FAQ:
>How do I activate Windows?
HWID2 generates and registers a permanent legitimate license on MS's activation servers
github.com/massgravel/Microsoft-Activation-Scripts
Usage: paste this into Powershell, run.
irm https://get.activated.win | iex

>and Office?
Same link, select Ohook option
You can also use Office.com if your needs are very minimal
or try OnlyOffice/LibreOffice and set it to save in MSOffice file formats

>What version should I install?
>W10 Enterprise IoT LTSC 2021

Wait for IoT LTSC 2027 if you can

>Installing apps on LTSC

IIRC you just put the youtube link in the network file dialog? Though youtube's probably done some kind of stupid shit to the backend that VLC haven't combated yet.

I was just about to say I only just checked the VLC pages, it's the .lua scripts. The VLC github only just removed the youtube lua like two weeks ago so it only stopped working recently (Although I remember trying to play youtube video in VLC from months ago and it still didn't work so who knows).

>External fans just aren't very effective.
That's true, it wasn't that ideal and the temperature drop wasn't as significant as I hoped, but it was at least less risky/dangerous. In the end, I just mostly decided to avoid playing anything too taxing and stuck to mid-spec stuff.
>No, your laptop is designed for sudden losses of power since it's expected to run out of power due to being battery powered. What would actually damage it would be a power SURGE, which surge protectors are for.
To be specific, I sincerely believe it was more of a surge than a blackout, it wasn't random and I knew what caused it (although I wasn't related to the cause).
>And some multi outlet devices LOOK like surge protectors but aren't.
Gonna have to buy one then, I just had a regular power-strip which is what the laptop was attached to.
Also worth noting I was unaware about battery thresholds needing to be a thing until recently, so that may have contributed to any potential damage done to the battery since I kept it 100% charged.
I kinda fucked things up royally with my ignorance, but it's a learning experience I suppose.
>You could build yourself a good miniITX system
I am considering it, and honestly I wish I had known about it years ago, but unfortunately now I have budget issues, but maybe during Christmas I may have the chance.

Out of curiosity, do you have any tips I mentioned for trying to recover the files from and/or for knowing what was going on with my External HDD that I mentioned in the original post (>>107112952)? I won't get around to it until after I solve the crashing problem, but the most odd thing was Recuva crashing rather than the computer once the computer actually stopped crashing.
Either way, thanks for all the tips and everyone else that gave me advice. I'll try all these suggestions today and see what ends up happening. Fingers crossed it goes well.

If you want the very latest Photoshop you can use either m0nkrus's releases or crack modern CC versions of Photoshop using GenP, while also blocking Adobe telemetry addresses via a-dove-is-dumb.
You can also get Photoshop CS6 from 1337x which works totally fine still.

I just installed W10 Enterprise IoT LTSC 2021 and have 2 issues (or they might be the same issue, not sure)
First of all, I have to unblock every single file manually that I download. I've never had that on a windows install. Is there any way I can just nuke the setting to never ask/always unblock everything by default?
Second, after installation, some programs will simply not open. I assume it's somehow tied to the first issue, but could be separate. This only affects certain programs, others work fine. In my case it's ImageGlass. I've tried installing it to different drives and issue persists.
I open it, admin or no, lil loading circle next to my mouse for a bit, then nothing happens.
I've tried Checkdisk and SFC /SCANNOW and neither fixed the problem
I'm thinking it's some security issue interrupting me? But I've disabled most of windows defender and tried starting it with still no progress

It's a command line utility you access via pressing shift+f10 in the install USB environment to access a command line. It's the most clean way to remove all partitioning data from a drive making it seem completely brand new to the Windows installer leading to a fully functional normal install.

The gamebar has retarded finnish words for it which dont fit the ui. Amazing I know. So can you change gamebar language? Well, it uses the whatever the system language is.
If I use english as system language then I have 2 keyboard layouts that randomly enable each other and my keyboard produces wrong letters.
But if I only have finnish language then the game bar words dont fit.
But if I have english language my keyboard layout is wrong
But I cant change the language for gamebar from gamebar settings, it uses the system settings

According to their documentation it doesn't actually do anything meaningful it just does some things like set your wallpaper and default browser then runs winutil (which also doesn't do any meaningful debloating) and then Win11Debloat which has options to uninstall default apps.

IMO its better to avoid all this debloat bloat and first decide what you actually want and then either uninstall it with DISM (if its a preinstalled app) or run some targeted tool like an edge uninstaller or ShutUp10++ or so.

If you are on Windows 10 you can in-place upgrade to LTSC. I did this (the day Win10 support ended) and it worked perfectly for me, of course I made a backup of my disk first.

Let me think about that one. Your best bet for something similar is to download tiny11builder and modify it for 10.

If you want the easy way out just install LTSC. Debloating is quite easy and there's MS documentation on the tools and components but its not fire and forget and one size fits all like these iso projects treat it. I dont think there's a decent paste on it tho you'll just have to ask here.

iot ltsc doesn't need tpm. Even if you did get an edition like Pro which requires it, you can get around it with Rufus which has an option to bypass tpm check when creating the windows bootable drive, or using an unattended installer (which is what Rufus also does for you under the hood) with https://schneegans.de/windows/unattend-generator/

rounded corners existed since XP, 11's rounded corners doesn't even feel much more pronounced than Vista/7's. The main difference is that windows were surrounded by a frame, while in 11 they don't have any frame and the actual window gets rounded

I feel people just got used to the Metro style of 8/10 so the change was massive. Of course there's a lot else that got rounded like dialogs and the context menu, but I feel it's a bit overhated just because it's W11

Then when I closed Audacity it went back to normal (not full)
I assume some temporary file was created on the C drive, and that's what clogged it up

Do you bros trust ventoy? It seems like such a useful piece of software, to be able to store multiple LTS isos on it for future upgrades, to keep installers of shit like firefox ESR or AMD drivers on it for future reinstalls or updates or new computers. But I worry about it being chinese spyware because there's supposed proprietary blobs on github. Realistically what are the odds of these actually being dangerous? It has a lot of stars on github, gets shilled on youtube, and I know so many tech people even irl that use it. Did you fall for the ventoy meme? Was it worth it?

It went under attack around the time that xz backdoor thing was nipped in the bud, so a racist tirade against chinese open source programs was rife, including Ventoy. It's still getting updated and people are still using it fine, so it just seems like it was caught in that original scare. I use it and it's wonderfully useful.

I'm running into a weird issue where I can't find the memory card files for an emulator in the file browser normally (even when turning on show hidden files), but when I use the memory cards selector in the emulator they show up in that window. I thought I could just copy them elsewhere from there but then I get an error message stating "This is no longer located in *folder*. Verify the item's location and try again"
I tried looking around online but can't find anything related to it

I had similar problem with a thinclient win7 rufus install(I moved usb stick to non-usb 3 port and got lucky).
Not so lucky here or have to do some coaxing from the lappy bios.

If it can't figure shit out, installer will ask you to browse to location of driver(and be cryptic about it and call it "missing cd/dvd driver", but it's usb controller). So you have to have it extracted on stick beforehand or slipstreamed into ISO.

Ah of course. ePSXe is trying to save files to an admin owned directory but is only running as a regular user so Windows will redirect its changes to %LOCALAPPDATA%\VirtualStore (which is owned by the current user) and combine the two for ePSXe.
It has been around since Vista so legacy applications that don't expect UAC would still tend to work.

that's a 20 year old problem. back in the day, many programs would put their data in their own program files folder, such as save games, since in win9x, there was no such thing as permissions or users, any program could write anywhere. with vista (and xp if you use a limited account by default), programs run as your user couldn't write to the program files folder, so for compatibility purposes, windows silently redirects those to a folder in your user's home folder

Which edition of windows are you using? Home doesn't have a group policy editor, only Pro and higher editions do.
BUT, if you are using Pro or higher, then turning off auto restarts due to Windows Updates, you need to:
1. ENABLE the group policy Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Update\Manage end user experience\Configure Automatic Updates and set the value to 2 (Notify before downloading and installing any updates)
2. ENABLE the group policy Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Update\Legacy Policies\No auto-restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates installations

>CRU also doesn't seems to work
With CRU you should be able to compare the frame timings and maybe just copy the 1080/60 configuration from your brothers PC. Stopping at 59.97 and not 60 is a classic bandwidth (detection) issue which you can probably improve by reducing the porches. But without knowing what that TV can do it will be a fair bit of trial and error compared to just copying a good config from the other PC.
>One response I had from some forum was that my TV actually supports 1080i, not 1080p, and that it could be the cause
May be but 1080i is almost half the bandwidth of 1080p and HDMI 1.0 does support 60Hz 1080p. If that was the case you should be able to set your laptop to output 1080i and get the full 60Hz, though 59.97Hz 1080p is much more preferable.

On second thought, I'm not sure if Home policies would match the other Windows editions, because there may be some policies missing from Home, or even if there is, I'm not sure if they would be honored.
I say that because there is a regedit equivalent to a policy for Telemetry that would outright be ignored based on the windows edition you would have. However, it's good to just give it a try and see if Windows would auto restart or not

The vast majority of base group policies just set registry entries. They are self managing but when you're only maintaining (reset at every restart/logon, also e.g. if you change the location of Documents it will auto move the current contents to the new location) a single install that's not a big deal.

He has been using Word for years, but sometime recently for whatever reason he can't anymore. Presumably no valid license and that shit is expensive as fuck, too expensive for a pensioner anyway.
I showed him, and made it as easy as possible, how to use Online Office (365 Online or whatever) which works, but is still a bit clunky, needlessly complex for an old man like him.
How hard would it be to "spoof" a license for Office so he could continue to use what he knows? I know next to nothing about Office anymore - I haven't used it since I was in school and only use LaTeX nowadays.
