Nearly everyone recommends the same traditional open-back headphones, for everyone, for all use cases except portability. I'm not buying a new house just because my living room is next to my kitchen. Every closed back headphone has been effectively blacklisted for one reason or another (poor sound stage, bad treble, etc). People ALWAYS default to open back. Back in my day, people wore headphones so that other people didn't hear you and vice versa. What happened to that? Oh, that's right: profits overtook functionality. You get disposable hood rat e-crap or you get swiss cheese-backed hurr durr hungo dungos.

Just tried some music with the hd490 pro and the sony mdrm1 in store. I was interested in the senny hd490 but sound wise, felt a little neutral and somehow reduced the bass I tend to enjoy more. The mids sound a little recessed compared to the sony one as well. But it is very comfortable, and overall it isn't as loud as the Sony. No experience using dacs or eqing, not really a headphones guy either, but I tend to favour more of the bass guitar in my music. Is it possible to do eqs on the senny to bring the mids forward and hear a bit more of the bass? My usecase is primarily Vidya 80% of the time and 20% casual listening while I do some programming. Too much piercing would kill my brain. I like to listen to Korean/Japanese alt/grunge lol. Yes I'm a dweeb.

I ask because nearly every pair of cups i've bought have come with some (i'm using an M1060 but lmao anything that fits an LCD2 also fits) and my existing tape has disintegrated and my research just ends up with the rolls of tape rather than the circles suitable for cups.

It doesn't help that even harman cultists never actually read the whitepaper (when it was public at least) as the curve everyone assumes what is the harman curve is just an average of several as the research showed preferences skewed depending on age and even gender and the whitepaper offers other curves accordingly.

Regular "people" also use dogshit bluetooth headphones with a 20 db bass boost. If you're not grading headphones objectively you'll end up with a 5k tube amp and some dogshit abyss headphones because mr youtube shill told you it broadens the soundstage. Or that a pure gold cable improves treble. Don't make me post the audiophile rocks, anon.

you're going to get heavy bass and muted treble
use their in-room reference curve and tweak to taste (or use any diffuse field target, it depends on your ears which aren't made of plastic like a dummy head)

actually looking at, i don't think my skull is bad, instead i think this design is just retarded. every other pair of headphones i've worn has had a soft, padded headband that sits pretty high in a neutral position, and you just lay it on top of your head, allowing the headphones to tighten around your ears and take some of the weight off.
but the k612s have a leather headband that is already taut when you're not wearing it, and it seems to be designed to push into your skull for no real reason. you can't even add your own padding because it doesn't actually solve the tightness issue. but at the same time the headphones themselves have trouble really settling around your ears firmly, so all that pressure is on the top of your skull. just awful. maybe studio headphones are supposed to be like this, idk

Can any anons comment on the DT 770 PRO vs. TYGR 300r? I've been hearing many good things about both of these, and they happen to be in my price range. I will mainly use them for music and gaming, occasionally movies. The one thing which concerns me is I hear that the 300r is better for immersive gaming, but at the same time that the 770s are better for 'explosions' because of higher sub bass, and given the type of vidya I play (Red Orchestra, War of Rights etc.) this might just be, in fact, more immersive for me.
I've also heard that the 770s are better for music due to their higher clarity. So I'm overall having a rather hard time choosing between them. Can any anons give advice?

- If it's not loud enough get then you need an amp (check op post for those) or an audio interface (behringer umc204hd, scarlet solo 4th gen, motu m2)
- Yes you can, get EQ apo, if you want something similar to mdr-m1 it looks like you need to start with harman eq (oratory 1990 has one, I think) for 490 and then play around with upper bass (150-250hz)
do open back headphones improve the ear airflow?
i'm at the point where i'd rather do anything but put the things on and suffocate my ears
i've switched everything but desktop use to bone conduction headphones and i'm at the point where i'd rather buy high end of that shit than wear any generic headset just because of how much i dread the feeling it gives

Most of them do not do that, because the driver and ear cap (plastic part between ear cup and earpad, that holds the driver) closes off your ear. You get airflow mostly from earpads. Best ones for air flow are either just soft foam (check koss porta pro as an example), velour or cloth

I turned off my pedestal fan and my amp stopped working. It's done this before (not sure if previously due to fan) and ends up working again later, but I'm wondering what this phenomena is called and why it happens. They're both plugged into the same power board, there's no surge protection and nothing else was affected (computer stayed on, etc.)

You could also try on-ears like Grados which do not form a seal but are very uncomfortable (to some) in other ways and often have weird sound signatures. (to some. I like the ones I have)

You have no idea because you've never opened a set of headphones
Here are 2 examples how openback headphones are usually built
On the left your ear is closed off by the driver and driver cap
On the right two types of acoustically transparent material highlighted in green, the paper one looks like it will allow airflow but it doesn't, unless you try to directly blow trough it, and even then it's negligible. As an example I also have dt770 (they also use velour pads) and I don't feel any difference between them and hd560 when it comes to airflow.

There are at least 3 layers of material between your ear and the back of your open back headphones, you're not getting cool air in there. There's a thing called layering when you want to conserve heat. You have air pockets between those layers. And that's besides the fact that you are not getting any air circulation trough the back of your headphones unless you direct a fan right in to it

Hifiman said their MDR-R10 clone is better than the original. I can believe it. I was originally concerned newfangled driver tech and modern tuning would neuter the OG R10, but it approaches planar speed and detail, needed if you're already used to planars and electrostats. The earcup shape and design badly needed to be reused and rereleased.

>Scales well with dac and amp
What does that even mean? They're 60 ohm, it's not like you need a super powerful amp for these. And all DACs should sound the same if engineered correctly.
>planar speed and detail
This isn't a thing. The speed of the driver won't alter the sound signature, at most it might result in lower distortion. Planars or electrostats aren't inherently more detailed. Detail is something that purely depends on the frequency response. Chinkfimans usually have a fuckton of treble hence the "detail". Stax also tunes their stuff to be bright and that's why they appear detailed. Apply a negative treble shelf and you'll notice the sensation of detail is gone.
>>106297487

Moondrop's freedsp measures decently and isn't too expensive. You can also save an eq preset to it so it's always applied. Comes in handy sometimes. Downside is you need to install Chinkdrop's awful app to set the EQ.

Then get one of the other ones I listed. I wouldn't really buy anything more expensive than a HE400 from chinkfiman since their stuff isn't durable. I've dropped my LCD-2s a few times and the membrane is still undamaged. Verum One is nice but his return policy is retarded. Maybe try Audeze MM100 if you want something more solid but the stock tuning is pretty shit as expected of Audeze.

anyone with k701/702/etc replace their stock pads with these things? i have to admit i haven't used my k702 in years, as i've spent less and less time on focused listening - in favor of more casual listening (while i'm on the go) with AirPods. bizarely my stock pads had shrunk and deflated for some reason (honestly kind of disappointing considering i paid like $400 for these headphones back in the day). so i'm looking at replacements on amazon and see these real leather (sheepskin) pads are only like $15 more than the velour pads. i'm wondering if they're worth it from a longevity viewpoint

HE400SE is basically the cheapest well performing planar and is better than a lot of Hifiman's more expensive headphones. Has a linear bass response and is low distortion in the bass, like most good planars. HE-R9 isn't even planar magnetic, it's a dynamic driver headphone. A weirdly tuned one, too. Since chinkfiman can't make good closed backs for some reason. But both of those are built like shit and chinkfiman's QC is pretty terrible so it's a lottery whether you'll get a pair that works for longer than a few months.

It's manually tuned. Headphones with effortless positioning and detail tend to be dark: SR-Sigma, MDR-R10, LCD-2, SR-007, MDR-Z1R, SR-001, ESP-950, T50RP Argon. Either get one or continue posting inaudible charts and seething about it.

i got hd 560s a bit more than two years ago, just enough for the warranty to run off and the right side died. not producing any sound
i tried to plug into different port, different cable and it didn't help it was the headphone's fault
is that a normal amount of "longevity"?
used on pc only, havent been dropped
can you recommend me something new?
i like the comfort of the ear pads that the HD 560s had but i want something with a better headband
been thinking/looking at the hd 600 or hd 599
but i dont want to run something with a 3meters long cable that hd 600 have and where i live i cant find a replacement cable locally
the hd 599 are priced pretty much the same as the hd 560s, 10 or so euro difference, so im not sure if i should go for them or get new 560s? the hd 599 headband seems better, but how much of a difference is there when it comes to daily use?
im from europe and i wanna order something locally, i dont want to ship internationally, so stuff like the 6xx and any of the other XXs are not really an option

How the fuck did you kill those so fast? 599 is worse if anything. HD600 is fine but overpriced for the performance you're getting. Aune AR5000 is better imo. And don't bother with looking for replacement cables locally, you'll just buy something overpriced. Sennheiser uses proprietary connectors and all of their cables cost a fuckton and aren't very high quality. There are better and cheaper alternatives online.

Absolute retardation. Either a Sennheiser shill or a retard.
And Sundara are good headphones(shit build quality aside). But I fail to see why you'd buy and amp 3x as expensive as the headphones when you could have gotten better built headphones with that money instead.

They probably have the bass set too quiet. Most music is mastered for ear-raping levels. If you value your hearing but still want balanced sound you need to turn the bass up to compensate because of the equal loudness curve. Distorted bass sounds louder so it's a shitty approximation of this. Also, there's learned behavior like the people who prefer MP3 artifacts because they grew up listening to ancient 128kbps encodes they downloaded from the original Napster. If you don't use IEMs or planars you've probably never heard clean bass.

The XS is
1. Built like shit since most of it is plastic, Sundara is almost entirely metal
2. XS distorts more and resonates more
3. The headband on the XS is uncomfortable as fuck
The only thing XS does better is bass extension. If you want one of the egg shaped chinkfimans at least get the Ananda since it's more comfortable. Still has the same issues XS has for the most part.

>FA-ÎąS22 is an upgraded version of the popular FA-220 scattering line, which uses a large-diameter core Îą-OCC conductor set in a thin insulator to achieve good frequency characteristics and effectively reduce transmission losses. In addition, the outer layer of PVC is equipped with special damping carbon particles to effectively suppress vibration and reduce noise. Furutech's Alpha (Alpha) OCC was discovered by furutech engineers over a long period of time and has very good sound reduction capabilities. Alpha and high purity single crystal copper OCC are made using a special casting process. Unlike regular OFCs, high purity OCCs have almost all micron level impurities removed, are extremely pure, and are cast through Furutech's special unique process.

Nope, if you have atom amp+ then you already own a monstrous amp that can power anything from most power hungry high impedance headphones, to extremely sensitive low power ones without suffering from static noise.
Say if you hypothetically had unlimited money then the only reason for you to buy more amps at that point would be purely for how do they sound with your collection of headphones.
If you are perfectly happy with atoms sound then there's not much point even in doing that.

Requiring some advice since my old headphones died last night and I never got into audiotech 'tism. I have been using the same Marshall Major III ones that I bought 7 years ago.
>Budget
I was considering 100âŽ-250⎠(115 USD-290 USD) but that's not a hard limit.
>Intended use and Kind
- 80% music at home, otherwise travel or gym during which the sound quality doesn't matter to me
- but they shouldn't let too much sound escape or be too noisy from the outside
- ideally not oversized (Sennheiser HD600 from the op would be too big for my taste)
- no preference for any specific kind but it's really important that the earpads are both durable and comfortable after long continuous use and I genuinely mean "long" use there will be times during which they could be worn for more than 55h I have grown used to shifting one pad slightly off the ear, alternating between them both
>Source(s)
- ideally bluetooth but I have a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 interface sitting here if that helps
>Preferred tonal balance/genres
- genuinely all over the place but to narrow it down a bit, I love 80s synth pop a lot, think of 'Souvenirs' by OMD or 'Elegia'
- also a lot of prog rock, Steven Wilson/Porcupine Tree
- and harsh industrial schizo stuff for when you want to lose it after 40 hours of sleep deprivation, like death grips or kfc murder chicks
so, if somehow anyone has a rough idea what kinda headphones would elevate this sort of stuff and would also be comfortable for long wear, I'd be incredibly grateful

My unknowing ass is eyeing the Edifier ES850NB. From reading up on it, seems like a decent all-rounder for long use. Is Edifier a reliable brand?

No point in spending that much on Bluetooth headphone. BT will be always a big bottleneck when it comes to audio quality.
Ask yourself if you really need ANC, cause if you don't then there's plenty of good headphones with BT variant out there.

If you meet this criteria, then yes they can be extremely gud* - with caveat being that they are not universal at all - in some music genres they are unexpectedly awesome, but in some others they are bad.

>Edifier S3 if you can still find one of these at a decent price.
they're 350⎠on amazon, was willing to stretch from 200 to 250 but not to 350
there's a new pair on ebay for 290⎠shipped but that still seems too expensive (they're somewhat cheap used but they're all from japan and i'd get anally ultraraped by the import duties)

You sure you are getting brand new unit, and from amazon warehouse instead of unknown third party seller?
Bezos likes to sneakily give people second hand/returned offers.

What's a reasonably priced amp with decent power? I have a chink XDUOO MT-602, but it stops working randomly when I turn my fan off.
It's capable of a lot of power, and some of my headphones like EQ'd HD700 require a lot of power to drive.

No, the fan is plugged into the same power board as my amp and computer and all that. I had my headphones on my head, turned around to switch my fan off and at that exact moment my sound cut out.

yep
it's edifier's italian storefront too btw, not some third party seller
if you think this is bad wait until you find out how much (((thomann))) charges for shipping and handling, i opted to build my own synth racks instead of buying theirs because it ended up being cheaper in the end despite having to buy a drill

Sounds like your power strip is faulty.
I have one lying around that has two first ports faulty, plugging anything into them shorts the rest of the stuff.

tell me about the yuin g1a & g2a, which one is better and how much better are they vs the ksc75? (which are 30⎠here while the yuins are ~100 and ~50 respectively)
already have an extra pair or two of yaxi pads and headbands in case the yuins need them and i don't mind overpaying even if they aren't twice/thrice as good for the price
