/fat/ - Fat Loss General
>Who is /fat/ for?
For dieting ducks working towards a longer life and a better physique through meaningful hard-work, strategy, and dedication. This is not QTDDTOT, stick to questions on fat loss. Post height and weight when asking for advice.
Join our Fatty Contest: https://www.fattycontest.com/

>What do I do first?
1. Read https://physiqonomics.com/fat-loss/
2. Calculate your Body Fat Percentage: https://fitness.bizcalcs.com/Calculator.asp?Calc=Body-Fat-Navy
3. Calculate your TDEE: https://www.sailrabbit.com/bmr/
Remember to use bodyfat% and use Katch-McArdle Formula with sedentary settings or your TDEE will be too high.
4. Plan your weight loss: https://www.losertown.org/eats/cal.php
5. Track your nutrition with MyFitnessPal (better for packaged food), Cronometer (better for generic food/macros), LoseIt (great for both), or Waistline (FOSS).

>Now what?
Count calories, all of them.
Eat about 500-1000 less calories than your TDEE.
Buy scales, be accurate.
Learn to cook. Try to stick to lean protein and green vegetables.
Eat a lot of protein. 0.72g per pound of goal lean body mass.
Doing cardio, even just walking, will improve your health. There is no such thing as a healthy fat heart, but you can offset the risks.
Lifting weights will keep and gain muscle mass and lose fat much quicker. Not lifting results in the body eating away muscle AND fat.
Drink more water.
Read the /fit/ sticky: https://liamrosen.com/fitness.html

>DON'T
Eat refined sugars, they're terrible for you regardless of calories.
Eat processed foods.
Drink your calories (alcohol, soda, Starbucks).
Freak out over a weight loss stall. Plateaus can last up to three weeks.
"Reward" yourself. Cheat days cheat only yourself.

Don't sweat it anon, TDEE is a lie anyways. If you are losing weight and the app is consistently inconsistent it doesn't matter at all. A 300 calorie deficit (or whatever number) is a 300 calorie deficit if your TDEE is 1800 calories or 2400 calories.

Time for my daily creatine complaint session.

Day 5. Up 3.2lbs from my low, which is prob closer to 4-4.5lbs given my deficit. Yesterday's increase was only .2lbs so im thinking that I am approaching the end.

That being said, my Sunday workout was the first one where I started feeling an actual improvement. I was able to squeeze out a bit more workload than I typically would.

Others have told me it takes roughly 7 to adjust, so I should be almost done.

idk your body. So I can't help much. Here is the theory for a made up person. Made up person does only things front to back and doesn't bench and reach at angles. Probably an office worker.

Back Squat Muscles worked:
Gluteal muscles
Quadriceps
Hamstrings
Adductors
Calves
Spinal Erectors
Abdominals
Trapezius

His adductors are dogshit. When he tried to do a squat then the balance issue make him work harder despite it not being the target for the exercise. He isn't going to get much for VO2 if the smallest muscle of the group is the one screaming and his quad, ham and ass are just hanging out.

Solutions:
Do isolations
check in on yourself if you can do that (a lot of people can't)
use alternate machines to see if your numbers change, ie smith machine squat for the office worker I described.

im not an exppert but i think you can be skinny fat and still have IR.

in theory if you keep spiking your insulin (sugars / carbs) but your cells are already filled with glycogen, you need more and more insulin to remove sugar from the bloodcells and store it into the cells and liver, thus you get resistant.

on the flip side, if you deplete your glycogen stores in all your muscles, then your body starts pulling it from the liver, when it runs out of glycogen it starts converting the fat in the liver to ATP which cleanses you from fatty liver disease.

i actually had no idea but sugar / glycogen... it's actually pretty fucking toxic in your blood stream, which is not only why your body rushes to get it into cells for energy, but because it actively damages shit if it stays in the blood stream (which is why diabetics lose limbs, their eyes and shit, glycogen is literally damaging cells)

imagine that, sugar/glycogen, absolutely necessary for regular human function; for energy, but it's also toxic to our cells and organs if it stays around in the blood, kinda wild to think about

God I'm really frustrated with myself

I spent my whole life completely directionless. As I kid all I cared about or thought about was playing video games and hanging out with friends and stuff, in high school I graduated to being a stoner and a drunk and smoking weed every day and going to parties and still had no idea what I wanted to do with my life, I actively avoided thinking of it

Then as you can imagine adulthood hit me like a tonne of bricks, and I refused to grow up, just kept on doing what I was doing until eventually my lifestyle destroyed my health and everything went down the drain and I retreated even further from life and went onto an aimless downward spiral just binge eating and drinking and barely working

Now im slowly getting my health back on track and losing the tremendous amount of weight I put on, and just last night I was actually thinking about my future seriously, and just like that I already came up with an idea of what kind of career I would like, FOR THE FORST TIME IN MY LIFE, but at the same time it all feels like it's too late

I'm 31 God damn years old I have to spend a year or more just losing weight , then I would have to go back and get my highschool diploma, them o would have to somehow go to post secondary school for years, then hope to God I can get a job in my field

All I can think is where was this years ago. Why did I have to spend a decade "finding myself" and hitting rock bottom before I understood what kind of person I wanted to be

It's all very frustrating

Not at all. The fact that youre struggling means youre giving it your best effort. Your goal in the gym isnt progressive overload per se, its giving it your best effort. The overload comes as a by product of that. You did what you needed, now rest. FWIW today I backslide a bit on my bench press, but then I hit a 45 pound plate on my weighted dips right after. If I got demoralized after bench I wouldnt have even tried. Also I personally would avoid muscle specific deloads since you want to bring your over cns fatigue down too. Just deload for a session or a week if youve been going hard for a month or more. The gains wont go away. Quite the opposite.

I always put on 2 10lb weights on the barbell, do a set of 5 reps, then get too tired to do it again. I have to take the weights off and finish my remaining sets with just the bar. Any thread with "fat" in the comment field gets picked up. Not just the subject line. You can also always check the "Current Threads" list on fattycontest to see which threads the script is actively watching, so that's not something you should really worry about.

So the issue is less that you should be worried about if the script is picking it up, so long as they copy and pasted the body it should pick it up fine, and more that if you make a thread and forget the subject line the thread becomes a little harder to find. That thread was particularly bad because it bundled a completely irrelevant meme as the OP with a missing subject line. So both a cursory glance at the catalogue and a search for "fat loss general" wouldn't pick it up, hence how we ended up with two threads again. This used to be more of an issues and the nunfag has actually helped with this as you can usually just look for the nuns and they stick out in the catalogue with their bright colors, you don't even need to type "fat loss" into the search to find it most of the time, its usually on the first few pages and its the only thumbnail that looks like that.

Depends on your settings. If you measure your deficit over some time, it should roughly line up with weight loss, if it doesn't you need to adjust something.

BMR (purple) is an estimation calculated by your bio info so make sure that's all accurate and probably set your activity level (blue) low if you're logging all of your exercise. You can also turn on TEF (dark orange) if you're logging food correctly.

The least accurate part of that is likely going to be exercise (orange) section. 30 minutes of "hard cycling" might describe a completely different level of effort (and calories burned) depending on the person or the bike or the terrain. In that case, you'd want to adjust the effort level or maybe even the time for your entry to more accurately reflect how many calories you're actually burning.

DEXA scan is the gold standard for body fat percentage. Its the most accurate way to measure bodyfat. Downside is you need to have access to a DEXA scanner and they usually aren't cheap, and you're giving yourself a small X-Ray dose every time you get scanned. Not something you should be doing weekly to track progress, more like maybe once every 6 months.

After DEXA is the caliper method, upside is its cheap, calipers cost next to nothing, doesn't expose you to anything harmful, and can be done at home. Downside is you'll need someone else to measure some of the points like your back, so hopefully you've got someone around you to help you with that, and pinching your skin to get a good reading can be a little uncomfortable. And the accuracy is kinda dependent on the person taking the readings, if they're a retard you'll get retarded results.

Next down is just looking at pictures and guessing. Which tends to be better than even navy method. 30+%, 25%, 20%, 15%, 10% all look pretty distinct and most of the time we're just trying to ballpark our bodyfat% anyway. If you look like you're 30% you're probably roughly 30%, if you look like you're either 30% or 25% you're probably somewhere between. Its not foolproof but for most fatties its all you need.

Next down is navy method, you measure your waist and neck throw it in a calculator and it gives you a number. This number is usually in the correct ballpark, but if you've got an unusual anatomy it can be thrown off pretty easy (thick neck, thin waist, or vice versa).

Next down are any of the various impedance scales, handheld/smartscale/smart watches, they're overpriced bullshit and give a reading that isn't even remotely accurate. Don't trust these at all, waste of time and money.

The pain of rebirth is real. You’re burning away the last remnants of your past life you held on to for so long and it’s kind of like losing yourself, and believe me no one said that would be painless would they. Yeah it’s going to take a while to do those things you said, but you forget there will be plenty of good and novel moments along the way you’ll discover that you never even knew existed. Like before taking up running I didn’t know it was possible when running like ~45 minutes straight or so to achieve a kind of bodily high without drugs, it feels like every cell in your body is harmonizing in motion to propel yourself forward, and afterwards you feel inured from pain for like 2 hours or so. If I were to start fasting again id probably make snake juice and try that. Ive been on OMAD since my lifts were regressing when I was fasting. Though I guess OMAD technically counts as fasting, I dont really consider it the same thing.

Trying to lose 6 pounds in 2 weeks but only have a BMR of 1700 because I'm in my 30s.

I eat 1500 cals, I have to burn 1300 cals on top of my BMR.

Now I usually get close, the last 2 weeks I lost 5 pounds, but thats still a bit short.

Thinking of doing 2 hours of 3mpg incline walking(12%) at the gym, I also walk about 10k steps to the gym and back. Think this is enough to push me into a TDEE of 3000?

One thing I started doing is that I'll buy unflavored skyr, mix in fruit instead. Or even buy one tub of unflavored and one tub of flavored and MIX those to half the sugar.

I do the same with protein powder. I have a flavored pack and an unflavored pack and I mix those.

It's funny because all the unflavored things have better stats. My unflavored protein powder and less calories and more protein than the flavored, and when you mix them you dont even notice.

So I was cutting for 4 months. Went from 95kg to 87ish. 174cm so manlet material. I gym 4x a week with 8k steps minimum as cardio. I'm on kinda the muscular side but the links from the sticky calculate my TDEE as 2180 calories which I eat 2k cals a day. Haven't been losing proper weight for a month now and I'm fucking confused and tired. Surely lost some belly fat and generally getting lean but 9kgs in 4 months is not what I was hoping for. No way that my actual TDEE is 2180 cals and I'm only on 180cals deficit right? I should be losing a kg by the week but fuck all has been changing. It's been so long and tiring I'm getting crazy.

shouldn't have waited a whole month, you should be weighting yourself every morning, making a week average and if you didn't lose weight that week, that means you need to eat less
also, if you are going to the gym, you NEED to include a waist measurement (around the belly button so you measure the same place). Otherwise you won't be able to differentiate between muscle and fat weight

Yes, I'm afraid it is like that. Remember also that your TDEE goes down as you lose weight. If you keep the same intake you'll reach equilibrium sooner or later. Which apparently you have done now, unless it's just a longish plateau. That can happen.

That's my biggest problem

I told AI how much I binged yesterday and thats what it said:

This is a significant amount of food for one sitting. While calorie needs vary greatly based on age, sex, height, weight, and activity level, 2500+ calories is often close to an entire day's maintenance for many adults, or even a surplus.

What to do now:

Don't panic. One meal doesn't define your health or progress.

Hydrate: Drink plenty of water.

Gentle Movement: A light walk can aid digestion, but don't try to "burn it off" intensely.

Listen to your body: You likely feel very full. Honor that feeling and don't eat again until you're genuinely hungry.

Resume Normal Habits: Get back to your usual eating pattern at your next meal or the next day. No need for drastic restriction.

Reflect (Optional): Consider what led to eating this volume. Were you very hungry? Stressed? Distracted? This can help with future mindful eating.

Sometimes even eating above maintenance and gaining weight. What’s the trick, brothers?
