I think Hifiman despite de QC issues has some very good headphones. There really isn't much competition if you want planars, and I barely ever recommend dynamics unless the person is on a really really tight budget, so... On the higher range (price) there's Audeze but I think they're overpriced af because Hifiman exists.
I pretty much recommend the 400SE to everyone who's starting out in audio and has 100 bucks to spend, nothing else I'd rec really.

the m50x is very uncomfortable, it's super clampy and has essentially no padding on the headband. It's almost black friday so if you want something cheap I imagine there will be sales on hd 599 or more sales on the 560s if you want them again. m40x is also an option if you want a cheaper headphone with better tuning, maybe you could soft mod it with some more padding if you want closed backs

they are unbelievably uncomfortable and the rubber bands that self adjust the headband tend to go within a few years. They have a known problem where one of the drivers dies, probably due to poor soldering jobs and could be fixed if thats something you care to do. Aside from that they have probably the widest soundstage in their price range, if you find them uncomfortable which you probably will you can double sided tape or adhesive some form of padding to them like eggshell foam to help it. They weren't for me but you might like them

i've got a pair of r70x around and they are fine. They weigh almost nothing but the headband is pretty fucking stupid, some people are going to find them very comfortable, and they are going to be torture for others. The sound is fine, it's basically just a hd 600 line with some soundstage instead of having absolutely none. I doubt anyone is going to find them too harsh at anything, pretty good over all. Build is solid enough, probably one of the better headphones in that price range, especially if the old stock of the r70x is still around you now that they they've discond it for r70xa

I've tried them in stores a few times. I never really liked these, the senny headband design doesn't fit me (the earpads always make a gap above or below my ears) so it always sounds weird unless I push the earcups into my head. Imaging sucks too; Grados feel more musical to me.

It's so crazy how cancer bad the headphone industry is, theres a few companies that even try to make decent things and the rest are filled with bad actors and dishonesty and refusing to warranty products. On any given day I can find a solid stereo stack from 70-90s for sub $100 perfectly working all made in japan. Something weird happened with my headphones (beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro).
I had them plugged in my tablet and was listening to music, everything working fine. I went out for a bit and when I returned the tablet wasn't detecting the headphones anymore. Like they stayed plugged in the entire time, nothing changed but suddenly they weren't showing as connected.
So I tried plugging them into my computer and the computer detects them but the sound is quieter than before and sort of muffled and not entirely clear.
It's like they became randomly broken when they were working fine 30 minutes prior. The cable doesn't seem to be damaged from what I can see.
Other headphones work with the devices fine.
Anyone here has any idea what could've gone wrong?

I was first looking at either the FiiO FT5 or FT7 but Gemini talked me out of it (recommending the Audeze Maxwell above all else for my purposes). I don't have any consoles btw, so IDK what version I should get, also don't need a mic, I have an AT2020 at my desk.

Then don't get open backs. Last I checked FT7 had issues with dying drivers. FT5 is fine but open backs WILL leak sound.

Midrange should always comply with the target as closely as possible. Upper midrange especially. Otherwise it'll sound off. As long as the treble or the bass don't have a 10+ dB deficiency then it's fine since those depend on each person's taste and HRTF. It doesn't matter all that much, the only difference is X uses perforated ear pads. These are decently hard to drive so you might want to get a DAC/Amp with these.
Topping makes well measuring ones. FiiO makes decent stuff too. Any desktop DAC/Amp from either of these would probably suffice. You could also get something from Schiit but their customer support is horrendous.

You just connect it to your PC via USB and connect the headphones to it. That's it. More comfortable than using built in audio since you can adjust volume with a knob instead of keyboard shortcuts or other gay shit like that. And most amps use a few watts at most, USB only ones use even less. So basically nothing. It's speaker amps that drain a fuckton of electricity.

It's basically plug and play, you just plug it into the amp instead of the onboard audio. There's no setup needed beyond connecting the amp via USB and plugging the headphones in. If you want even less setup there are also dongles that achieve the same thing but desktop amps are more durable so there's no reason not to get that. That, and solid state amps don't usually break so it'll last you longer than the headphones and the PC in all likelihood.

The noise floor is higher than a lot of DACs. It's not bad enough to be noticeable. This is usually only a problem when you're running IEMs or something with a similarly high sensitivity. Usually sounds like hiss. For headphones it would be fine and certainly a lot better than the onboard audio. If you're not hearing anything like that from your onboard audio now you won't with this either. I said it's not terrible since there are other options that have a low enough noise floor to use with pretty much any audio device but those usually don't have a mic in. Again, if you're not using IEMs with it you'll be fine.

Tube amps are for high impedance headphones. Most planars are low impedance. Tube amps will struggle with powering Aeons especially since they're low impedance and low sensitivity. That, and planars have a flat impedance curve meaning unlike dynamic drivers, a planar magnetic headphone will not sound much different when driven from a tube amp. Meaning you're just getting the same sound signature as a solid state amp and the headphones will be underpowered to boot. Tubes are fine for high impedance dd headphones.
