Why aren't you complaining about the two tone F keys as well, then.
>>106927167
The rules are different for the f-row and the numpad. On the f-row, alternating clusters make them easier to distinguish visually, and it's just an old convention which is by this point well entrenched. The physical separation from the alpha cluster is what makes it acceptable that it plays by different rules, but if some take issue with this I understand that point of view, obviously.
On the numpad, the numbers are distinct from operators, which are treated as they would work on e.g. a calculator, which is ofc more comparable to mods than to alphas

But, neither are you. You excuse non mod keys being colored like mod keys when they're on the numpad, and you excuse mod keys being colored like alpha keys when they're in the F row.
If your complaint was "I prefer the aesthetics when tilde pipe and space aren't mod colored", then that would've been fine. Instead you tried to make it into a functional issue, which is retarded. I prefer when they're mod colored, makes the board look like a smiley face.

I will leave it to neutral third parties to make up their minds for themselves who is the idiot in this exchange.
The F-row is separate from the main cluster, and they're literally function keys, not alphanumerics. So breaking them up both spacing-wise and visually makes sense, since having a line of 12 very similar looking keys in a row would lead to the user searching for the right key, which would be less efficient.
In the main cluster mods being one color, and the alphanumerics being another makes sense.
If you want a mod colored tilde or pipe key just for visual symmetry that's fine, but it breaks the convention of why those keys are colored the way they are.

Maybe next GMK should start making mod color 1 in all their sets so that these "aesthetic symmetry enjoyers" can break the unity of the numrow in order to perfectly mirror the color of 2u backspace. I wonder if that's a bridge too far even for them. Although I think Gay-for-GMK Tommy Two-Intros would do it in a heartbeat

>The alphas have all sorts of colours.
They all, as far as I can tell, indicate functionality. Dark for what we usually call mods, light for alphas, and a middle gray helps to see the shape of the numpad in the alphas (which, as a hidden-numpad-65% user, I completely understand.) The mod color dot in the numpad is an interesting difference, which does make sense, since it's a bit of an edge case (Is it modifying the inputs that follow, or placing a dot character in the number? Their interpretation makes sense.)

There always is. Although some have under-key lighting for lock indicators which can only be disabled with a firmware change (e.g., Keychron)
As for switches, unless you really want it to "sound better" I wouldn't change much. MX Blue has not many fans here but it does do one thing uniquely well and that's its particular sort of tactility which is sharp and small and right near the actuation point. This makes it feel OK for gaming in a way that the other more tactile clickies out there don't.
I'd just get something like this:
https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/products/filco-majestouch-3-tkl?variant=47608032035116
Empty plastic case is good for clickies (not stuffed full of foam). Nothing too fancy here. Double shot PBT keycaps, looks simple but attractive, probably will last a good long time. If $115 is too much money, they have a less popular colorway on sale dirt cheap:
https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/products/filco-majestouch-2sc-tkl?variant=47607774085420
But if black's what you want, it might be better to spend more and get what you'll be happier with.
If you want to try other clickies with a better reputation among keyboard enthusiast types, you could check out 8bitdo's keyboards, which have Kailh Box Whites that use a different click mechanism. They're a little bit gamers○y though

$55 + $28 shipping to Texas, assuming no duties charged along the way (big assumption), leaves only $17 for keycaps and switches. That's not even enough to buy 90 Gateron Milky Yellows.
So at a minimum he's going ~$20 over budget, and if he wants actually nice keycaps he's probably going $40+ over budget. And this is assuming he's not buying lube for the stabilizers, or a switch/keycap puller, which together probably add another $10.

the tl;dr if you look past the Reddit hysterics is that they are kind of a smallish company in China and it's not feasible for them to be good at doing international returns, and for cultural reasons it's not very important to them to take some extra losses to keep up good reputation. So if you get a faulty product, which does happen unfortunately, it might be a pain in the ass to return it and they'll make you eat some of the costs.
If you want something they're selling, buy it through a local vendor who will accept your returns and be much less painful to deal with. E.g. MechanicalKeyboards.com if you're in the US. If you buy from Vortex directly, accept that you're taking a risk.

These boards are a cool novelty, but their proprietary config software for layout editing blows (especially since it loves to corrupt layout profiles and macros, and bafflingly lacks some features). If someone can hack these with QMK/VIA firmware, they'd be immediately making these boards far better. They can get fucked for that $500 68-key board they just revealed today though (even if it's fully made of aluminum alloy).

Nintendo did take legal action against them in the late 2010s, when their SNES-style controllers were originally much more blatant visual ripoffs of actual SNES controller designs (they probably crossed the line by making the logo the same font and style as the SNES controller logo). This is hard for some people to admit but the best layouts often have some redundancies, because one or the other option is better depending on the context. It doesn't feel as "elegant" but ease of use is the most important thing.
E.g. I have a redundancy on my 65%, which is that I can get escape by pressing tilde with either of my function layer keys, one of which is on the right and one is bottom-left. (They go to different layers, but it's esc in both.) One combination is easier when I'm using both hands, and doesn't involve any awkward hand movement. The other can be done one-handed while I'm using the mouse. Having two options works best.
(I have tilde rather than escape because I like not being able to accidentally press escape while typing 1 or hitting tab.)
In the case of 96%, arrows in the numpad area are useful for when you're using multiple kinds of navigation inputs, because your fingers are in position to use all of them; e.g. while you're selecting blocks of text (end, shift, home, up, ctrl-right, etc). But the dedicated arrows may be simpler when you're doing basic navigation that only requires the arrows, because you don't have to check whether num lock is on. They work even when an application doesn't recognize numpad arrow inputs (some shitty applications treat it as numbers all the time), and they work when you're using the numpad for numbers.

if it takes the designer and their chosen manufacturer a year to make a small amount of what it takes someone else a month or so to mass produce maybe the GB model should be done away with. There are some really nice dye sub PBT sets out there now that feel nicer than the originals sometimes. It's time to stop pretending that these caps cost $200+ because of tooling or availability. You're not picking between giving money to a big corporation and saving money to get the knock off, you're choosing not to give money to someone who loves this hobby just like you. Even if the set isn't available as in-stock, clones reduce the chance of further rounds of the set, and generally reduce the desire for designers to design new sets.
Clones damage the hobby in a real way. But there's a whole lot of inexpensive and high value keycaps out there - buy those, not clones.

If a cheap Clone manufacturer/vendor offers a product anywhere in the world, 24 x 7, purchasable from the convenience of your personal computer, and the legal vendor says the product has its Group Buy ended, probably wait more than 2-6 months if bought, actually takes more than a year and hope that it delivers and wouldn't get cancelled out of nowhere, and can only be purchased again at another Group Buy round which will be ambiguous when, then the cheap clones from Taobao/AliExpress/Shopee/Amazon is more valuable.
>>106938093
Look.... buy your clones. I don't care one way or the other. It's almost as if you're trying to convince yourself here.... not me LOL. Clones are shit. You'll not change my mind. This is not something that makes the hobby elitist, so stop playing that card. There's a TON of stuff that's not a clone you can buy. If you like a designer's work soooo much, that you MUST have it at any cost... including buying counterfeit versions of it, then that designer deserves to be paid for the work. If you disagree, you're selfish and only motivated by your own needs, and not the needs of others.

You keep denying all of this as a "quality issue" yet disregard how certain manufacturers have become better over the years at producing convincing GMK clones. You're just a bitch in sheep's clothing at this point who tries to stir arguments at first but can't refute anything if pressured too much.
You think anyone wanting the GMK colors in low price are "selfish"? Bro you're a fucking asshole of a human being if you believe in that copium if you're gonna generalize the majority of lower-waged keyboard builders like that. Because not everyone you tried to generalize aren't as bad as you try you demonize with. There are those who are from 3rd World Countries that are interested in this hobby but never had the chance to get their salary to go up higher to go buy OG kits from GMK. You're quick to judge all of this as the fault of those poorer than you who can't get an F1-8X and those sweet GMK groupbuy kits when it comes to the clones, yet you underestimated how this keyboard hobby is becoming bigger and more accessible than you think. Again, this community is not for the bourgeois, its for everybody, and expect clones to become better over time to accommodate easier access to keyboard building as a whole.
You're going to live to see this elitist hobby die, bitch. AI will make any design possible better than community subtards, and GMK will never be remembered by anyone anymore :) sucks to know your overpriced plastic just got devalued hard huh?
Every keycap has a visible sprue mark on its top wall.

GMK sets really have devolved into 'pick a color' and ride the wave of unlimited demand. Ford makes red vehicles with brown (or whatever) interiors and so does GM and VW and Toyota and every other auto manufacturer. From a 'design' perspective, I don't see keycap designs as being any different in most cases.

Intellectual property isn't real property, it is a temporary monopoly granted by the government on the theory that it will lead to more innovation if people have a period of time to exclusively benefit from the innovation.
IMO, if you make a product with a limited-time run (e.g. GB), and you don't continue to make it or have plans for another run... then morally speaking you're forfeiting your IP privileges.
if you do a GB and fuxk off, why should you get to stop other people from making the thing you now are refusing/unable to make? In that case you're going against the entire purpose of IP, and the original goal of IP protection would be better served by allowing clones.
In other words... if I am unable to buy a product because no more of them exist, then how am I hurting the designer by buying a clone? They already lost my business by not having a more continuous supply [ which is not necessarily a criticism of them, and yes I understand why they might not, but if they're not actively planning additional production runs then they shouldn't be surprised if people buy clones instead of just... lusting after their unobtainable product]
end of conversation.

your hand is mirrored.
your index finger is 1(4,7), your middle finger is 2(5,8), ring finger 3(6,9). having to use your ring finger for 1 is unnatural. especially when you're used to it with your a normal numpad. you want the fingers to exactly match. just how a manual shift cars are mirrored in the uk vs us.

ok I'll tell you why, because a left handed person shouldn't be "used to right hand numpad" in the first place. they should use something that should be normal for left hand use, consider someone using a keyboard for the first time as a general example. they have no right hand numpad notion.

No its just a normal stabilizer design but LPBF print from nickel silicone bronze, they're super tight tolerance and after tumble and dry film they're smoother than anything else. I have not tried his stabilizers
I guess you gave me an idea, that all switch housings and sliders should be made like this but it would just be thousands of dollars for a keyboard compared to mold injected plastic....

holy fuck CONSOOM
A fren(gf) got a keychron and I liked it, but didn't want to spend that money on it yet. So I got a cheapo chink magnetic kb, and liked it, but I was obviously disappointed about some things, in this one specially the fact that the spacebar stabilizers are pretty shit, and since I don't hit it dead center it starts to pop sideways... But I liked the experience, so I'm trying a "better" chink brand now, Aula? let's see how it goes.
I still haven't found something I quite like on par with my cherry keyboard, the only problem is that it's fuckhuge and the frame is absolute dogshit.

nope. it's with no electric contact. parts still move, else you wouldn't be able to press the switch down.
I'll get a HE keyb next, but there's one downside, you can't have tactile switches since you don't really have control over the range of the press. once the bump gives it goes down. so you cannot really use the whole travel for analog purposes.
but other than the tactile issue, it's clearly the superior option, at least for me. ideally it would support both classical and magnetic switches. which seems to be possible with tmr sensors
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=edLfxQKgQtk
but not all companies seem to do it like this, keychron opted just for tmr switches in their ceramic keyb see picrel

As a tactile enjoyer, I don't really like melodics either. To be honest, I don't think any of the modern tactiles/clickies are particularly good, they're all too harsh in their tactility. If you compare them to classic clicky hallmarks like Blue Alps / Buckling Spring, modern switches are absurdly tactile by comparison. The event on Blue Alps / Buckling Spring is pretty subtle. Noticeable, but subtle. I've even hear some people describe capacitive buckling spring as clicky linears. So, yeah, I agree, I would rather type on a modern linear than a modern clicky or tactile switch.

Feedback on linears are already good enough that I type faster, more consistently and confidently, and that makes it enjoyable. Compare this to my Melodics, where the click doesn't help me one bit unless I press my fingers down dead centre on the keycaps. If I don't do that, I don't feel the stupid click perfectly and then I end up skipping the next key. The upstroke is also beastly compared to linears.
As a linear convert, what helped me find responsiveness and muh tactility in linears was trying out different switches and plates and getting a taste of fancy keyboards. My Intro S100s completely shit on my modded M5, and that's because different switches feel way different across different plates. It is absolutely perfect, and I wouldn't change a thing about it.
Clickies need to be deeper without being louder and be capable of being felt more subtly, I never used old school clickies like IBM so I can't compare but these modern-day tactiles are just dumpster fires if you actually use your keyboard to type and not just play gaymes.
Also, the new MX2As are positively mushy compared to the meta linears or tactiles like HMX and Gatreon. It is completely over for Cherry.

Why make it sound impossible? Literally slap some artisan and made in Italy sticker on it and you're probably good enough to have a running three people business. Ironically now might be the best time to do so given one might be able to snatch most of Cherry's old factory. Heck, make a whole retro "scratchy" line out of that, while you're toying with new products.

You are completely dismissing the importance of the membrane keyboard by brushing off anglos like that. Membranes were an achievement in durability and affordablity. It is still the bar in which all keyboards are judged against this day.
do people actually find it hard to type on split keyboards. The non ortholiner layout where the keys are in the exact same place. My current ghetto split keyboard setup is just two regular keyboards plugged into my computer and I put a hand on each one. Trying to upgrade to a real one but they're all so expensive ;\

>>106952562
Not him, but part of the reason split keebs are good is you can have a wide stance and can remove any wrist deviation. 2 full-size walmart keyboards can accomplish the same thing for a fraction of the price of an actual split keeb at the cost of using a lot of desk space and looking stupid

If it wasn't pre-lubed like this, I would have stuck with the alexotos method but really a lot of switches come pre-lubed these days so might as well do the full job properly.

that's inductive tech, kinda new, their software sucks balls (from what I know) so cannot use all the tricks that you can with keychron or wooting analog switches. I wouldn't get the x at this point. plus I think it's plastic or some shit, and expensive for what it is.
the inductive switches need the coils built into the pcb under the switch, so no room for classical switches. fun65 has both tmr and classical switches.

Should I get one of those USB extender hubs like my wireless mouse has where the 2.4 dongle rests in it and when its time to charge you simply unplug it from the hub which is on the corner of the desk and into the keyboard within like 3 seconds? I don't wanna fiddle with cables too much every time its time to charge back of my PC is a mess and the cable will stick out if it goes to the front

Got the replacement in the mail today. It's an Aula WIN68HE MAX or something like that.
It's noticeably better, although the springs are super soft, I prefer the extra stiffness of the cherry blues. I do miss the tactile feel of the blues, but I guess that point is moot with a magnetic switch that records through the whole actuation length.
It comes prelubed for pleasure, but some keys are not quite there, so I will take it appart and relube. I have a set of keycaps coming in too.
