Literally the only thing I miss about radio and tv was the anticipation of waiting for a show I enjoy.
>friday night has my favorite radio show
>buy cassette tapes couple days before
>an hour before the show prepare ghettoblaster, tapes for recording, snacks and comics to read while listening to the radio show
>enjoy the literally perfect radio night every week

It was so insanely comfy.
Waiting for the thing was part of the experience.

multi screen setup
you put your tv further away, instead of using brackets to stack your monitors up high
also its practical when you want to have some readout always on screen and are busy doing other stuff
on your computer or otherwise
the big format comes in handy.
and ofc, entertainment. jewtube/vidya/movies

I get cable with my internet for free and this bundle was from 2004 and it is cheaper to keep cable than it is to break the bundle and pay current price for everything. I just use it to watch PBS. I don't pay for the set top box though cause I dont pay for extra channels so I'm just getting air rebroadcasted.
I watched the Ryder cup one weekend that was fun.

The upshot of broadcast is no one knows what you're watching unless you plug in the ratings box. Radio is also fun to listen too in my area because there are alot of religious crazies right around NPR and PBS and a university radio station where idiots argue about the price of gas. FM is good fun alongside TV

also, unless your tv is connected to the outside world, you can monitor your network activity through your computer
because thats the pathway its gonna have to take to call home

yeah but theres ways that you coudl have been dodged
you never know
you basically have a minix OS running in your cpu, invisible to your normal os
the gpu can communicate weird shit directly to it
this can be dealt with through hardware so even a close inspection of the drivers will yield nothing
only if you duplex the signals to/from your monitor, and you analyze the waveform you can be 100% sure nothing fishy was gtoing on... while you were looking.

no 100% solution exists.
if you want certainty, you have to assume everything is pozzed, and act accordingly
nothing is beyond their reach- but they dont have infinite resources
how i see things the only way to evade them is to be too low priority for them to allocate said resources to you

TV device yes, but no cable. I use FireStick + Youtube app maybe half an hour in the evening and that's about it.

I got a 55 incher for sim racing but transitioned to VR headset, so prob gonna re-sell that one sooner or later. And an old Samsung LED (pre smart era) with the Firestick. Might wanna get rid of that one sooner or later as well since it's probably a massive electricity hog given its age.

it's the same with music and everything else really, before when you had to wait/go to a different place/exert specific effort to get something it'd feel much better in the end, like having 10 songs downloaded on your phone, some of which a friend had sent you through bluetooth lol, and you'd be happy with that
or going to your favourite takeout place being an actual event by itself, instead of just ordering the thing to be delivered to your home

but I suppose in the end it may be good that tv has become slop, that way it's so much easier to break free of

I use my TV for streaming HDR off of my jellyfin server because HDR is way better on it than on my monitors. That does require me to want to watch something though, and that's not that frequent these days. My mother pays for netflix and I set up the network at her house to tunnel her TV through my network so we can share netflix, but there's just.... fucking nothing on there. The best stuff on netflix is almost universally stuff not made by netflix, and it's not there permanently. Meanwhile my nas never loses anything unless I want it gone.

I haven't watched broadcast TV in over a decade. Too many ads, and the bundling makes the price not worth it. It's not that I can't afford it, but comcast wants 140 a month for an internet package that's worse than my 50 dollar fiber plan, and they want 150 a month as an intro rate for the full cable package. In total that's getting around the price to lease a base model care... which is fucking absurd. Or I can just torrent stuff for a couple of dollars a month in electricity to keep my server on.

It's fucking maddening. We had people over for a hybrid Late Christmas + New Years party, 2 years ago and a good portion of the older crowd wanted to wait inside and watch the broadcasts of Times Square. I bought a blacklight that fits in my floodlight a few years ago, and last year we gave the kids a bunch of glow in the dark foam LARP swords/shields and a glow in the dark basketball and let them loose out by the garage. Imagine having your grandkids and grand nieces/nephews having a blast hooting and hollering while my brother who is everyone's favorite uncle minds a grill and makes them all the hotdogs, brats, chicken, burgers, veggies, and corn on the cob they can eat. Now imagine that instead of throwing ball or even just sitting there and taking pictures while nursing a sherry, all you want to do is watch people on TV that are most likely wearing soiled diapers because they've been standing in one place for 12 hours pretending to have fun. What the fuck is wrong with you?

I've already told my cousins and such that I'm not doing the big event again this year even though we've done it for 7 of the last 9 (admittedly much smaller scale for the 2 covid years). We might invite a couple of my cousins over, and a few people on the wife's side of the family moved a couple hours away recently so we might have them over because her family is significantly less insane than mine, but I just cannot bring myself to do large events anymore, let alone put my wife through it. 2 years ago she needed damn near a week to properly unwind because 5 hours of clipped comments subtly implying that we weren't doing well enough in life really ate at her.

That's nostalgia, every year was meaningfully different and felt significant when you're young.
Then you finish your education, enter the wageslave life and suddenly it all becomes a blur and you feel like all you're doing is waiting for the weekend to come around.

Nostalgia aside, at least where I lived that time period was the start of shitty reality TV, and the general vibe shifted to more crass, low-brow entertainment.
MTV's heyday was passing and generally by the mid to late 2000s music became way too rap-focused.
I kept watching Discovery channel shows like Mythbusters, but I just pirated them.

I still have one, but I haven't turned it on since July. I'm not even sure the antenna cable is plugged.
Teletext is still comfy as fuck, though.

I didn't have one for over a decade. Then I bought one and converted my PC into an HTPC. Feels comfy to watch kino on a bigger screen.

And let me guess, you sit over 10 hours in the same chair hunching over your desk? Im nearing 40, I need to sit in a couch or spin on a gym bike while consooming entertainment.

I only listen to audiobooks - while lifting or driving. Reading is a waste of time.

>That's nostalgia
Yeah but doesn't mean you can't keep continuing having new nostalgia. I still have an old flat screen tv next to my monitor and still leave it on for background noises when I'm doing something and I've still been reminiscing about stuff that was on from the 2010's while I was doing stuff on my PC. I've even been nostalgic from stuff from the pandemic lockdowns. If I don't like a network then I just change the channel. There's other shit out there that isn't trash tv.

Then again I have satellite which is not as shit as cable but still pretty shit. Just have more verity.

Yeah, married man with children here. No tv in our house, not a disciple thing or anything like that, we owned one but never used it, maybe a couple times to play some emulators by connecting the laptop, it just sat there unused taking up space so we gave it away. Now we either use the living room computer or me and the wife watch on a laptop when the kids are not around.

Based. I'm a control nazi with my kids so we just have one TV in the living room, and my main PC lives in the living room between the TV and the couch so I can half ass monitor the kids when they play on the computer. My wife and I just use my laptop in the bedroom. I wouldn't even have a TV if it weren't for the occasional movie night.

My only TV is a fuckhuge CRT with only an ota converter connected to it in case I absolutely need to catch something on a local broadcast channel.
Other than that I only use it for retro games and old movies, and only occasionally bring over my HTPC to watch newer stuff on it.

I have 2 tv's but no cable or streaming. I just use them as big monitors so I can browse the web and watch youtube on a tv, with a keyboard on my lap and a mouse next to me in the sofa.
I've had this kind of setup way before 'smart' tv's and even before flat screens on a crt tv. It's way better then so called smart tv.
