The first recession I remember was in the early 1990โ€™s, and I remember it so well because I was looking for a job. The want ads listed an opening for a UNIX admin โ€“ something which was right up my alley โ€“ so I gave the company a ring.

โ€œYe-LLO!โ€ was the greeting after a couple of rings. In the background, it sounded like John Philip Sousa March music was playing on a 1960s AM transistor radio.

โ€œUmโ€ฆ I am calling about the want ad in the paper for a UNIX admin?โ€

โ€œYeah yeah, sure sure,โ€ he responded enthusiastically.

After a long pause, I asked โ€œis the position still available?โ€

โ€œUh nuh.โ€

Another long pause led me to ask โ€œSo it is?โ€

โ€œYah.โ€

โ€œWould you like me to come in for an interview?โ€

โ€œNah, I can do it over the phone,โ€ the sound of a chair squeaking came through the line and the music stopped playing, โ€œOkayโ€ฆ I am looking for someone who can program UNIX. Also, has to know PASCAL pretty well. Processor design. Vast familiarity with X.25 protocol. Some BASIC, ALGOL, Lisp, Borland, relational databases, Lotus spreadsheets, VAX administration, PC repair, all those sorts of things. Oh, and also, have a degree in engineering and computer programming.โ€

โ€œUm, really? Processor design? What kind of job is this?โ€

โ€œWell, itโ€™s an assistant manager of a storage warehouse.โ€

โ€œYou mean, like a data center?โ€

โ€œNo, no,โ€ he chuckled, โ€œself-storage. You know, like U-Haul and EZ-Storage.โ€

โ€œSo why would an assistant manager of a storage place need all those skills?โ€

โ€œThey donโ€™t. I am just sick of getting dumbass applicants. I thought Iโ€™d raise the bar a little and only get smart college guys and the like.โ€

I didn't know what to say. I wished him well, and hung up. That ad was up for nearly a year in the want ads.

If your goal is employment, look up the job listings in your area and figure out what tech is being used for jobs you'd be interested in.

I had learned Go because beforehand I was using Nodejs for everything and I needed e-z concurrency. If I was employment focused, I'd learn more about C# because every fuckin' web shit job in Brisbane requires it.

I'm working as a mover currently while I job search for an IT gig and I love it. My company markets themselves as a high end choice and they charge more than others, so I end up getting paid well for the work I do and the clients are often wealthy. Sometimes they give us each 100 dollar tips after a job. Can pick up gigs whenever I want or just not too, and I don't have any back trouble from it as I use good form and have always been fit. I almost don't want to work in tech anymore. Definitely don't miss hell desk.

I made a fast api python thing where the endpoints map to a variety of Linux commands. It runs on some kind of smart fiber modem thing for this weird city wide vlan thing. Thing mostly interfaced with qemu and was for ISPs to use it as a hypervisor for their own software or something.
Think it was like 3000 lines though so nothing huge. Im not too sure on how efficient it is for its use case. Im not even too sure on the use case, they just told me what they wanted the endpoints like and what it should do.
Half way through they told me I was actually writing it as a port to their own api that was written in go.
This was like 3 years ago and they hardly told me anything.

The job market will get better at some point right?
I mean, this can't just keep going on with how things are. All these cost saving strategies have to take its toll on the amount a company can put out.
And then its also not healthy to have tons of degree holders to be working crap jobs. Not to mention the price of everything now, especially houses.

Actually, is the birth rate problem even a problem? (If we dont just mass import) because that just means the next generation will have a workforce shortage so there should be plenty of jobs going around.

I'm probably being asked because I haven't signed into it for years, and every fucking security system websites use these days is overdone. Seems some people randomly get asked it. I'm wondering if they can't ask outside of the US, which makes sense because we have shitty privacy laws.

I went with Bailey Jay, which apparently makes me gay since shes a guy. He went with Buck Angel since that's a woman.

My brain still tells me Baily Jay.

Manifesting hopping from hell desk to engineering and getting a 2x pay bump, this recruiter who found me really wants to sell me, it seems. My company is over a barrel with all the roles I'm covering for them right now due to others leaving/poor hiring, I am not sure I want to negotiate. After 3.5yrs of my dept not getting the proper focus, leadership, or incentivization, they can figure it out. I've done enough, everyone else is remote post-COVID, so random shit just falls on the 1-2 retards in office, and no one cares. Wish me luck, /g/.

Engineering in IT varies between 180-350k based upon company and job location. If you are 2x your current income then that normally only comes out to only 80k which is more mid level specialized IT careers. Please consider job searching to see what he market is really demanding for each position and the pays associated with it. IT engineering you need your masters degree, high level certs, and atleast a decade of job experience. It is not easy.

I was being vague, but I agree. Frankly, this is a hell desk's interpretation of "engineer"in my opinion. However, it is a mid-level internal systems role for endpoint deployment architecture moving from sccm to intune, internal app packaging, possibly a more focused sys admin above the help desk, below SOC/NOC, or at a similar level, although I am unsure in that regard. 120-160K range+20-30Kyrly bonus and nearly double the PTO. Fits my role history with room for growth, I guess I may still be considered overpaid for helldesk at $75K as a T2? I know those are probably baby numbers for some, but I would feel a new level of security finally getting there with plenty of room to grow. My dept tops out at around 90K, so no reason to stick around. Worked as a great foot in the door, though!

I correct my response you are going to do fine but manifesting in its basics is just asking for your subconscious to give you an answer so you can follow its direction. Its essentially short form focused meditation. You are not a retard if you know the market most people barely even know what there job is about or the long term career prospects and end up at help desk for 20 years instead of moving up since they have zero ambitions.

I hope you get what you want by working towards the goals. For help desk that is alright my T5 help desk makes 95k but its alright compared to mid level roles and ass to higher end roles. Engineering gets paid closer to actual FAANG programmers but the skies the limits with those positions.

Write everything relevant in your job to your resume, get your shit together and succeed.

Thanks, anon. The manifesting bit is more me mocking those who say that without any prep, and just being hopeful of the hiring process. I am confident I can impress once I get them in the room, my experience is shockingly tailored for this role, and I know how to express my value, not just rattling off specs or certs. I appreciate your insight, and I do see that lack of ambition in almost all of my help desk co-workers, and it really hurts me. We are very jocular with each other, but everything about ambition, change, and growth is a joke tinged with defeatism, too, not healthy. But seems to be the fate of the MSP. One of my T3's, a good friend, with his master's in CompSci, Bachelor's in IT Management, and military experience, can easily make $200K at any one of these military contractors, but he is content to be lazy as a T3 at 90K with menial bumps.

It's the same here in the US. IBM is filled with Indians. They claim it's because there's not many engineers here, but that's a lie. So many unemployed engineers out of school who can't get a job cause all the tech departments are hiring only indians.

Do you guys waste time at work? I sometimes waste 80% of my day. I figure Iโ€™ll get fucked at some point but it never happens, I do most of my work in one or two days and I never do more than required. Anyway Iโ€™m tired as fuck this morning, gonna scroll X for a while then go take a bathroom break, then get some coffee. A part of me feels bad for it though.

idk man, my buddy went into finance, and while he's doing well (senior manager already) he still makes less $ than me and has to go into the office 5 days a week. In some ways it looks better but in other ways he is super envious of me too he said.

FAGMANs take minimum 2 weeks to pass or fail you. They need to have 5 meetings on the subject to tentatively make a small decision plus a signoff from a VP.

Why? It's the result of so many clever ideas by people way smarter than you openly collaborating. The internet is one of the most incredible social and technical creations of humanity. Being able to study it is a privilege.

Its pretty gud but the cisco TCP/IP 1&2 is considered the definitive edition. Applying what you learn to networking or cybersecurity is how you really get gud.

Funny I work for Cisco and have never read any books from them. My reflexive assumption is that it won't be good if you want to understand networking in general since a corporation published it but I guess now that places like Bell Labs are gone maybe we are really the best out there.

Cisco is king of networking and has been for 20 years. CCNA and ccnp are literally the only networking certs that matter. Do you live under a rock or something?

Next to juniper it seems like cisco is really the only company producing books for their certifications. Yes the books are good quality for explaining things. Before youtube, boson and other bootcamps cisco press was the only way to learn the material.

I know. I just wanted to show off my swag drink receptacle.
It's like $23 from the original vendor. I know it's only probably $5 chineseum but it's a nice tumbler

Got it at a hashicorp "let me suck you off and sell you more services / software" event with several other companies. Was a fun event without much pressure honestly
