It's been forever since I played MWO, but this is what I remember.

You could never go wrong with clan mechs. Sometimes a select lucky few IS mechs could be equals or even superior, but it was a revolving door and any patch could kill your mech forever since their viability was ENTIRELY dependent upon arbitrary whims of quirks instead of anything fundamental about IS equipment.
