Reposting from last thread-
I had an interview with the recruiter, an interview with two L2 analysts, and a final interview with 2 managers. Each interview was about a week apart from each other and the final interview was 11 days ago. I emailed the recruiter 2 days ago asking if there were any updates and got no reply.
Am I getting ghosted? Do larger companies actually do that? Should I email the recruiter again on Monday?
All interviews felt like they went well, especially the second one. Never experienced this before and I'm starting to get a little nervous about the silence.

Oh, yeah I would never give up coffee. I don't understand why you people do it. Like... sure, it's a caffeine addiction, but there really aren't any negatives to it, other than the need to keep consuming caffeine. As long as you're not taking in too much sugar with it (like energy drinks or starbucks crap), it's fine.
But, my head hurts from a blunt force impact last weekend. It was fine for a while, but finally started hurting today. Probably not good. The best part is no one in the office asked about the bandages or bruising, not even my manager.

Three juniors have rotated into my team this year, they're all 100% (and I do mean 100%) depending on AI to do their job. It's a really worrying thing because of all the "invisible damage" that goes out, looks good in appearance but the most insidious bugs go through. One of the juniors is stuck in a sort of hamster wheel where he's constantly hotfixing the stuff he already worked on a few months prior.

Are you seeing consistent usage of design principles? My experience is seeing code that is overly verbose and concrete despite some abstractions and reusable components already present in the codebase, and inconsistency such that some churned out code seems to follow fundamental principles whereas some can just blatantly violate them. This is assuming the code is vanilla stuff that isn't concerned with specific domains / libraries that are a bit out of the way of mainstream code, at which point it begins to hallucinate complete crap.

It's usually large companies that do that. You can e-mail again on Monday but it's pretty common to hear back a week or two after they said they would. You'll probably get a response this upcoming week but being ghosted or getting a reply weeks late is unfortunately the norm.

There's so many jobs that'll do this to you. If you're putting out fires and working with an obscure technology most of the time, it's a dead-end. By "obscure technology" I don't mean something that's niche but ubiquitous across a certain sector, I'm talking about some gay UI library for a .NET application that ought to have been retired years ago.

That's fair. Well I've worked in the industry for 14 years now and had tons of managers, so here are some shitty manager archetypes:

> The Micro Manager
Everyone knows about this one. But ultimately what sucks about this kind of boss is a fundamental lack of trust. They don't trust you to be an adult. They don't trust your code. They don't trust you to get your shit done. Which is why they end up in every little meeting, sticking their finger on the scale in places it doesn't belong, still trying to play dev in management. Protip: you should never, EVER see your manager turn up in a PR (yes I had a boss like this).

> The Anger Management Manager
I honestly don't know how these people end up in management. They freak out, they're quick to anger, they take everything personally. They can't keep their cool under pressure. Most of the time the anger isn't directed towards you necessarily, but it grinds you down constantly having to walk on eggshells around them.

> The "Cool" Manager
At first it seems like nothing's wrong. Your manager's laid back, trusts you to get your job done, and deals with the crap umbrella stuff. But then the cracks start to show. You realize he's *too* nice. He's conflict avoidant. Afraid of confrontation. He won't talk to the guy on your team who is literally working on a side hustle project at work and doesn't do anything. When there's conflict on the team, he freezes in place. You don't want a cool manager. You want a boss that doesn't play favorites.

> The Absent Manager
This manager is playing the "how much can I get away with not working" game, just like we all are in corporate America. Except he's taking it a little too far. Constant OOO, WFH, never around, never available for approvals or what not when needed. I actually had one of these bosses, and he ended up getting directly fired by the AVP for just completely checking out.

cont.
Anonymous No.107010618 [Report] >>107010638
>>107010572
>you should never, EVER see your manager turn up in a PR
my manager shows up in PRs all the time, but he's not a micromanager at all. I don't really get this one. I'm in HW though not SW, so maybe it's different. The manager is more like the lead dev since he wrote the majority of the original code, so he knows most of the edge cases and whatnot
Anonymous No.107010629 [Report]
>>107010572

> The Good Ol Boys Manager
It's a big club, and you ain't in it. This manager will instantly zero in on whoever aligns with them and form an inner circle clique on the team. And then the passive aggressive bullshit starts. You find out that you weren't invited to a critical meeting despite being a senior or lead. You're never allowed to touch the important or "sexy" work, it's always reserved for the Kool Kids. You start hearing them laughing over by the bosses' desk, then everyone looks right at you. If you ever find yourself in this position, GTFO and find another team. It never gets better. ESPECIALLY if one or more of the people involved are women.

> The Dumbass Manager
And last but not least, everyone's favorite, the incompetent manager. How do you know if you have an incompetent manager? If you're a senior or lead on the team, that's easy, because *you're* already the manager! If your manager is literally so bad at their job they can't do basic tasks like 1:1s, performance evals, or budgeting, you may find yourself having managerial work delegated to you as an engineer. Another Protip: If you ever find yourself in this position, RUN. Run as fast and as far as you can. All your technical skills will atrophy, you'll slowly become absorbed into the political business PM DPO Certified Agile Scrum blob and before you know it you'll find yourself in meetings with suits talking about Q3 budgets and headcount.
