Everyday is a monday. Everyday I get up and grind. Everyday I take it up the ass. Everyday I don't mind.
LET'S GET READY FOR ANOTHER DAY OF NOTHIIIIIIIIIIIIING
Gonna apply for some low-paying helldesk job where I get to reset boomers' passwords all day. Worst part is that it's just around the corner from where I did my (SWE) internship. Same shitty hour-long commute for at least 5k less...
Several anons claimed they applied to over 500 jobs in a previous thread. I offered to review resumes, and only 1 (one) anon sent me theirs, and didn't confirm whether they got my feedback or not.
This speaks volumes.
Why aren't (You) developing and maintaining a (potentially) widely used library or framework? Stop doing shitty side projects and mobile apps, no one cares.
Got prescreen in a couple hours.
At least the 8th time I've "interviewed" with this company. Always the same format.
>15 minute call
>Hi I'm Stacy from BallzDeep69 recruitment
>Tell me about your background
>What are you looking for in next role
>I have XYZ position, can I submit your resume?
>Okay, I will have you on a call with the hiring manager by next week
>2 weeks later
>Nothing
>Email
>Nothing
>Call
>Nothing
>Few months later
>Get call
>Hi I'm Stacy from BallzDeep69...
>Rinse and repeat
Obvious humiliation ritual but I'm so out of options at this point I have no choice but to partake
>>105562194Im making the changes you mention rn actually!!!!!
Sorry I didn't respond, I got sidetracked.
>>105562251I'm glad my email reached you.
You know, when I cheer for the underdogs of utwg, and the robots of r9k, I usually feel validated. I've crawled out of some dark dirty depressing holes with the help of others, yes, but largely from helping myself because of 120 weeks I was battling alone. That feeling of being validated in helping others wanes can wane when I don't see similar effort from the other underdogs of society. When that happens, I consider withdrawing my efforts to help them up. Maybe there is a God and he helps me forgive and be patient, I don't know, maybe we're all just bubbles floating in a universe, I don't know
>>105562489120 hour weeks
mindlessly spamming apps on random sites seems like a waste of time
>>105562501What alternatives do you have
>>105562239Update:
Stacey ghosted me, this is actually a first for BallzDeep69 Recruitment believe it or not
>>105562843What do you mean?
Either way, good or bad, cheers anon! It's coffee time. Happy Wednesday.
Well, I'm glad I can finally join you. I've quit my job today.
I never gave a fuck about "making it". I don't want a big house, an expensive car, I'm not going to have a wife or kids and I don't have expensive hobbies. Why should I keep wasting 40h of my life a week on this shit?
This is pretty much what I told my manager. I just don't care anymore. I got a cheap house in a rural area last month and I'll be teaching the basics of computers to elders and helping at the local library a couple of hours a week. I'm going to spend my free time fishing, reading and gardening.
Fuck computers.
>get an interview
>call them unprofessional assholes for being 15min late
fucking autism
>>105562993Wow, liberation day.
What did your manager say to that? Did he appear envious?
How many months of no income can you afford right now based on your expenses?

>>105563016He seemed surprised. Probably thought I lost it to some degree but I exposed it in a very calm and clear way. Also spent the last month documenting and fixing shit and interviewing people. I may not care about this but I'm autistic enough to like things done right.
After buying the house and everything I thought necessary I have 50k left, but I have no debts and no mortgage. I have some land and the river is two minutes walking away, could probably set some traps for birds too. Got solar panels, batteries and all the schizo/prep shit I could think about. Pretty sure I can live on 200-300 bucks a month comfortably.
>>105563102With expenses that low, I hardly need to wish you luck, but all the best my dude. Seems like a very special life switch-up for you.
It's good you took care of the bridges on your way out. Perhaps in the future you can use them again, if needed. I was not so calm and collected when I departed 5 years ago, but it's hardly relevant today.
Unemployment is remarkable. Keep busy learning, and stay positive.
can unemployable * workers post here too?
>>105562993What if you meet a cute shy and a little retarded girl who will be fond of you? Maybe try to start some small 1 man business to not stay completely away from the market
Bad news frog, YC rejected us and we're still waiting on the business app to go through. We hope we can at leasr have thr company registered by mid-july. We're moving forward in one VC's process in September, but might be able to get soft funds faster than that.
>>105563222Thank you anon. I plan to get really invested in writing, but not sure if I'd like to turn that into a job because I stopped enjoying programming as soon as I did it for a living.
>>105563321I'm trying to stay away from worries and headaches as much as I can. A woman living with me is a big no.
>>105563366why would you post this here? unless you plan on hiring from this general
>>105563390>I'm trying to stay away from worries and headaches as much as I can.Eh, I thought so too until I have met my girlfriend, she is indeed a pain sometimes but her love and caring attitude rewards it, I admire your effort for staying in touch with local community as well
>>105563560A while ago I posted that I decided to build a startup. Some /utwg/ frog wanted to br considered for a job. At the time I applied for YC to speed up getting started, setting up the company is crazy slow (been waiting 2 months so far and it can take up to 6). So now he'll have to wait a bit longer before we can do this.
On the bright side the PoC performs bettee than expected so far.

I'm graduating and I already hate indians. All my White project partners were great. Maybe half of the East/Southeast Asians were good. The Mexicans were usually good. The 1 black guy sucked balls. All 3 indians were dogshit. First one didn't contribute anything for a quarter-long project. Second one was leaving negative peer reviews before the project even started, killing morale. Even when I'd see people work well for hours, he'd give a bad review. Last one only made a couple pushes and kept leaving emojis in the comments (dead giveaway for ChatGPT plagiarism).
Officially unemployed for over a month now
Longest for me so far
Two extremely promising positions ended up getting declined after the final interview. This was 3 weeks ago. Got nothing since. Recruiter messages grinded down to basically nothing.
I don't feel good.
>>105564880Only thing I will add to this is that actual Africans, like from Nigeria, are usually based. Every tall Nigerian at my company are smart and polite. But otherwise, yeah, you're spot on.
>>105562993You're awesome, friend. Quitting, rural area, house. I am very jelly rn
>>105563102I also think it's cool how you still did good work even near the end. Part of me wants to phone things in, but some aspects of my work I am proud of, and find myself doing good work just because it's got my name on it, and I want it to be good.
>>105563390>I plan to get really invested in writingOh, goodness, you really are living my fantasy. I've been trying to get good at writing fiction, but find it difficult to muster the energy after a day of working for Rakesh and Ameripeet. I've considered cold quitting and focusing on writing and working out hardcore.
>>105563390Oh, one more thing: how is your health insurance situation? That's the big thing that scares me about not having employment: either I don't have insurance and get a trillion dollar bill for some injury, or I pay out of pocket for insurance, and now my savings are draining extra fast

no wonder newgrads can't find work. they're probably dumber than this guy
I have been getting absolutely ZERO responses from job applications lately. Earlier in the year, if I didn't get an interview I'd at least get a rejection letter saying that they've chosen someone else or the position has been cancelled. I know that the middle of the year is slower for hirings, but what gives?
>>105565572What was the point of this comment?
>>105562194I haven't applied to that many but I'm very aware my resume's shit. From a thread yesterday
>actually got a call from a recruiter for something I applied to last night>he said my resume looked dated and he wanted an updated version (might've just wanted to be nice and help a guy out, might've thought I uploaded the wrong thing) >resume's 1 page, summary, education, technical skills, 4 of my recent projects that I can reasonably talk about>break the news that that's everything, haven't had a job in 10 years>he says to put that on the resume alongside the fact I'm looking to get into it, that that'll have better results than what I currently haveHe also said I should update my tech stack because while it does show some ability it's a bit dated, he suggested React.
>>105562194Yes, it shows that all but one anon are smart and will not send pajeet information that could be used to doxx them or to get their information sold in recruiter grifts.
>>105568308Recruiters don't know shit. You're terminally screwed. You could apply to 99999 jobs and still get nothing. Your resume isn't getting anywhere near a human with a gap, let alone a gap where you admit doing nothing. Everyone and their mom knows react, it would reduce your chances to have it (now you're no longer competing with losers, but with 99% of all devs, almost none of which have gaps)
>>105562194>only 1 anon offered to dox themselves to youThis speaks volumes (about your arrogant self important ass)
>>105568412It's their job to know if someone's hireable or not. If someone with more experience than me goes out of their way to tell me that something will up my chances then I'm listening. He could've just as easily ghosted me or sent a bog standard rejection email.
And what you're also forgetting is with React it adds another section of jobs I can reasonably apply to, an in demand section at that (more than I can say for Java). While it might not end up resulting in anything it'd at least open a potential window.
I love unemployed life so much, bros. I hope it never ends.
>>105563562>I admire your effort for staying in touch with local community as wellThanks, I've always been an ol' geezer at heart, so I think I'll fit well.
>>105565638>but some aspects of my work I am proud ofThat's great anon, I never felt any kind of pride about my job and didn't care about the product I was building, and when I stopped caring about the mony that became a big issue.
>>105565655I started doing it at the weekends and after work, but eventually I realized I needed true calm to focus on this.
>>105565709I live in Spain, healthcare is free.
>>105568603I need money, I want to stop being a useless piece of shit. I think I'll be going for a regular job at the end of the month if I'm still getting nowhere, it's time to start supporting mum instead of the other way around.
>>105568640>I need moneyMove to a first world country and get NEETbux.
>I want to stop being a useless piece of shitFind a hobby. You can be "useful" without selling away your limited time to make some rich asshole even richer.
>>105568651I'm from a first world country, you only get neetbux here if you're disabled or are actively applying (and the amount you get is a fucking pittance, 1/3 the amount needed to cover rent).
>>105568668>actively applyingSame, but not getting a job is not so hard in this market.
>1/3 the amount needed to cover rentGrim. Sorry then, Anon. Unless you have the option to move to a smaller flat or cheaper area.
>>105568668actively applying is easy since there's so many ghost jobs / competition.
I am making money from cenno since I live such a cheap lifestyle
>>105568783>cennoAus?
Fuckin how? It's $600-700 a fortnight and rent is $500 a week anywhere within an hour of a city with tech work.
>>105560300 (OP)Is it better to look for jobs in small or larger cities? I feel like large cities have way more opportunities but are probably way more competitive.
>>105568505no, it really isn't and no, they have no experience. I, and others in these threads, who have, you know, successfully gotten jobs, are a billion times more qualified to say this for obvious reasons. Bonus points to people like me who participated in hiring.
>>105569075Bitch you aren't even giving advice you're just saying give up.
>>105568954I get $930 a fortnight.
I thought it was $800 base without rent assistance
I pay $210/week to rent within an hour of Sydney and Parramatta CBDs. I live with a roommate in a 2bdr near housos. ($420/week total)
I quick apply to 20 jobs / month which is pretty easy. And better yet since the market is so fucked I may be fortunate enough for a short phone screen interview for 10 minutes before I get rejected and that cuts down the jobs needed to apply for by 5.
>>105569105Not my fault if that's how the market is. Your alternative is to pretend you were running a business or freelancing. Or build a time machine and go back to 2022.
In theory there is one more way: get into a non-tech role and connect with the tech team so you can get a tey out 2-4 years in. But this is a very unlikely possibility.
>>105569123Every number I've seen is <$700 unless you have kids.
>>105560300 (OP)ITT people not qualified enough to work in tech ( e.g. people without versatile experience or portfolios that show you're qualified to contribute to something a company needs to get done ), or people working in tech gatekeeping by posting propaganda that getting a job in tech is hard.
Getting a job is tech is insanely easy. Bunch of glowies and kikes here.
>>105569137No I get the market is total aids I'm just saying I'd rather increase my chances as much as possible. It's not like I'm untrained I just haven't worked in the industry so it isn't outright impossible.
I wouldn't trust trying to work myself in after 2-4 years anyway, for all I know we'll have intern-level LLMs by that point.
>>105569194Like I said, you'll have much better mileage claiming niche experience than fucking react experience.

>>105568651i used to be on neetbucks, the amount is too low to live in dignity.
now i do freelance work where i charge so much that i only need to work a few hours a week.
>>105569242Yes, but the amount of applicants is significantly reduced which means you can win by sheer luck. You're now 1/10k instead of 1/100m
>>105569464Fake and gay. Freelance above minimum wage hasn't been a thing since 2015.
>>105569504The amount isn't reduced to 0 and those applicants are all highly skilled.
To be clear I don't live in America so the numbers aren't quite that bad, but it's scaled down. For reference on the site I'm using the most applicants I've seen on a job is about 550, lowest is about 250, (off-site numbers aren't listed) and there are maybe ~30 per business day (most being senior+ roles because for some reason we can't filter by experience requirements in current year+10, and many being out of my skillset).
>Boomer dad gives me the "Smile and be polite" advice >Boomer dad thinks companies give interview feedback >Boomer dad thinks interviews are still conducted in person Surprisingly, he hasn't given me the "firm handshake and be confident" advice
>>105561222Isn't helpdesk all outsourced to India now?
>>105562993holy based
>>105568603I've been unemployed for a bit over a year and from the first few weeks people have been telling me I'm going to get bored. At first I was scared those people would be right, but now I assume they're all mentally ill. This is great. Aside from the lack of money thing. I need a job.
>nooooooooooooo what do you mean you're happy not going through rush hour traffic twice a day five days a week to do abstract, poorly defined work in a colorless office that's too bright and always either too hot or too cold Okay time to go back to preparing for interviews I'm going to bomb.
>>105569634Yes. I'm saying that the odds will be ridiculous eitherway, but in one scenario there is a chance that some shitty shop has some weird hiring ideas and will let anon get an interview or even a job. Very unlikely but 1000x more likely than in the other poaition, where the untalent density is so high that even a stealth startup grts 200 indians emailing the ceo at their private email before the company even has a website up

That said, I'm not a big "learn a trade" guy so make of that what you will.
Tech businesses can work but they're usually less tech and more business/marketing.
What you could do is go to a job board and just scroll to see what shit's available, just to get a general gist of what's out there (usually those sites have a "list in demand/high paying careers" section).

Been grinding pretty hard for the past 3ish weeks to finally get a formal job title locked down in the not-too-distant future, sent out tons of letters and whatnot. So far these regulatory people have been playing hot potato with my case and keep passing me around like same, but none except one cunt has denied me directly so far. Just need to find one that's a bit more lenient when it comes to interpreting the requirements, that's the name of the game for now.
Note that i do not intend on actually working myself to death (if i'll even take up work at all rather than collecting NEETbux) after getting this job title bagged, it's not like the field pays much of anything or has truly decent career options to begin with
... But it's something i could genuinely be proud of doing professionally or just do on the side whenever i feel like it, so what the hell really.
This kind of professional fulfillment is one of the few things that's actually been missing for a very long time in my life (basically ever since i've turned 18) due to the very nontraditional path i've taken in general - Largely owing to factors way the heck outside of my direct control, but also because i had no one to show me the ropes/the people who were supposed to do so failed me quite miserably at every single turn.
I've always felt a good amount of shame from the lack of any formal vocational qualifications, acing this title however would do away with it for good. Thank you for attending my TED talk

Now I've enrolled to get a full CS/SE bachelor's degree at a decent university but I know that won't be enough even if I take full advantage of the career and internship programs there.
The thing is, when I was getting my associate's, they had me take a bunch of classes that offer certification for other computer-related things like networking, cybersec, cloud, etc. that I never bothered with because I wanted to be a cooder.
So what I want to ask is, what are the employment prospects for such tech certificates? Cisco and the like. Would I be better ditching programming altogether and just going for networking or is the job market for that fucked as well?
>>105575066update, i did it and they ask these retardedly vague questions as expected

Doing projects and leetcode feels like a complete waste of time too when I have 0 years of experience in software and a 2023 degree
>>105586454>>105586501Things are very dire for you. The market has become one where only the cream of the crop get by. I'd say get any job at all for some kind of experience until things hopefully recover.
>>105586594I should have went to law school...
>>105573263I used to be a SWE at a startup. The office had free coffee and I got my work done by wednesday and through testing by thursday, sprint planning by 2pm friday and on to the weekend. now I hold a stop/slow paddle at a construction site. recruiters are scum
>>105586501what does your resume look like? maybe try following this guide if you haven't already
https://old.reddit.com/r/EngineeringResumes/wiki/index
>>105586651For the most part I was already following that. The only difference was I had some things in bold, like dates of employment and enrollment or uni name and internship company. My alumni career services team said that the section order for new grads should be summary>skills>certs>education>experience. That order is almost a complete 180 from the guide you sent (and what i was using previously before meeting with them).
>>105586643I can't imagine any field is doing very well right now.
>>105586594>The market has become one where only the cream of the crop get by.What's with this cope lol? They're hiring indians en masse and you'll never be as cheap as them. If you can't get in with nepotism, stop dreaming just forget about it.
>>105586853interesting, sorry to hear that then. i'm surprised your career services team put certs over education, surely a degree is worth more than a comptia/aws cert that'll expire in 3 years anyway right?
personally i'd go education > skills > experience (your internship) > projects > certs.
as for a summary, i only include one if it's a normie non tech company (banks, insurance etc) or if i want to highlight specific experience/skills that aren't immediately obvious otherwise (ex: a few years of hobbyist experience with some of their stack)
>>105586879I don't want to nepotism-max. It feels like cheating. I probably could if I tried hard enough but I hate asking for help. It's basically admitting that you're a bitch and can't do it yourself.
>>105586879Anti-Indian sentiments have been increasing at an alarming rate and we're going to see what effects their hiring will have on products coming. It might not last.
>>105586313are you retarded he said he was FINISHING his 3rd year dumbass
i truly wouldn't be surprised if within the next 5 years we get some megalomaniac zoomer from a suburban college-educated background who does some kind of mass act of violence due to being unable to land jobs in this job market
>>105586879>>105586926the fuck are you on about nepomaxxing is good and if you're in a position where you can nepomax or if nepomaxxing = the best option, do it by all means, unless your family is super fucked up or something
>>105578721hey anon, just wanted to say keep going
you seem like a decent dude, you shouldn't be ashamed of anything and your attitude towards work and life is all good

>>105586501One of my friends has a sibling who did IT and is 1 whole year after graduation. I've been told the sibling couldn't do much technically and lacked quite a bit on the experience side, and now just sits at home with an IT help desk job and is trying to get promoted, which... tough shot if they've forgotten everything they've learned in college about IT.
>>105588078>tough shot if they've forgotten everything they've learned in college about IT.gotta be hard considering college teaches you jack shit in the first place

>>105587798>t. workaholic overachiever with a PhDLiterally me. Also 4 years of exp including FAGMAN. Can't find a job in my specialization, haven't been able to find a postdoc since I got the degree and I'm a few months away from forever be banned from postdocs (so my entire acadeic career is over). Even if I miracled into a postdoc I wouls be too close to the end window to apply to faculty positions and wouldn't be able to get the now mandatory 6 years of postdoc exp, so I would still be doomed.
Industry research hasn't been a thing in ages and I don't get answers even to things precisely in my PhD topic where I am far more experienced than they ask.
As doe other industry jobs I've been laid off 1 month after a promotion with a fat raise and can't find anything.
>>105588723The military wants computer nerds too.
>>105589510they don't accept people with certified mental issues. It's why I never got my doctors' asperger's diagnostic actually written down
>>105589567I don't think aspergers qualifies as a mental issue. If you're autistically good at something and follow orders they'll probably take you. They've been lowering enlistment standards constantly over the past years too.
>>105589590If it's certified it counts. If it's not certified it's OK. That was my point.
What the hell is IT Analyst? Is this a good position?
>>105588723Sort of same, I just have more physical disabilities that would prevent me from going. Not that I'd want to though. I don't want to go through boot camp and all that shit if I'm just suppose to be someone behind a computer anyway.
>>105589671That job title is a "you do whatever the hell we want you to do" job title. It could be doing tech support, it could be doing project coordination/management, it could be reasonably technical, or any number of other things. Read the job description.
>>105589453I would also prefer just being a professor but I got married recently and I can't afford the years of minimum wage postdocs until a position maybe frees up
I was employed for a year and I've been unemployed for 6 months. During these 6 months I've been working on a pretty insane portfolio, easily averaging 10h a day, weekends included. It really isn't making any difference.
I don't feel discouraged myself because this kind of humiliation and lack of recognition is just what I'm used to in academia, but I wouldn't advise anyone who's not mentally ill to pursue this career.
>>105588078i'll even take a help desk job I don't care I'm not picky
>>105586083Software often ends up as a natural monopoly, since it scales so well and often benefits from network effects, so a single company can crush all competition and become almost impossible to compete against.

i stole a copy of my iep from mommy dearest and there's a line saying "classification: autistic" or something
and yes i'm aware there are absolute trainspotter numbnuts working for uncle sam but they get a lucky break since they don't have any official papers saying they're retarded (or were born too early to)
>>105591307everyone is mentally ill to some degree. i wouldn't pathologize mine even if there was an official diagnosis. just brush it off do what you have to do
>>105591289Dev/DevOps, a lot of my portfolio has been re-implementing and deploying popular apps or apps from the companies I'm applying to. I actually put one into video and it got a lot of views, and I made a website for an AI service that got like 500k users at some point.
I even made a proto-cloud using local hardware that was pretty decent and showed it scaling up to 20k workloads because I wanted to apply to AWS. Obviously it didn't matter but whatever, I'm getting pretty skilled.
Right now I got a bit obsessed with making my own Kubernetes/Nomad alternative because in my experience that shit is pretty unstable and overrated, I'm studying the big distributed computing papers and the prototypes I've made so far are pretty promising. Not sure what I'd do with this if I even managed it though, probably another demo with 100k workloads and fucking with nodes to show off self healing.
My CV shows this off pretty well, I'm not autistic at all and at least normie level charismatic during calls.
I'm starting to think about trying to monetize this stuff myself, but that's a whole different game. I don't know why nobody will employ me, I have no interest in any of the business/user side but I'm pretty good at solving problems. Their loss I guess.
>>105591381do you have any devops work experience? recruiters aren't technically well versed enough to gauge the quality of your projects. they mostly look at your experience.
try cold DMing founders or people who could refer you. they usually do look at your projects.

>another ai bullshitby then I was already jaded about startups, I just refused their take home, they pretended to give me an offer and on the last stage asked me to solve a take home again after 4 interviews.

>>105590500Absolutely. Right now I'm spending my time trying to start a startup but this country is so fucked it takes 6 months to register a company. Looking for jobs on the side but mostly given up on the prospect. The market is insane (beside, going the startup route would be cool). Originally my plan was to be a prof so I could use thr safety, budget and access to reduce costs and start something but that's not happening. Instead it's make it or go bankrupt apparently).
>>105591567Worked at 3 startups and 1 fagman. Doing startup 4 soon. First, I have only gotten to a human twice at anything not a startup..Second, they immediately failed me for knowing X and not X' before ever getting technical, and no amount of 'I can learn' or 'I know some of it' ever helped. The startups I joined were a shitshow in 2/3 cases and the 4th is legalAI bullshit. But they always paid well and the bullshit politics and mid pay at fagman can suck a dick.
>>105592024are you in the US? if so that might be why, I'm Canadian and we don't really have a startup ecosystem. I also don't have access to US market because I'm not Indian (yes I've tried)
