I want to think that its not us millennials couldnt get used to "new" tech and formats. Its we didnt want to, because they were and still are objectively inferior. Just fucking bloatware wherever you look, laggy, but most of all doesnt even respect the user choices. Sorry for not being ok with some jeets algorithm holding my hand 24/7. Its like telling manual no-electronic-aids sports car drivers that they "illiterate" or unskilled for refusing to drive newer crap. Both work almost as well anyway.

The only possible argument you have for saying you don't need to know how to use a file system is if you ONLY use your smartphone or tablet and even then storing things the way they do is massively inconvenient.

Also, how can you not understand a file system. I learned how to navigate one when I was in Kingergarten just clicking around my parents desktop. It's not hard.

>outdated file system
You can call file systems outdated once you come up with a better alternative, at the moment you have absolutely none so shut the fuck up.
I'm not even saying traditional file systems are perfects, I can think about improvements like adding tag sets and therefore search by tag set, by union of tag sets, etc, or like adding Plan 9 style union directory mounts, but even then you are in the end still managing files, which is why I say these are improvements, NOT alternatives.
You pretend you are beyond files but in fact you're not, you zoomers just gave up on file management alltogether and dump all files in a single bucket, this is in every way worse than managing files even just with the traditional method of hierarchical directories, and in the end you're still stuck with files.
In short you provide no alternatives to files so you have no right to call them outdated, you're just not able to do things properly because you're a retard.

Anonymous No.106352039
>>106351899
>most recently used
Which doesn't scale, even for personal files.
I can access any file in few clicks, any file, because I have them properly organized in directories, meanwhile whenever a normalfag (zoomer or boomer) needs to find anything from the medium to long past in their files (yeah because they are still files no matter how much you delude yourself of the opposite), like a photo, they take 10 minutes of scrolling to find it if they find it at all, even worse if it's on something like Instagram or Telegram.
It's a matter of fact that finding files in an organized directory hierarchy that uses a common naming scheme will perform better, you just don't know how to use it, actually you don't even know that you don't know, literally the Dunning-Kruger effect.
>letting megacorp AI scanning all your files
Disgusting.
And also not really a solution even if we ignore all the mistakes AI, because if you don't categorize them yourself you won't know which categories the AI has made, you'll have to guess what's inside the category and lot of categories created by the AI might be irrelevant garbage to you personally, the point is that you first organize the files inside your head, then on the file system, it's not something you can delegate to an AI, otherwise you just won't know where the files is or which tags the file has.

Millenials were the most tech literate because common devices didn't gatekeep.

Learning the file system of a smart phone for example is almost pointless to the typical end user unless the phone is rooted because everything worth knowing the location of is blocked.

Millenials learned on pcs that let you go to any file on a pc as a standard freedom.

"tech" (consoomer hardware computers) is inherently unnatural and the only way to learn how to use it is to read some manuals and try stuff out. retards of all ages have the boneheaded assumption that anyone young should be able to intuitively understand "tech" which is as dumb as saying that every person born in 1433 England should be a good archer or that every person born in 1989 USA necessarily knows how to drive.

this is what I don't get about the "lol zoomers cant files cuz phone" meme -- phones still have normal file systems, and even if you never touch it by mounting it on a PC, you still have folders for photos, music, videos, etc. Even if you just use the basic "photos" "app" you can still create and manipulate folders to sort your photos.

im in the military of my country where everyone has to pass a weapons qualification yearly. even among a volunteer force, 99% of people can't shoot for shit and the vast majority of "soldiers" can't remember which way the magazine goes in from year to year.

and i have a bow myself; they're just as easy to use as rifles and I would wager a national training program for them would have similar results of "most people on paper can use one but might nock the arrow the wrong way a couple times until they get yelled at once or twice and remember how to not fuck it up"

>>106353362
>The idiots are Boomers and Zoomers,
i will agree with this one, I see the most (and dumbest) IT complaints from those groups. however computers remain unnatural constructs and the only reason the middle generations seem good with them is because training was prolific and the devices themselves were in a magic time of being primitive enough that you need to know what you're doing to do anything useful, but they're still easy enough (after reading a couple pages of the manual) that basically anyone can get going easily.

It's like saying "Why do you need to know how to cut with a knife to be a chef?"
Ok maybe you don't absolutely have to, but it's going to be far far harder if you don't know how to and learning is not difficult at all
Stats have shown that every generation generally gets smarter than the previous gen. Gen Z has been the first gen where this isn't true and are on general testing worse than Millenials did. 2 things
>1: people born in the 1990s are not millennials. millennials in the US are people who grew up in the time where the internet was becoming widespread but not yet omnipresent. so it's really just people born in the 80s
>2: tech literacy wasn't widespread even among millennials. before the internet was ubiquitous, you were seen as a giant loser faggot knowing anything how about how tech works
that said the tech literacy of the top 5-20% of people has gone down so fucking much it's crazy. I teach CS (systems engineering) at an R1 and the number of students (typically juniors/seniors, so 20-22 years old) who don't know basic shit like how to navigate directories is insane.

While you can do it (I had to check my phone to verify), it's not "natural" or part of the intended workflow at all. A phone with the "make folder" command disabled would loose zero functionality for 99.9% of users. The larger problem is that software is becoming opaque. You're actively discouraged and prevented from tinkering with it. Have you seen the default right-click on Windows 11? Fuck.

I have to do stupid voodo shit to prevent the web browser from auto-updating plugins. Not to mention you can't get a browser that remembers more than 90 days of history without some shitty awkward plugin. My point is, I can do the steps to get this basic functionality back because I'm technically literate. Because I grew up with systems that allowed you to tinker. They just didn't give a fuck. You wanted to install Linkin_park.exe? Go right ahead. Maybe you'll learn something. The user is king. Computer aynt your nanny. Zoom-zooms don't have these opportunities.

People knowing their way around tech in the late 90s, early 2000s was largely a matter of necessity. To install some of the jank people used back then you needed to know some basic command line inputs. People stopped learning to do that when tech started to become more consumer friendly and easy to use. Dunno why this is a surprise. Even as a milliennial most of my cohort had no interest in learning computers beyond the bare basics needed to use them and learning the tech stuff was reserved for nerds who had a specific interest in that stuff, not really any different to now. >The other day he even asked me for help with updating drivers. In windows. Where all you have to do is open device manager and click on each driver to update it.
Arguably, this shit somewhat obscure and the fact that you and I and a few others understands it is due to experience dealing with Windows, not something a normoid could be expected to have.
A better system would be Settings > Windows Update having a flat list of items each with buttons that says "update" or "look for updates" or some shit, plus messages that indicates certain items can/should be updated.
It's absurd and shit, but how can you expect a normoid (who sees a computer as a means to an end, not something to be tinkered with for its own sake) to:
- Know that devmgmt.msc ("device manager") is a thing you can use.
- Know how to navigate and interpret the tree view you are presented with.
- Know how right click on the correct item and know that "update driver" does in fact updates the driver.
When people are in the mindset of wanting to get some shit done and move on, they won't pay attention to how the system they have to go through works.

Someone once brought me a (stolen) iPhone with passcode and asked me to reflash its OS. Not that I expected it'd achieve anything, but I could still get some bucks for flashing it.
Apparently I had to install iTunes after some scam app they told me to use didn't work.
Apparently iTunes is one of those "Windows Apps" garbage that is a just convoluted way of running an .exe file.
Since I had throughoutly disabled Windows Update on my PC, I had to brick my C:\Program Files\WindowsApps folders to get iTunes to launch. Even then, it didn't work.
I don't give a fuck about why it didn't work, I don't want to reverse engineer Windows Apps to figure out this shit. I only wanted cash and call it a day.

Gen X here. Neither of your generations are "tech literate." You've never done boolean algebra. You don't know what a NAND gate is. You haven't created your own assembly language. You've never built your own compiler or operating system. Knowing how to navigate a file system is no more tech literate than knowing how to swipe tiktoks.
I'm not even trying to be condescending to you, I'm just stating facts. You can learn how to be tech literate for free, very easily. Let me show you the way. I led you to the water, now drink it:

I do but thats because i took a semester of Electrical Engineering. most of my IT bros know about that stuff and honestly the only people i meet who are "tech workers" yet don't have an at least basic understanding of electronics are code monkeys.

File browsers are literally displaying the file system structures, unlike retarded things like galleries, some of which have no consequences on the file system itself.
>A folder is not the file system.
Directories are a structure defined in the file system. You only see properties, metadata, files, folders and devices (files) instead of inodes, blocks, and added data that create those structures/things.

One group of them wrote a whole language before discovering a linked list and how their new language was unable to safely produce a doubly linked list. That was hilarious.

>And Chromebooks, actually. Not much you can do on a PC that isn't covered by these three.
You can't even do something as basic as manage a music library without a computer. The Music app on iOS doesn't let you add music to it, only sync music from iTunes running on a computer. And I'm pretty sure Chrome OS doesn't have any way to manage a music library either. Let's face it, all these modern devices are designed to take away as much agency as possible from the user and make them reliant on subscription services for everything that used to be free and easy to do yourself.
