Don't buy anything OTHER THAN IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad T, X, and W/P Series (especially X230, T440p and T480, those are the best pads for bucks) if you want the Real Business Experienceโ„ข
>Other business laptops are welcome in /tpg/ (Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook)

Why ThinkPad?
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap
>Excellent keyboards, tactile feel and quiet
>Great durability: magnesium roll cage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop
>Easy to repair (most models), upgrade & maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model, spare parts easy & cheap to obtain
>Excellent Linux & *BSD support
>Trackpoint (why the fuck wasn't this in the general before? that's the only reason to get a thinkpad in 2025 honestly)

I meant to have my T480 repaired as the T14 gen 1 to gen 4 have soldered rams and the T14 gen 5 is still too expensive. T480 also needs screen replacement as it comes with 250 nit trash.
But I'm looking at T14 (non S) now. Seems like the fsvored ones are Gen 2 and Gen 3 atm.

I just got a Thinkpad T480 in good shape on a $100 offer on ebay. It came with the 1080p screen, 8gb of ram, backlit keyboard, and no SSD which was okay because I got a 2TB WD Black drive from Wally world for $110. Body was in good shape with minimal wear. I put Libreboot on it over the weekend and installed Mint with no issues. I went kind of retard today and put 64gb of ram in it and memtest86 showed no errors.

Anyone know if I can run a second M.2 drive in the WWAN slot if I have one in the caddy already? I'm not sure if it supports two simultaneously.

I'll try that if switching DEs still doesn't work. I wanted to open it up anyways because the refurbishing company did the strange choice of giving me a T420 battery, and I found a random fragment of plastic that was blocking the DVD player from being inserted, so I don't think the company that refurbished it did the best job they could've.

>>106065347
I'll do that, I already tried switching to another DE (TDE) before, but for some strange reason, it didn't work, it gave me a black screen when I tried switching. But maybe I'll have better luck with xfce or lxde instead.

>>106065527
Well truth be told, I wanted something that's a bit closer to TDE in aesthetics rather than KDE itself. I am actually not fond of KDE's default aesthetics. But I'll try this one too.

You can. It has to be NVMe and either 2242 B+M key or 2230 with a B+M key adapter. I think the only model where WWAN SSD support depended on the choice of main SSD was T460p.

I have a T14 Gen 1 (AMD). The trackpoint works flawlessly on Linux and mostly fine on Win11 with the generic PS/2 driver (but with inferior scrolling behavior). As soon as I install the Synaptics driver, I get severe, random cursor stutter--trackpad is fine, only the trackpoint is fugged.

Tried older Synaptics drivers, didn't help. Found some threads about AMD drivers causing cursor stutter, but it affected both inputs, not just trackpoint. Thinking of trying Win10 LTSC but I doubt it'll help. Worth noting that I replaced the trackpad (with an X1C trackpad) and keyboard with AliExpress parts. However, the keyboard (I think it's a Chicony) was from a reputable vendor and I haven't found a single review or post having the same issue as me.

People generally prefer them here. The battery life is slightly worse vs Intel but that's the only downside I'm aware of. You need to plan for more RAM because the AMD iGPU will reserve more system RAM, but it's more performant. I guess it depends on your use case.

Did Lenovo gyp people on the magnesium or aluminum for some ryzen models?

I'd replace just the keyboard first since a broken trackpoint can interfere with a working touchpad. The mouse buttons are part of the keyboard too.

If you do have to replace the touchpad, you can do it by unscrewing four screws covered by the internal battery. You can use touchpads listed for other models too, such as E480-E490, L480-L14G2, T470-T14G2, P1G1-G2.

T490 is the best for me

i7 8th gen, hot, but my i just use firefox and YT)
16 gb of RAM, more than enough for mi
512 gb of ssd, in the future it will be upgrade to a 1TB but still enough for me

Screen OK!!
Keboard, trackpad, mousepad, trackpoint, speed of ports and type C more than ok!!

All that said, why i feel that i need more? i dont feel complete or satisfied

i was thinking on a L14 Gen 4 with the Ryzen 5 pro but i think it will be the same

Why T490? T14 Gen 2 is the same chassis, but can be had with AMD which runs cooler, lasts 2x as long in battery and has a better GPU. And doesn't suffer from USB-C controller dying like the t490.

How does this T16 G3 Intel look? Its cheaper than the L16 link sent by first anon, from what I understand isn't the T line better quality than the L line? is the cheaper price because of the weaker chip, intel in the T16 vs the AMD in the L16?

Ryzen is strictly better in T14 G2 and better in all but battery life in G1. Just get the newest one you can afford, unless you need over 5h of battery (in which case avoid T14G1) or support for two SSDs (avoid T14G2)

With a steady enough hand you can cut the key out of the slot to make the 2242 SSD fit (and work). Or if you have a dead Ex80/Ex90, you can take the SATA ribbon cable from it and carefully unglue and straighten the folds to reuse it in the L480.

T14 Gen 3 is preferable because the keyboard is quieter than basically any other laptop keyboard.
But Lenovo listened to you fat fucking losers poorfags complaining and made the newer keyboards "better"/more tactile but now they're fucking louder.

T14 G3 AMD still to this day has the best battery life.

I personally think the difference is marginal, but still noticeable. Be aware you may get different results with random chink keyboards, branded "Lenovo". There's an autist that can tell you what the best manufacturer is for that particular FRU if you're going genuine.

source: X230 with genuine X220 keyboard replacement (great quality, crisp key actuation). That one died after ~8 years of heavy use, replaced with AliExpress "Lenovo" X220 keyboard (mushy but functional, not impressed).

I wouldn't know anymore. I doubt Lenovo even sells them direct in 2025. You'd probably have to find a legit scrapper/recycler on eBay and get one used. I wouldn't trust any of these /csg/ stores to have any genuine products unless you pored over images of genuine ones and compared to product pics on their site - and then actually got what was pictured. I can tell you the AE one I got, the scissor switches and keycaps weren't even the same/interchangeable. Unexpected but not really surprising. Of course, I was going for cheap. I just needed a keyboard that worked. Both the original X230 keyboard and the original X220 swap I had were shot and I was limping it along without putting a bunch more money into it.

I'm fairly certain it isn't that. The little audio thing on windows in the taskbar says no audio device detected, and when I've looked for audio drivers I think there weren't any. I would check again but the thing is so slow and deficient in other ways that it's probably just not worth keeping anyways, and I packed it back up, google wouldn't even open. I think I might look into selling it.

Fair enough. My next step would have been to check the BIOS to make sure it wasn't disabled there. And speaking of BIOS, do a bios update. Sometimes that can solve startup problems.

Take the cheaper one unless its screen is HD and the expensive one has FHD. i5 vs i7 is negligible if you don't do the dual heatpipe upgrade and you could upgrade from 8 to 64 GB of RAM for the price difference.

Thanks. If and when I get around to messing with it again I'll do that. Could this also potentially solve the overall slowness or might that be a hardware problem? The first time I started it up I went through all of the same stuff I did earlier, but I did manage to get google going eventually (which itself took a very long time), I can't remember if it remained slow the whole time or if it was all down to a long extended boot up. I don't know if that would make sense or not.

Do you mean the Chrome browser?

Windows a shit and is going to be doing all sorts of setup/update retardation on first boot up. If it isn't (or might not be) the original SSD, make sure it's not a SATA SSD instead of NVME. That makes things slower. Disk encryption makes things slower. I don't know what your tolerance level for latency, "slow" is a relative term. And yes, newer BIOS revisions are going to fix all kinds of fucky behavior and bugs...usually (and expectedly) related to hardware access, with slow startup times sometimes being a symptom of that root problem.

If it were me, even if there's not a newer version, I'd reflash the latest anyway just for peace of mind.

Yes.

Could be the case, but the slowness is so insane I don't know how much that can account for it.
>make sure it's not a SATA SSD instead of NVME
Thanks. I'll check to see if that's the case. I'm a bit of a computer noob, still learning.
>I don't know what your tolerance level for latency, "slow" is a relative term.
I'd say it's WELL beyond the threshold for tolerance levels, and in the realm of reasonable unusability. I recall it taking probably over a minute to open settings on it. I might even be undershooting the amount of time it took to boot it up. It may well have been over 10 minutes, but I digress.

I'll test what you suggested. Thonks.

All the electronics inside were covered in a film of weed smoke gunk.
I had to spend a week degunking it with rubbing alcohol before I could use it.

I'd take the T480 with i5. The i3 in the other T480 is a dual-core that you can get in older (and better in other aspects) models for cheaper. The only thing the T14 (gen 1) has going for it is possibly a better screen, and it has the disadvantages of soldered wifi and no support for a second drive.

My thinkpad T480 has some weird behavior when charging
It alternates between charging and not charging sometimes when plugged in. I don't think it's the USB c because I can wiggle it and it doesn't induce this, it has to be something else. I don't notice it with the oem charging block but with anything else should be charging at 100 watts+ (charging station with 100w USB c to USB c cables)

Is it due to the infamous nvm/thunderbolt controller failure? Or something else?

What are some solutions to x250/x260/x270 chassis flex issues? This is the problem where when the laptop is picked up from a corner, the chassis flexes and displacing the RAM causing it to BSOD or crash. So far, I've found the following fixes online:

- Stop picking it up from the corner.
- Add rubber feet around the RAM slot to prevent it from getting displaced.
- Bend the left and right retainers of the RAM slot inwards.
- Applying threadlocker to the chassis screw holes.
- Attach a metal board underneath the laptop (search "x260 BSDO TiFixer")

This whole issue seems pretty silly. I presume most people not picking it up from the corner?

Those aren't "oil stains", it's the plastic being worn down, and it will have those "oil stains" if you use it longer.
