It's set to 2933mhz. Stupid question but what is the point of having four RAM slots and then it being worse to use 4x vs 2x? I know it doesn't run as quad channel and is just two up dual channel, although I don't know the real technical differences of that.

that's fine then, if it's using the timings from the XMP profile
>Stupid question but what is the point of having four RAM slots and then it being worse to use 4x vs 2x?
capacity is more important for many workloads
and it's not always worse, i'm running 4x8 3733 on ryzen 5000 no problem, but that's not happening on 1st or 2nd gen

>building a fanless desktop computer as a NAS
Feasible or ridiculous?

Context
>want NAS
>for various things but nothing heavy, probably idle 99% of the time
>array is currently made up of 4x 2TB 2.5" disks
>use old laptop, mix of internal bays and USB
>so far so good
>but fan is always going no matter what
>old Sandy bridge CPU, doesn't have modern efficiency features so fan is going at a certain base level all the time no matter what (yes thermal paste is good and recently refreshed, and fan/heatsink part is new too)
>don't want fan going 24/7. (a) it's not needed, idle 99% of time. (b) unnecessary 24/7 of moving part which isn't designed to be used 24/7. theoretical fire risk. (c) surprisingly annoying noise
>unplug fan from motherboard
>it works, temps barely any higher
>but boot problems. comes up with "Fan error" and won't boot
>only way around is to physically be at computer on boot/reboot and press Esc immediately
>it's a NAS and disconnected from outside net so it will hardly ever be rebooted, but still, annoying that reboots can't be done from afar, whether across local network or from outside of network
>look at chink fanless mini PCs with maximum USB ports as an alternative
>theyre not actually as cheap as i expected for what you get, esp those with ancient CPUs. kinda feel like a scam. also they are focused on lots of ethernet ports and com ports which are irrelevant to me. And they don't seem to have TPM modules - i like to encrypt all OSs.
>so, crazy thought...get around all these restrictions by building my own fanless NAS PC

How crazy is this idea?
Either a big giant desktop type where all the disks will be in the case (current array is 4 disks, but i want expansion room to at least 8 disks)
Or something smaller, something mini but ensuring adequate USB ports/bandwidth in order to attach all disks by USB

Fans constantly running at a set RPM is fine, it's the speed changes that cause more friction and wear.
Get an affordable noise-optimized fan.

I wouldn't bother with the 50-series and/or Nvidia, at least not until they get their prices under control.

The trick to getting a card at MSRP is to purchase whatever card within a week or two of release, at least as far as Micro Center is concerned. I picked up both an Arc B570 and RX 9060 XT at MSRP because I either bought them at launch or shortly after before the retail decided to jack up the prices.

This

For a long time, I was infatuated with doing a completely passive computer--including the PSU, but ended up realizing that having at least one single, low-RPM fan would drastically reduce temps.

You may have to spring for Noctua or BeQuiet fans, and/or get appropriate low-noise resistors, and put your computer anywhere but on your desk right next to your fucking head.

Coil whine sucks too, though, so try to get a quality PSU since it's usually the cheap ones that cause your graphics cards to squeal.

Yeah it's perfectly feasible. Low power CPU+IGP with a P1 or similar big passive cooler and you're basically done. I agree with the other anon though that having a single fan in there makes the temp control way easier. Were it me (with no budget constraints) I'd run a big case with 2x 200mm fans in front and a passive CPU cooler. Enough airflow to keep the internals fresh but still basically inaudible.

Guys, for a 4790k the stock cooler aint doing good. If i run prime95 it skyrockets to 90+ and the system freezes and shuts down as a safety thing against overheating.

Will the ''ID-Cooling SE-214-XT ARGB'' be great for it, it's 24โ‚ฌ?

(The reason is because it's a 10yo system and the h100 pump half died because sometimes it would work and other times it would not after years of being shut down and unplugged.)

Seeing as RTX 50 is a refresh gen it's plausible that they're going this fast because they can - most of the work is already done and the dev teams are well-familiar with the architecture. There could also be a mundane technical reason like improving yields.

Hello retard here, its my psu.
https://files.catbox.moe/p5xp6b.mp4
When in the case, the noise it makes when the fans slow down is constant. Im guessing its just just never apinning correctly. I thought it was coil whine and ignored it for a whole day. Its a MAG A850GL pcie5. Is it just completely fucked or can a fan replacement fix it. Not too poor so if it's best to get a new gpu I can.

9900X will run like a slightly better-clocked 9600X in gaymen.
5600MT/s JEDEC memory speed & timing are very suboptimal for gaymen, strongly recommended to stick with DDR5 1DPC set up for gaymen.
That 620M won't have the slots to fit both a 5090 and a sound card + network adapter.

The only Noctua fans worth paying the premium are the NF-A12x25 G2, NF-A14x25 G2, and the NF-A12x25 chromax.black (if you don't want Noctua brown fans).

Look at the slot layout; the top pcie is a x1, and it is above the pciex16... Also, the onboard 2.5g Ethernet leaves no need for a networking card (has $16 m.2 WiFi 6e too).

Out of the cheap trio:
- ASUS Prime
- AsRock Steel Legend
- Gigabyte Gaming OC

The Gigabyte is the only one with a vapor chamber. Apparently it can get really low hotspot temperatures but that thing sounds like a jet engine. Gigabyte took advantage of the vapor chamber to make one of the shortest cards, but I don't think it was the wisest decision, noise-wise.
I own the Steel Legend and it's very quiet even though it hits 2100RPM during hot days and heavy loads. Lanoc actually measured only 34dB

Sometimes there are anons from Europe, Asia, and South America asking questions.

The 9070 XT Steel Legend or Prime provides better value if you don't need NVIDIA-specific features like DLSS or Reflex.
Both have good build quality and are priced at around $715~720.
The cheapest 5070Ti in stock atm is the MSI Shadow (over $850 including shipping), this runs a bit loud at stock settings (2500 RPM fans), but could be toned down by custom fan curves and undervolting.
Prices for the better 5070Ti models like the MSI Vanguard is ridiculously overpriced ($970ish) and they're out of stock.
https://youtu.be/MplM3lCJ7Ps?t=501

Shadow kind of feels bad to recommend when it's sold above its MSRP.
Best Buy restocks a PNY 5070Ti priced @ $750 from time to time.

Maybe water cooling the Shadow is a cheaper option but I doubt it.

It looks like Zotac Solid was the best MSRP 5070 Ti while stocks lasted for a minute or so.

Ram training is fundamental to ddr technology so it happens regardless of speed. MCR works on my 6000mhz ram kit just fine and doesn't require training every boot.

>Ram training is fundamental to ddr technology
Not the extended training times that AM5 users are facing. If systems are training every time, you got a bum IMC or GSkill or whoever failed their own validation.

Extended training times make sense for servers with literal terabytes of memory, who do thread on the edge of stability even with matching MPNs, buffered DIMMs and JEDEC speeds.
People need to realize they just have been extremely lucky with DDR3 and DDR4. It's not even like your suffering for performance, you just want more than what's really guaranteed.

Extended ram training times on ddr5 is literally normal because of it's extremely high signalling speed. I think you simply forgot how long it took for the first boot and didn't measure it or you have an MSI/gigabyte board with optimized boot times. I've also owned lga1700 13th gen and 12th gen and both took about the same time to train ddr5.

Is there any point in getting an AIO with my 10th i9? I bought a Phantom Spirit for like $40 and it works, but it still gets up there, to around the lower and mid 90s during stress tests rather quickly, like within 1-2 minutes depending on the ambient temp. Obviously normal though, as stress tests do that. When I am just doing other stuff it ranges from like 60-80C while playing games to about the mid to high 80s for stuff like converting videos with FFmpeg. For that specifically it goes from 40C to about 80C within a second.
Looking at AIOs, something like the be quiet light loop 360, at 250w (for a 13700k) the difference are about 7C between the Spirit and the AIO. Would that even be worth it? I've tried reading up on temperature fluctuations too and as far as I understand even with an AIO an i9 as well as some i7s with simply go and down 10C at times, within a second. Like from 62C to ~70C and then right back down again. From my understanding fluctuations generally aren't good for longevity, but they can't be avoided with these hotter Intel chips, no? I've had a crappy i5 and later Xeon for a decade, so seeing these high temps and especially the fluctuations is weird to me.

I think it mainly depends on which resolution your display has. If 1440p then you are well served with a 9070 XT or better served with a 5070 Ti. If your display is 4k you will want to have more than just 16GB VRAM and probably also more performance if high fps is important to you. A 4090 or 5090 with a 4k display are high-end. A 5070 Ti with a 1440p display is high-start but not high-end and a 5080 is somewhere in between, high or high-mid, it doesn't deserve the high-end label with just 16GB VRAM, the same amount that a shabby 5060 Ti has.

I've been shilling the Arctic B-Stock (open box, 6-year warranty) AIOs in this thread, worth buying one of them for less than $60.
360mm B-Stocks all sold out, there's 240/280/420mms left. I would go with either 280 or 420mm.
280mm AIOs usually run about as well as a 360 in realistic loads (no stress test).

This idea is straight-up retarded.
Even if you got it down to 300W, there's going to be transient spikes.
And I believe the 5090 will require 4x 8pin PCIe power connection which most 550W PSUs won't provide.

I've seen 5090 owners with entry/mid-level 1440p Acer monitors, and some with terrible memory kits, but this idea is quite up there.

I don't trust Arctic's fans desu. Bought a 5pack of the P14 PWM and they were rather disappointing. I'm a snob when it comes to noise. I did see a Thermalright AIO for $50 a few days ago, and while the Spirit's fans are very quiet, comparable to something like my Shadow Wing 2 exhaust (not at the same RPM, general noise quality and dba w/ different RPMs), I don't trust the longevity of the fans.
I'll likely just get two more Shadows Wing 2 140mm for the front and maybe a 120mm for the GPU side panel.

I wish Noctuas weren't badly priced here. Here a 140mm Noctua is $40. Or Euro rather. The home country of the company as well. Have a friend in the US and over there they're supposedly only around 25 for the high-end brown ones. Really weird.

Oh yes, they did exist even 30 years ago and we were using jumpers to clear CMOS because there was no CMOS reset button on mobos back then. You can use anything conductive to bridge the contacts but a jumper is the most comfy and you can leave it on a pin for the future.

>I honestly don't even know what a CMOS is
I think it's a chip that stores your PC's BIOS settings, the CMOS battery lets the chip store those settings even when the PC is turned off.
When you boot up the PC, the motherboard's going to read the settings stored in the CMOS chip.

If you overclock your PC and it causes crash/freeze/boot issues, you "clear" the CMOS to make this chip forget the problematic settings.

The battery is expected to last between 5~10 years as long as the PSU is on (the PC doesn't have to be powered on).
Worst case, removing the chipset heatsink won't be too difficult.

Neural textures will save PC gayming but it will also mean that we will be building PCs with 8GB cards for the rest of time. If a game needs more VRAM they'll just crank up the compression factor, and presumably the performance increases per generation will make up for that need (and also conveniently degrade performance on older cards).

Poors will never have the VRAM necessary to run even a light AI model.

I can only talk from an AMD perspective:
If you're talking CPUs, it's dumb. You should be undervolting or using AMD's curve optimizer instead. The end result is much better and very safe
If you're talking GPUs, it's ok. Undervolting can give the same if not better results than overclocking. The big gains come when you do both undervolting and overclocking. On AMD's side it's safe if you stick to the radeon software.

I bought the game on launch and itโ€™s been well over a month now and the difficulty is still completely fucked. Game is unplayable. I havenโ€™t felt like such an idiot for buying a game since I was a dumb kid who bought the sequel to Mirrorโ€™s Edge.

500hz qdoled coming soon is the best, after that the 480hz
if you are poor I guess the 240-360 ones and get a deal
again qd > woled

for ultra premium asus > msi
but I guess since msi patched their refresh refresh window up to 24h they might be acceptable now a days but kinda still not how it should behave

if you arent for 500hz refreshes just get a 4k one if you arent poor

NTA but it kinda doesn't matter.
You strive for radiators to be the last thing in a loop before returning to the reservoir but its a few C difference if any at all if in another order.

The water has to be somewhat warm before any heat dissapation in the rads can take place anyway.

Very brave of you to assume that an lcd will work for 10 years straight and have no electrical failure during that time, aka, the LCDs last for forever-fallacy
Also, you will still be looking at poop
Also, oled never was for poorfags, however, now you can get second hand panels, tvs are regularly being sold out at discount prices, if you cant afford 600 bux for a brand new oled tv to use as a monitor maybe you have other issues you need to sort out
