to be some further discussion about the enforcing of rules and policy on /his/.

This isn't to gripe about the board. I've actually been pleasantly surprised at the amount of civil, informative discussion and content shared through the board. However, I think it can still improve. As new events occur, we can all be aware and stay on the same page.

For now, I'd like to talk about the problems from people posting 'Religion' in /his/. Religion (as one of the humanities) is not against the rules to discuss, but I think religion in this context should be emphasized as something to be discussed in an 'academic' setting. What I have been seeing more and more often is extremely low-quality name-calling arguments and behavior. I don't think 'worship' threads or attempts at religious conversion would be considered on-topic, or any of the "peripherally religious-related" threads, which end up as 4chan users using religion as an excuse to shitpost and flame other users.

Very frequently, I would almost say daily, the same few threads get posted on /his/: "Which religion is objectively correct" or "is X religion more degenerate than Y religion?" I have been getting rid of these threads, but because i haven't talked to any mods in depth about the bounds of the policy I'm not sure how far i should be going.

More threads that seem to pop up every day, unrelated to /his/

Another thing I would be interested in hearing clarified is the degree to which political ideologies should be discussed. in other words... i'll be gone all this weekend. If someone could look after /hc/, it really seriously needs it due to a lot of spamming, etc. Thanks :D /s/ seems to be able to fend for itself, so i'm not as worried about it.

There is very frequent cross-board spam which affects most of the NWS boards. This spam advertises child pornography, although the images it attaches don't necessarily contain any. If you janitor a porn board, you probably know how to handle this, but any other janitors might see it in their queue due to it receiving three or more illegal reports.

So I would like to stress to all janitors that if you see this spam, do NOT simply ban request it and forget about it. Instead, whenever you see it, you should notify a moderator in IRC immediately so they can wipe all the posts at once. They can do so either from an active thread, or from your existing ban request. Ping mods until you get a response.

If you do submit a ban request, use the "Child Pornography (Request or Link)" template.

The spam is easily recognizable and looks like what you see in the attached image. It is posted to /e/, /h/, /d/, /u/, /y/, /s/, /hc/, /hm/, and /t/. The posts always come from the same IP so it's easy for a moderator to get rid of them -- just don't BR and move on.

When no reply about changes were forthcoming, I decided to help extend the functionality of 4chan myself, simply because I couldn't stand trying to decipher the squabbling of users any longer from scattered reports.

I have no idea if such an extension already existed, but I treated coding this as a beneficial exercise in learning web dev languages.

We seem to have no /a/ thread, and I feel better when we have an /a/ thread.
So /a/ thread, talk about /a/, ways to improve /a/ so on and so forth.

Let's chat about /cgl/

Right now we seem to have a proliferation of "feels" and green text threads, and they've been spiraling into constant off-topic posting. Most /cgl/ users tend not to report these things, so we have to go looking for them. As of today we have a "Feels" thread and a "Confession" thread which have been around for at least the past year and show no sign of changing (to stay on topic) without some form of consistent moderation; however, there have been quite a few more types of these threads as well. Sometimes, the cringe threads tend to also branch into offtopic shitposting.

Thoughts?

There are a lot of times where I'll see a thread which is a legitimate thread, but is simply on the wrong board. I propose an option to allow moderators and administrators to move a thread to a different board and with such have a warning explaining the action to the OP. Janitors could also have this option, but should the admins want to have more oversight it could have to be approved by a janitor of the board it would be going to or a mod/admin. This would allow people who seek specific information whom are too used to a particular board to branch out to others and as well to realize that board culture isn't an excuse to post whatever you like.
This combined with a board specific ban system would glorious, as it would allow us to condemn the shitposters to /b/.

What is the intended purpose of the QA board?

/gif/ & /wsg/ janitor here. Thought I would make a posting to keep stuff related in.

One thing I would like to clarify, are YLYL threads allowed on /gif/, and if not could we perhaps get a warn template made for this? I'm seeing an increasing number of people report the YLYL threads on /gif/ and then comment on the thread telling them to go to /wsg/.

Mods, could we look into this? Thoughts?

With moot finally giving hiro the keys to the kingdom and /qa/ back up for now, everyone is talking about how all possible boards should be created, deleted, split and merged at once. And one or two other site suggestions too.

So I figured now would be the best time to start up a discussion of how our moderation practices and policies could be improved. I don't know what ideas the mods and other higher-ups have or haven't discussed amongst themselves, so if they've got some input that they can let slip, or if an idea presented here isn't feasible for reasons us janis don't know, that'd be helpful to hear about.

imho, the biggest problem I see is the lack of communication with the community. Rules inevitably leave a lot of room for interpretation, and even when we're trying to enforce them in an unbiased manner, it leaves a lot of questions for the users about why this is allowed or that isn't, why was I banned, why wasn't that other anon. And if nobody else is filling in those blanks for them, they'll fill them in themselves with their own made up reasons and repeat them until they're accepted as fact. To some degree this is inevitable because of the nature of the 4chan community, but I think to a large degree it's preventable if we would just clarify why we took the actions we did.

Obviously, the implication here would be to make more mod/admin posts or stickies when they're necessary to address ongoing issues on the boards as they crop up. Janitors who're more familiar with the board at hand could inform the mods of the general situation and ask the mods if they'd publicly put in a word of clarification.

The two arguments against this that I can think of are 1) that it's just too much work for the mod team, which is understandable but I can't know if that'd be the case, and 2) that mod posts are too disruptive to threads. To that I say, mod posts are usually needed in threads that are already facing disruption, and wouldn't be frequent enough to make a (cont)

Delete button: Thread pruning sometimes requires multiple passes but the Delete button always returns me to page 0. It would be more helpful if the Delete button returned me to the thread I was in.

I'd like to take the time to discuss a meta topic that might require a procedural change in the coming future, namely the continuation of girlfriend sharing threads. These are threads that are made consistently on /hc/ and less often on others like /s/.

Basically, my concern stems from the possibility of these threads being centers for retaliation and doxing, as well as being hubs for revenge porn of underage girls. Most of the time there is no way to validate or investigate the origin of these nude images, and I believe there may be many instances of underage but pubescent girls being posted.

I'm inquiring whether or not porn board janitors should have to run the gambit of letting CP slide because the age of the models are ambiguous. I don't want to say I support a blanket ban on the subject itself, but it seems to me that the very nature of these threads are a honeypot for anonib types spreading nude selfies of classmates and former girlfriends. And especially in the case of /hc/, these threads aren't necessarily on topic, but I've let them slide because contribution is sometimes more important than falling lock-step into the purpose of the board.

Yesterday, I noticed that the janitor tools box with the reports does not follow me to the catalog, only in individual threads and where only the first 10 threads are displayed. The link to /j/ also disappears in the catalog. No settings changed on my end.

Any suggestions?

I monitored the /vg/ archive and was quite disappointed to find many scam, request and begging threads. I just stumbled upon an archived thread that should have been ban requested. Since the thread was archived, the user information was pruned, so there was nothing I could do other than actively delete the thread in question.

Will janitors eventually get the ability to ban request archived posts?

I'm the /o/ janitor, I'll be out of the country between 14 April and 23 April or so, assuming I don't get stuck in Narita waiting for a ride home.

I can repost this closer to the dates in question, if that is more convenient for whoever is concerned with these things.

I'm making this thread to point out one particular troublemaker but if any other /vg/ janitors find some guy doing strange things worth dealing with feel free to post 'em too.

Pic related is a guy known as "copypasta spammer" in /xivg/, the Final Fantasy XIV General. As his name implies, he reposts posts in /xivg/ repeatedly. The reposts come from multiple IPs but given how the general reacts to him he's likely just spamming the general from multiple IPs. Banning is only a momentary relief but hey, that's true with most chronic problems on /vg/.

Just putting that out there as a heads up for why fxi posts in the fxi general are getting BR'd in the first place rather than me just being senile.

Also important to note: If on /vg/ you see a report for a post quoting a large number of posts in /xivg/, its one of their regulars looking to point out the spammer(s). Not saying he's helping appropriately but I think its worth mentioning.

After a small discussion in the IRC, I've realized a few of us have been using BR'S as way to warn someone when no immediate ban is needed. What I mean is, if someone is contributing to a thread with on topic material and shit-posting every so often in between do they really need to be banned? -What if deleting these posts only eggs the poster on, or alludes him to think he/she is immune from the rules? I've seen this very scenario happen a few times and I think I may have found a solution.

If a poster is breaking a rule it results in a BR, which can have them banned for a day or more. Sometimes I feel a post doesn't warrant a ban but does need to be removed. In these instances I delete said post and carry on, however this does often result in, "WHY WAS MY POST DELETED? FUCK YOU JANI/MOD"
Which again, is breaking a rule and starts a shit-show of off topic discussion. I hate having it escalate to that point so in the IRC I brought up the discussion of a warning button, with good feedback. I was instructed to do a write-up here and await results.

I know certain boards like /r9k/ dish out warnings for unoriginal posts and will mute a poster for a certain amount of times, and add time as offenses increase. I was wondering if there would be a way to integrate a lo-fi version of this into our tools.

The first warning could just let the poster know what they are doing is breaking a rule, and give them the benefit of the doubt with no penalty, only escalate from that point forward.

I understand this system could be abused pretty easily, but if we stuck to it like we did the rules I think we'd have a lot less 'culture' drama from certain boards.

Also if this is not feasible or plausible please let me know and I will delete this thread and never bring it up again. (Or a mod can!)
