Bazzite-OS-running-GNOME-desktop-on-Steam-Deck-1024x640 (1)
I'm not buying another PC because windows is being fucking retarded.
>Have a laptop with a 2080
>Another Laptop with a 4060
>A desktop with an intell i-7 and a 3070
>And old PC running an AMD FX 8350 and AMD RX480 combo
>Another obsolete PC same but with a RX460
From what I hear Linux doesn't run well on Nvidia and my only Linux experience is my steam deck.
I like the experience... but when shit doesn't work cause no driver support I have a feeling I will like it less.
I was planning on keeping my main rig at the very least windows but I have a feeling the prebuild (bought durring COVID and pre-built was the same price as the graphics card alone) didn't include the stupid TMS module

Arch is notoriously "hard" to install, but to be honest it seems likes it's "hard" in for people who have never run DOS before and if I only have to deal with it once then I'm good.
I was thinking Bazzite till fedora was talking about killing all 32 bit support.
I need to look up info on Cachy.
At the end of the day if it runs "close enough" to how windows runs and can play most of my steam games I am a happy boy.

Thanks for the info. I looked it up and yeah, apparently Nvidia does make Linux drivers.
Hopefully I don't have too many problems making the leap to switch...
I feel bad for Linux bros cause you are about to get flooded with tech illiterate people who barely know how to use Linux demanding shit "just work" and harassing the devs.

I have a 4060TI.
Only problem I had so far is that waydroid only works with AMD cards. Everything else works better since I upgraded from my RX580.
Just get the proprietary drivers.

Yes, Fedora, Debian, Arch, Gentoo, Guix, nixOS.
>"But I don't want to manually install drivers"
Then get Nobara, Bazzite or Nyarch. pop_OS! also has NVIDIA drivers ootb but is still relying on Ubuntu 22.04.

Probably not. Just get a good distro. Fedora just works for me.
Stay away from ubuntu. It was good in 2010, not anymore.

Bazzite was what I was thinking since it gets promoted the most.
I hear Pop is great but I need I dunno how it will run proton compatability or if that even is a thing I should be concerned about. Like is proton just some add on I can add to any distro?
I also wanna start with something easy to use.
Was thinking mint but heard its spyware more or less.

It will probably work. I think it's based on fedora kinoite? Anyway, should be fine. It's immutable, though. Don't ask me what that means, ask chatgpt, because I don't know.

I keep hearing people say immutable is a bad thing, from what I understand it's guard rails to keep me from yeeting important files that break the OS.

What can't I do on an Immutable system?

I ran EndeavourOS with a 1070 never had any problems with drivers the 4 years I used it, only problem I had was grub killed itself a few times, so don't use grub, if i remember right there is a little welcome guide that tells you how to set up the driver I think it was just a command to paste into a terminal then it always worked from there.

You're lying to yourself. There's still a huge performance hit running any DX12 game on Linux vs Windows on Nvidia cards. Anywhere from 10-50%+ depending on the title. Nvidia's Linux driver may not be the broken, unusable mess it was a few years ago, but it still performs like shit compared to the Windows one. It's also lacking a bunch of functionality by comparison, such as letting you undervolt your card.

Nvidia is still a distant third when it comes to Linux driver support, and no amount of cope will change that.

>From what I hear Linux doesn't run well on Nvidia
AMD works well with open source drivers, so it's more a streamlined experience.
Just plug the card in, and you're done.
They both have issues with regressions, with Nvidia being slightly worse in my case.

>I hear Pop is great but I need I dunno how it will run proton compatability or if that even is a thing I should be concerned about. Like is proton just some add on I can add to any distro?
Newer versions of proton may depend on libraries that more stale distros do not have, but I don't know if that applies to Pop. Pop WAS great, but they dragged ass on their last release, and the UI looks kind of shitty.
>Was thinking mint but heard its spyware more or less.
What? The mint guy has an anti-Israel history but otherwise keeps politics out of the distro, so you were probably told some BS by shills.

>I also wanna start with something easy to use.
Just install an Ubuntu-LTS derived distro like mint or pop like everyone else.
Avoid the immutable nonsense trend - Flatpak isn't quite ready for a distro to revolve around it.

nobara has an nvidia edition that works very well for my casual gaming. AAA and more obscure titles, no major issues except at the highest settings on games like cyberpunk, but I had those on windows too
