Well, one of two things are going to happen. The other technical expert is going to be pleasantly surprised that I'm very thorough with my work and gave a very clear path for the product or she's going to be confused and rip me a new one over something I could have easily explained. Though I'm generally pessimistic about job outlook in general, I'm optimistic about whatever job I do land being from anywhere at all: I didn't expect to get my internship being from a no-name school but managed to get it, even if I fumbled it after.

i believe many companies are purely living on past merits and it will in some industries last a couple more years or potentially decades
the company i work for makes construction equipment and the EnE architecture is "upgraded" like every 8-10 years or so
currently rolling out a new one since a few years back
the next generation that will start rolling out in early 2030 will be the last that some oldfags that actually know their stuff will be involved in before retirement hits
at that point i dont see my company actually developing this themselves but instead outsourcing going full autosar

simply going from single-core to multi-core is a massive leap in expected technical knowledge
not to mention all the stuff relating to security (secure boot, key management, mixing safety and QM software) or telematics (remote software updates, digital twin) etc.
my team of 12 people could manage this in time for the deadline but accounting for maintenance of two EnE generations, le scaled agile framework, and management ambition/involvement it just wont fly

expecting management to bring in """"""competence"""""" from india as they always seem to want
>we have a lot of competence in india
>our colleagues in india have been involved heavily in the past with success (i.e. we did it and they took credit)
thanks but no thanks

Has anyone here ever been given a job/gig/paid project by their parents or family acquaintances or your parent's friends? This is like supposed to be an easy way to escape going insane from being idle, but it always goes wrong in my case.

I worked as a general affair staff but quit after 4 months because the job was so un-tech like and i was sick of the high pace and unbearable tempo, nobody ever bothered to teach me anything and each time i try to finish something, it gets written off.

Once a mom's colleague asked me to build a bus ticketing web and app and the deal failed because the company was having trouble with permit or whatever and decide to focus on that first despite me and my buddies already write down the specifications and budget plan and negotiated for like a month

Then another colleague of her asked me to build a Google Drive-like to store and organize bajillion company files, but again the deal failed apart because there was so much red paper involved

Now a dad's colleague asked me to build a company website.

Seems like these gigs are the real kind of projects that motivates and lit a fire under my ass rather than building toy projects nobody gave a shit about. The problem is, even doing these stuff doesn't guarantee immediate money, so i don't know. Maybe I'm just being picky.

live coding is easily the most retarded thing there is for tech interviews, you almost never have to solve a random puzzle on a 1 hour or 2 hour time limit while at work, studying for it is an entirely different skill than knowing programming (so much so that people have to dedicate time to just livecoding practice AWAY from learning their language) and most of the time any real problem you will ever have while working as a developper will be solved in a few hours, maybe even a work day after consulting documentation, reading manuals, even consulting ai and stack overflow most of which is not allowed in these live coding sessions, why the fuck do they make us do something that will never EVER happen at the job you're applying to and isn't even a transferrable skill. its so retarded.

anyway i just applied to a job that basically asked me if im an expert on x programming language, i said yes because of course but ive only ever done kiddy scripts and those have taken me a few days to do on my own with heavy reliance on other people online to finish my projects, how can i prepare for the eventual expert-level live coding questions they'll give me?

What is the logic behind intentionally making all tech products worse over time? They could have just not-paid the developers all that time to work on it, or keep a minimal staff to maintain things. Why put money into making it all worse all the time when they could have been directing that effort somewhere else?

It sounds like maybe monopolies are actually the way to go? I'm predisposed and biased against them because of the culture around the economy and capitalism, but it's become very clear that the only way to maintain a product well is to have a monopoly and be a private company. sure there are issues that come with that, but they are clearly not as bad for the end user as what comes from business graduate's idea of product competition and being exclusively beholden to tricking the market into line go up when you don't actually know how to improve your product or make another one.

They're not a monopoly though, they are still competing, they just monopolize areas. if you just had a single dominant product like steam, or formerly xerox, or microsoft up until apple started taking market share on desktops, sure it's a bit of a price gouging situation maybe, but they sit pretty and un"""innovative""" for decades at a time and shit just works. Then you have microsoft competing to be more like apple and then you just have 2 operating systems that are shitty at everything instead of one that was generally good.

Every "improvement" to software products that are in a remotely competitive space made in the past 15 years has been a net negative annoyance.

Exactly. When a company feels they NEED to be productive, what happens is they put features nobody wants into products that were already good, and when nobody adopts them they put them IN THE WAY of the features people are using.
Microsoft was perfectly fine pre-competition. Oracle is shit, but not because it wasn't a boring an stable product. There's a spectrum between what Oracle was like, and what companies are like now, and at this point being closer to the way Oracle was seems like a win for the consumer.

Note that this also applies to public companies. They would also be forced into the productivity for productivity's sake treadmill that non-monopolies are forced into.

I can’t decide if should admit that or not since I might get a poly years from now for top secret. I was thinking of minimizing it and saying I tried molly and acid with my now wife at burning man and rolled with her at my apartment once versus I railed k off a strangers titties at BM and rode a bike around the playa and then took liquid lsd from a stranger and ended on a sunrise set art car with Tycho himself. For PDE and you're at a big tech company, expect starting at $120k+ base. Senior can go $160k+ base. If you're at a smaller company you're looking at $50k-$60k starting. $80k+ with some experience. Companies really undervalue MEs in general and right now everyone across the board is looking for a unicorn that does not exist. Here's a kicker, most companies have horrible practices that does not scale so if you try to make a jump you'll either A) get filtered out because you have bad practices or B) the company has poor practices and they reject due to you having good practices. Also, the good ol' boy system runs rampant.

On the PhD stuff, I honestly don't know what to go for. Semis don't interest me at all so that probably doesn't help and I don't feel like putting my life on pause for another 3-4 years.

NAS goes offline because his co-owner had Xfinity install a new modem?

Then, there's even the oversight that I ignored which was that it required DDNS, so someone would have to manually renew certificates.

There is some build up time to saturation which is about 15 years before with magazines, news articles and many other advert methods from the companies themselves.

What happens at saturation point is that the chaff is removed from the pipelines, interviews and entry level positions. All that is left afterwards are those who like the job. The days of easy money and passion projects is over.

A couple months ago MITRE almost completely killed the CVE program because of lack of funding. Even though every modern anti-virus and security team relies on it, they couldn't find private donors when the US government stopped paying.

There they just teach you how to build shit, but not really how it works. In the 13 years I've been working, I've only worked with 2 people who ever had a university degree. It's easy to quantify the work of a nurse just by their hours regardless of bureaucratical shenanigans. But, with tech work, it's harder because not all of the work can easily be quantified. There are too many lazy tech workers taking advantage of the intangible nature of their work, so companies purge them wholesale in order trim the fat, accepting the loss of good employees. They then hire new workers because new workers are less likely to be lazy since they haven't yet adapted to their new workplace. This would keep the remaining workers on their toes and hopefully discourage them from slacking off.

You need to be honest with PR comments. Otherwise, mistakes will be repeated. Blameless culture in tech companies is what's causing software to become worse over time. Incompetent devs continue to ride off the coattails of competent devs with asymmetrical burden of responsibility and without learning from their mistakes. Eventually, the competent devs leave in frustration.

i have a new billion dollar idea.

0s and 1s is still just binary. thats what i was looking at, something to compress even further.

so binary is a series of numbers powered by an electrical current, like ticker tape being fed - or just a motherboard for regular PCs- into the cpu, or gpu with new gpus idc, to read, spit out onto a computer screen, right?

so the mainframe could feed the binary data of this super-compressed collection of images (into the kBs) into the electricals to transfer the data. in this case its a fridge freezer motor and its output is the dissipation of heat.

the goal would be to compress "that" to store it more effectively... the cold, not binary. the less heat in the the end means all the more compression for the data, as its converting the binary -> cold...

who's building this with me?

I think thissecurity people come from at least 2 different places: CS/programmers (even the self-taught ones) and networking people. I think the "programmer" type usually look for the root cause of vulnerabilities and are able to think in wider context of applications to exploit the issues, while people who have background in networking usually just throw shit at things to see if it sticks.
these days you have cybersec degrees though, so I'm not sure how much things have changed.

So she brought on another guy to learn some of my tasks and act as a redundancy. They did not listen to any of my feedback about what the job requires, or what kind of person they should hire.

Today, I told my "backup" to double click an icon and he responded "double click with the left mouse button or the right?" Jesus.
