I'm reading this book, and it's really interesting, everything is super informative, but it fails to show a clear step-by-step process.
How do you guys usually draw poses?

This is what I’ve understood so far:
Start with an outline sketch (gesture)
Add a rough sketch (basic details)
Finish the drawing (add 3D form and anatomy)

I've seen some people use a mannequin first and then slowly add details until the figure is complete. I'm curious, how do you guys do it?

Also, are there any other good books you'd recommend? I want to learn cel-shaded rendering too, that would be really helpful.

Yeah that's kind of how I do it. For awhile I was messing up the pose . So i did a preliminary sketch of the pose first, which seems to work better

Gay bros don't care about stuff like that, so it's either a w*man or a troon, I'd bet oj a feminist fem*id because they hate "male gaze" with a burning passion.

You're arguing with children. That's why they can't imagine someone being sick of seeing anime pinups unless they're an SJW. Of course they're going to want to draw coom. I started out copying hentai I was into. At that age your horniness is the strongest drive you got. If you can hook it into working on a skill rather than just beating your cock until it's raw. Find a place that skews older if you don't like it

Anon, the truth is that there's no "manga female figure." There's just the female figure, and you are probably better off learning it from western sources like Loomis and Hamm, which are the same books recommended by many mangaka. Hamm in particular has lots of step-by-step instructions. There are, of course, different ways of proportioning and stylizing the figure, but again, there isn't one "manga" figure — it varies from one artist to the next. The face is where it's more important to study Japanese artists if you want to draw in the manga style. FWIW, the relationship between the nose and mouth on that cover image seems off.

Oh hell nah, brother. I really don’t want to spend more time on observational drawing. I get that it’s a useful skill and all, but it’s just annoying. I want to draw cute anime girls with good proportions, animate them, make them blink, breathe, move, and none of that is taught in those books. Not even Loomis covers that stuff. They don’t teach construction, animation, or how to put figures in perspective. I mean, they’re fine if you just want to draw thousands of poses from photos, but what if you want to create something from your imagination?

That's why practicing drawing from memory is so important. And why having a lot of experience and visual library is crucial for drawing from imagination.
Yeah, talented people can bypass this. And using references is easier. But that doesn't apply to you.

So you're saying I need to spend 20 years learning how to render realistic human photos at a 1:1 ratio before I can start drawing from imagination? Bro, that’s crazy. I’d rather read what Japanese artists are doing and learn their workflow than waste more time drawing Loomis heads, fr.

Anon, Loomis and Hamm aren't about observational drawing (except in the sense that almost every book recommends you observe what you want to draw). Have you even looked at these books? They absolutely teach construction, and Loomis has a whole section on putting figures in perspective. There's nothing to do with drawing from photos. Animation is a whole other topic. I have the Tezuka School of Animation book, and that's a good primer, but it's not about drawing cute girls specifically. You have to use your brain to apply the principles to your subject matter of choice.

I get your point, guys. In the end, I think it doesn’t really matter whether you learn from Japanese, Chinese, or Korean artists, the method is mostly the same: draw a gesture, build a mannequin, add details and anatomy, and there’s your drawing. Then repeat that thousands of times to create a frame-by-frame animation. I think the truly important part is the illustration style and the visual library you start building from the beginning.

Also, and I can't stress this enough, once you've got some mileage find a live drawing session near you. Nothing else will help you learn to draw the human body like seeing a person in actual 3D space and interpreting that onto the page. There are some that are classes with instructors, but some are just a session with a model where everybody does their own thing for a few hours and you don't have to interact with anyone if you don't want to. I'm fortunate where I could go to 3 or 4 different ones each week near me, but hopefully you can l find at least one.

I usually draw the angle and position of the shoulders and hips first, then connect them with the general action line of the spine. Then I add the head.
After that I place the hands, and connect them to the shoulder with arms that make sense in an IK sense.
Then it's just filling out the form.
I also try to map out my shading with this really sketchy nice pencil brush I have as I fill out the form before I add details. It helps me get a clearer handle on the figure.
I still mess up frequently on little details, though, so maybe it's not the best approach.
