Dads, I need some advice. I've been trying new rendering techniques but everything looks kinda garbage to me and it's pretty far from how I want my art to look. The problem is, I don't really know what kind of brushwork/rendering style I want. There's so many artists I like with all different styles that I like and when I try to combine those styles it looks like slop. Maybe it's just my skill level :(

Do you guys think I should focus on studying just one type of art or study everything I like? Also any good excercises for improving brushwork?

I tried compiling some art that I like and categorising it based on the brushwork style. There seems to be 4 categories that I like:
- Abstract painterly (like craig mullins, yuming li). Lots of edge and brush variation and rarely uses lineart.
- A sort of painterly but cleaner style that uses textured brushes and usually you can see the brushstrokes. Theres usually some sort of lineart
- Very cleanly rendered stuff that uses airbrush and has very few visible brushstrokes. The lighting seems to be a bit flatter for stuff like this and it seems to be gently coloured in lineart.
- Pen and ink style rendering, where the forms are described with lines rather than edges.
Interestingly, the more abstract the brushwork is, the more 'serious' the art feels. Alot of the cleaner stuff I like is basically goonslop artists. Makes me wonder if I genuinely like the clean look or just like decently rendered ass.

I tried to paint 3 apples using the first 3 styles. I don't know why but it felt really uncomfortable, even though I've painted fruit before. It's alot worse than the fruits I drew a few years ago. I found the painterly style was the most forgiving. The airbrushing was the most uncomfortable and I couldn't control it at all, it looks like a flat mess to me. The in between is closest to how I draw usually I think, but I sometimes add texture with lines like in the 4th style. I think all three apples are seriously needing improvement so I might just need to keep grinding fundies before bothering with this style study stuff.

Sorry for such a long post.

TLDR: The brushwork doesn't matter if you can't draw or paint to begin with.

Accidentally came upon this thread so I'll drop a trvke you won't hear on this board often.

There's no way to draw le fundies detached from an artstyle. When you practice "anatomy" or insert other buzzwords, you can draw it in a cringe style you invent as you go or study from someone who already mastered drawing and made art using that knowledge and experience.

You like CSR? His early work is a little too disproportionate for my taste but when his Hex Maniac pic dropper around 2019 I think he really came into his own cummercially and artistically. His newer work has really nice rendering and composition finesse which give the girls butts he draw a really nice boost.

Int is close, as i like to play int+fth or int+dex the most, but i dont like ranged spells. What are your favourite weapons from different games? I'm kinda curious about something and that tierlist just gave me an idea, for all dads willing to share their username can you give examples of artwork(s)/artists you love? I want to see what made you guys draw what you draw and it'll be fun having the thread full of cool art. If you REALLY don't wanna say who you are it's fine but i'd personally love to look at your art along with what you posted so i can really see the connections (no matter how small).

I personally love Toriyama's post dragon ball artwork, The chibi look appeals to me and i love how simple and 3 dimensional it looks if that makes sense. I actually like Kaneko's art for similar reasons (the depth the rendering gives) in addition to that there's also an air of divinity he gives his characters, I specifically love the piece I posted with the 4 archangels. I also love art from old rpgs, they're cozy and really tell you a lot about characters through their designs; If i had to pick one it would probably be chrono cross, the entire game is honestly beautiful and the pre-rendered backgrounds are the best i've seen, the character art is also great my personal favourite being lynx (the big furry dude in black, picrel). There are more examples but i feel like the blogpost went on for way too long.

I think your general shape language would be a giveaway, and how you draw faces especially. I enjoy your sharp hair and jaws a lot as an example.
I understand my placement, i think my art is somewhat recognizable because of the same brush i use for everything, the 3 characters i hyperfixate on, and the colours i tend to use. But if one would force me to switch mediums and draw another subject, i dont think it would translate that well, as i struggle with the most basic of anatomy, and drawing feels more like trying to find something. instead of being able to put down what i think. I think being recognizable between mediums is nice, and i think you are doing a good job there, being able to capture the same characters in pixelart, digital drawings and your traditional sketches.

Hmm, I've read that a very common theory has to do with cold, places in which it snowed had to "problem solve" far more often, to survive through the winter, so this required civility among different tribes/families, and planning for storing food, which selects for both behaviors, higher IQs and less aggressiveness.
Obviously, this would also explain the lighter skin color.


But it could indeed be that there's a gene that we are unaware of what it does, but unknown to us its associated with "meekness" or "civility", and this also leads to the color of the skin.
Why I suggest this is that we know that things in dogs, or foxes, like "floppy ears" are correlated with domestication, skin color could be associated in the same with with humans.
