He was never super into creating art, but he said he used to doodle back in his teens.

So, the other day, Anon told me I should study values a little more to continue my learning. Until today, I've taken the time to put more effort into it (4/4). This is what I've been doing for the last two weeks. I could really use some feedback. What should I focus on more to improve? What would I naturally pursue from here on out to continue improving? I don't really want to be professional; it's just a hobby. But I'd also like to be able to improve the realism in my drawings with a bit of my own style (if I ever develop my own). So far I've only drawn on paper with pencils, I have a 12.4'' Samsung tablet with an S-pen, yes I would like, at some point, to do digital art, but in my (maybe stupid) idea I think I should learn to draw correctly with a pencil and then move on to digital art, should I do it this way or should I practice both at the same time? it's pretty normal if you work on a huge canvas, one of the reasons people do that is so you can cram in more detail thanks to the bigger resolution and then resize the finished product so the far away version becomes the default. I wouldn't worry about it much as a beginner.

Your eyes are a bit big, but it could be your style and you're doing pretty well. Your art looks lumpy too might want to practice line confidence.

I think you're in the right direction right now by doing many studies/sketches at once and moving on even if they aren't perfect. This way you can track progress easier and iterate.

my very rough idea of what I want to draw like is a mix of early shoujo manga and also mamoru nagano, because I think his fashion and early mecha designs are super cool. gothicmade doesn't do it for me though
I'm working on a visual novel so I also need to practice drawing landscapes and architecture which I've mostly neglected up until now

Oh the redline here was not to dictate you on what to draw, more to show you where to improve on your proportions/spacing.

I used the nose as a reference for lining up my tracing of the original as I thought it was a focal point and oyu can see that the tilt of the eyes is a little bit wrong in comparison to the mouth but you got the mouth generally correct.

The "scary" feeling of the blocked-out drawing is lost in the redline but that's why you should take it with a grain of salt . yours has the essense of the goofiness because yours is rounder. Mine is just there show you where your placements are wrong. use fur like lines instead of hard outlines. Fluffiness can be represented in different ways but I would recommend in this case since you're using (digital) pencil, i would use short varied strokes kinda like hatching. picrel.

I'm just blocking out the original image in general forms too. I wouldn't worry about making it look too much like mine. I don't know how I would draw him any better than you have since I don't draw animals often :') sorry..

Keep the sparkle in the eye but draw the shape of the sparkle first before filling in the eye.

Try to work on analyzing shapes. In the ref, the thigh creates an almost conical shape, but in yours it’s a wider and thick shape. Try identifying the major, larger shapes in the ref, draw those shapes, and then add details

I really like a lot about Bridgman's blocky simplifications but when it comes to his hands and joints it can be a bit much. I was admittedly also rushing through these a bit. While intimidating copying the hands was actually pretty fun.

once you lightly sketched, not pressing the paper like a caveman, you can draw more normal and consistent lines. try sketching with a different grip first of all further away from the tip of your pencil. then obviously you take your time and try to do it a little more clean, like birdstacy does
