I stuck this in /beg/ but they aren't interested (read:able) to give advice.
what's a good way of making this face less flat without overstyling it? I think I could've thrown some highlights on the right side of his head, but what else could help with that? Shadows on the temples?

It's the colors, the cliche blue and orange is used a lot in AI because how well it makes everything look. That and it's a well constructed painting with a realistic style. Congrats.

It comes off as very purposeless. I get no indication of who this generic white woman is, what is the context, why is this important. Is she sitting by a fire? Why is the light so yellow? How did she find herself in this gaping blue void? Are we stuck in bluespace too? Where did her clothes go? You can ask all these questions, but it doesn't feel like you're meant to. But if you don't, you're not left with a whole lot.

It just doesn't really make sense beyond the concept of 'picture of woman'. And it does that well I guess, but the concept itself is pretty boring. And it's uncanny if you try to delve into it further. It feels random.

This works better. It's clearly a pinup, the outfit and pose has a good amount of visual interest. I get a better sense that there were some wheels turning in the head of the artist and there was a goal being worked toward here. (Ignoring that this is probably a study, let's pretend you came up with the whole concept if it is)

You don't have to go toward pinups if you don't want, but your art does need a defined purpose. Drawing random shit you don't care about will always look uncanny and unappealing.

no it doesn't. You can achieve depth without adding layers of context, story and narrative, especially in portrait. Personally im of the opinion that defining "purpose" worsens the outcome and results in the work being forced and unauthentic.

Not sure if this is a proper thread but is related to me getting back into drawing which even drawing traditionally requires me to use software to get it looking decent on a computer.

Is there a way to use clip studio paint offline? I have the latest version but I want to turn my computer offline for a while so I get less distracted. I wish I knew that before purchasing it but I just assumed perpetual license meant actually owning it.

(Related to the image but any tips on practicing symmetry would also be appreciated)
