R: Forge comes with ControlNet already baked in, that's why my extension won't install.
It's built into Forge's core, no extension needed.

I think using WAN or Qwen ruined SDXL for me. I can't stop noticing the color and pattern bleed now.
Whatever color palette the character has, the whole background and lighting gets contaminated by it. A person in a blue coat makes the whole world blue. It's really distracting once you start looking for it.

NAI handles artist styles that I like better than any of the open models I've messed with recently (Which is admittedly not a lot been busy). I think their batching for different sizes and not cropping datasets makes all the difference.
I've also been too lazy to really learn to use cozy effectively. I played with a1111 a LOT in the 1.5 mix days, and was able to get really good results with some effort, but NAI I can just tune the artist params a bit to get a style blend I like.
Sometimes you have to fight it a bit. Some artists are more or less prone to horny depending on what you're trying to do. But it's overall easier for when I just want to fuck around with an idea.

NAI nails the SOVL factor it has great dynamic poses and character personality.
Fed it with "Jalter watering black flowers" with quality tags and it perfectly captured her character.

Where NAI falls short (for me) is artistic refinement. It gets you 90% there but lacks fine control over the art style. This is where SDXL inpainting shines, I can refine that NAI gen to match my exact artistic vision.

Left image is straight NAI output, right is after SDXL inpainting.
Not saying you can't achieve this with NAI alone, but it becomes a game of prompt roulette versus having direct control over the style you want.

When they switched the default sampler to Euler Anccestral it broke the easy ability to fiddle minimally with an image with a locked seed. May not actually be the samplers fault but from what I've seen from older SD anything anccestral can end up with radically different results with small prompt changes.

NAI is basically just an SDXL finetune at the end of the day. Any checkpoint maker could probably replicate their quality once they figure out NAI's approach. The key advantage is that NAI's model understands natural language prompts really well instead of just booru tags. Our SDXL checkpoints could reach that level too if devs weren't sloppy with caption quality, they need to use proper LLMs instead of WaifuTagger and Joycaption. Those might work for NSFW due to LLM censorship issues, but for SFW there are better options.

That hasn't been true since v4
v3 was on the SDXL arch, but 4 and 4.5 were trained from scratch and probably with arch differences.

Which details what they did to SDXL for 3.

They opensourced v2 weights which was basically what had leaked back in the 1.5 days that led to all the good anime mixes and the "anything" line of models.

If the released v3 it would still be more consistent than a lot of the open models. They do a better job of both tagging and general data curration, but the size based batching detailed in that paper above I think is one of the big deals and I don't think anyone in oss has replicated it.

Good info anon, but I think it still has structural problems like SDXL, sometimes extra/missing limbs or fingers shows me the structure might be good but not THAT superior to SDXL. If SD3.5 XL is open source maybe they could reverse engineer it and build their own model with that structure. Still yeah, dataset size, good tagging, and they can even hire artists to fill dataset gaps if they want makes the real difference.

This is fairly rare, and hard to completely eliminate from a pure diffusion model.
You usually see them when you're doing something weird like picrel.

Human artists fuck up anatomy too, and sometimes you want that. It's in the training set. You're going to get some incoherence, it's kind of amazing the things it is able to get right. Like gravity in picrel is mostly doing what it's supposed to.

One of the Marniefags, for Marnie I set young, teen, slim body, but this is very random. what really makes the difference is downloading a bunch of Loras with the same body type as the character you want to generate. For example, download a bunch of Loras from Blue Archive and put two or three of them.

I'm running Nova-Anime-XL v10, which I think is an Illustrious finetune. No Lora, but I usually try different combinations of author tags. The ones for official illustrators usually work well: tomose shunsaku, mizuki makoto, sheya, hong (white spider), minaba hideo, and others.
And then a x1.5 hires pass at the end.

before you get too impressed with the "consistency" anons are getting out of gacha characters, double check there isn't already a danbooru tag for the exact event outfit they're wearing. It's cheating. What you see in his post is called Sable Mage, the other poster has been using Spring Casual. That character has literally dozens of tagged outfits. Combined with the fact most illustrious models already get really stable output seed to seed once you go over about 25 tags, there's nothing to be impressed by.

Why is this? Is it just really uncreative? I've noticed I have to put an awful lot of tags to get detailed/crowded backgrounds. It is very hesitant to add anything I didn't explicitly prompt for. That's a large part of why I like Noob better, it will not go against your tags but will also add a lot of other stuff and you can reroll or neg from there.

You just go to danbooru and search for "spoken_*" tags. I imagine "spoken_expression" is the one used here, along with the specific emotion tag.

I'm kinda new to the whole stable diffusion thing, but I see people making gens that have tons of loras stacked on top of each other, especially artist/style loras. When I've tried this same approach I often get worse gens, the more loras I stack the more I have to play with the weights and generate more images to get something that looks good.

So my question is, do these people who are stacking 3, 4, 5 style loras on top of each other actually know what they're doing, or just throwing shit together to see if it works?

Probably throwing shit together. 90% of Civit or any online generator are mindless sloppers, some algorithms have more luck and others less in this AI image generation thing. I as a Lora Slopper use 3 at most or if I use more I distribute them and use them at different steps with the Lora Ctrl extension from ReForge.

Important, it's not recommended to use more than 2 specific Loras that modify the same attribute, for example character or style or lineart or something because that bloating happens in the gens. Although I repeat this is kind of a roulette, currently my favorite prompt is rescued from CivitAI from a Japanese gooner who put a culture broth in his prompts that makes pretty good personas.

- make sure they don't oppose or cancel out the artist styles or attributes
(This one's kind of personal for me to set a limit) that the total value of the sum of the weights be 1 in total. Example 3 Loras:
Lora 1: 0.33
Lora 2: 0.33
Lora 3: 0.33

Example 2 loras:
Lora 1: 0.5
Lora 2: 0.5

Example 4 loras, each one with 0.25

Obviously all these suggestions or rules will be broken but it's more so you have a parameter of where to start.

Tags overload the tokens, are more specific and controllable

Loras overload the VRAM, are more global and depend on the quality of the Lora.

Mutsuki, Akari and Serina are pretty much free, they're 2* and 1* students so if you pull a few times you'll likely have them no matter what. you can also check if you have Chise, Tsubaki, Momoi (my racist wife), Hanako, who are also easy to get and pretty good. there are other good ones in the Event Recap (Maid Yuzu and Cheer Squad Hibiki should be your priority here) for free (just need to finish the stories)

I generate an image, upscale by 2x, and then run a 2nd pass at .3 denoise and do the Adetailer stuff, before downscaling back to the original resolution. Is that the way to do it?

I only upscale at 1.5x and after that it depends on the gen. Sometimes the result after upscale is good enough. Anything that's realistic/semi-realistic in style I usually run GFPGAN to fix the face but for stylized anime it doesn't work so well. If the face needs work I'll inpaint it. Sometimes it's a whole face sometimes it's some feature of it. Denoise is adjusted depending on the situation. Sometimes it's nice to have it high to make a new face. Sometimes I'll have it low and use Adetailer. It depends.

I don't know what's the "right" way but this has worked for me so far. At the end of the day it's all sloppa so don't spend too much time on a single image.

That's how you learn and it's part of the fun.

For the post you pointed at; eyes you can definitely get there with inpainting and/or Adetailer. There's also loras for eyes you can mix in when you do that. Higher upscales of course help when adding detail to the eyes. I stick to 1.5x due to my poorPC. In my experience a good combo of checkpoint and lora and prompt goes a long way for that crisp and clean look though sometimes it's the upscale that brings it together.
