Dads, I need some advice. I've been trying new rendering techniques but everything looks kinda garbage to me and it's pretty far from how I want my art to look. The problem is, I don't really know what kind of brushwork/rendering style I want. There's so many artists I like with all different styles that I like and when I try to combine those styles it looks like slop. Maybe it's just my skill level :(

Do you guys think I should focus on studying just one type of art or study everything I like? Also any good excercises for improving brushwork?

I tried compiling some art that I like and categorising it based on the brushwork style. There seems to be 4 categories that I like:
- Abstract painterly (like craig mullins, yuming li). Lots of edge and brush variation and rarely uses lineart.
- A sort of painterly but cleaner style that uses textured brushes and usually you can see the brushstrokes. Theres usually some sort of lineart
- Very cleanly rendered stuff that uses airbrush and has very few visible brushstrokes. The lighting seems to be a bit flatter for stuff like this and it seems to be gently coloured in lineart.
- Pen and ink style rendering, where the forms are described with lines rather than edges.
Interestingly, the more abstract the brushwork is, the more 'serious' the art feels. Alot of the cleaner stuff I like is basically goonslop artists. Makes me wonder if I genuinely like the clean look or just like decently rendered ass.

I tried to paint 3 apples using the first 3 styles. I don't know why but it felt really uncomfortable, even though I've painted fruit before. It's alot worse than the fruits I drew a few years ago. I found the painterly style was the most forgiving. The airbrushing was the most uncomfortable and I couldn't control it at all, it looks like a flat mess to me. The in between is closest to how I draw usually I think, but I sometimes add texture with lines like in the 4th style. I think all three apples are seriously needing improvement so I might just need to keep grinding fundies before bothering with this style study stuff.

Sorry for such a long post.

TLDR: The brushwork doesn't matter if you can't draw or paint to begin with.

Accidentally came upon this thread so I'll drop a trvke you won't hear on this board often.

There's no way to draw le fundies detached from an artstyle. When you practice "anatomy" or insert other buzzwords, you can draw it in a cringe style you invent as you go or study from someone who already mastered drawing and made art using that knowledge and experience.

You like CSR? His early work is a little too disproportionate for my taste but when his Hex Maniac pic dropper around 2019 I think he really came into his own cummercially and artistically. His newer work has really nice rendering and composition finesse which give the girls butts he draw a really nice boost.

I'm kinda curious about something and that tierlist just gave me an idea, for all dads willing to share their username can you give examples of artwork(s)/artists you love? I want to see what made you guys draw what you draw and it'll be fun having the thread full of cool art. If you REALLY don't wanna say who you are it's fine but i'd personally love to look at your art along with what you posted so i can really see the connections (no matter how small).

I personally love Toriyama's post dragon ball artwork, The chibi look appeals to me and i love how simple and 3 dimensional it looks if that makes sense. I actually like Kaneko's art for similar reasons (the depth the rendering gives) in addition to that there's also an air of divinity he gives his characters, I specifically love the piece I posted with the 4 archangels. I also love art from old rpgs, they're cozy and really tell you a lot about characters through their designs; If i had to pick one it would probably be chrono cross, the entire game is honestly beautiful and the pre-rendered backgrounds are the best i've seen, the character art is also great my personal favourite being lynx (the big furry dude in black, picrel). There are more examples but i feel like the blogpost went on for way too long.

I understand my placement, i think my art is somewhat recognizable because of the same brush i use for everything, the 3 characters i hyperfixate on, and the colours i tend to use. But if one would force me to switch mediums and draw another subject, i dont think it would translate that well, as i struggle with the most basic of anatomy, and drawing feels more like trying to find something. instead of being able to put down what i think. I think being recognizable between mediums is nice, and i think you are doing a good job there, being able to capture the same characters in pixelart, digital drawings and your traditional sketches.

Hmm, I've read that a very common theory has to do with cold, places in which it snowed had to "problem solve" far more often, to survive through the winter, so this required civility among different tribes/families, and planning for storing food, which selects for both behaviors, higher IQs and less aggressiveness.

In my view though, even if we fixed people's IQ's I think society really is ignoring the aspect of beauty's ability to inspire people to higher pursuits. I think that what we currently classify as "trans" is not really existent in the way trans people want it to be, but also, the people that say that trans people aren't "real" are also missing the forest for the trees.

Pro trans people point towards studies in which they do brain scans and find that trans people's (in this case trans women) brains are shown to be more similar to they self identified gender (in this case woman) than their biologically assigned one (man/male), but also completely ignore the fact that these trans women are already on hormones, that will naturally make their brain more "woman like", and also that they are purposely acting, thinking, and presenting themselves to be more like a woman, than a man.

I personally, think that it's largely a social phenomenon due to the person feeling deeply insecure about their own identity, which makes an existential "dysphoria" of trying to escape their own identity in any way they can. The grass is always greener on the other side.

They are real in the sense that we are approaching transhumanism, so they are indeed neither mentally, or hormonally the gender they were born in, but I think a large part of the debate is almost entirely due to language limitations, and societal norms, which aren't eternal.

sure. I made this a while ago, before I fell into the dirty, stinky dungeons of coom art. A lot of people say I should go back, but I stick with NSFW for two big reasons.
One, my work was completely lacking in appeal, I could only draw weird monsters, robots, creatures etc. It seriously handicapped the scope of what I could draw and the contemporary freelance art scene is so anime-flavoured these days, that knowing how to draw with appeal and even things like cute or sexy appeal is just the cost of doing business. I've actually really enjoyed living outside my comfort zone with the coom art though. It's still not as good as my old work, but I like that it's an unfamiliar territory I'm continuing to make my own.
The other reason is the pay is just better and the jobs are more frequent for fetish art. It's simply a matter of paying bills.

I should update my influence map.
Artists like Slugbox, Thirty 8ght, Masamune Shirow, Cham22, Owasobi, Hinobento, Neisan, MossaCannibalis, Shindol and Kuronyan have been pretty influential over my coom arc.

Cool idea, never thought about compiling artists like this. Was a lot harder than expected cause I wanted to boil it down to just 11 (cause I liked this template).
I'm a huge sucker for paintings and I think that's pretty obvious with a majority of the list here. I think a big reason for this is that most of the art I consumed in my childhood, more than even anime and manga, was stuff related to WoW, MTG and League, the first two having been a major part of my life since I was like 5, which is also how I found out about Kan Liu, Greg and Dominik in the first place.

For the other four (Ookubo, Kamome, Cope and Moers) the common theme is that I love their stories in addition to their art. Soul Eater, Unsounded, Witch Hat and the Zamonia Books are some of the stories which had the biggest impact on me for one reason or another, and so it's probably natural that I like their art.

Whenever I share my drawings with friends, they say they are good, but I don't think they are, so I always end up deleting them after a few days (it's really hard for me in DAD since I can't delete them lol, but I think that'll help me overcome that bad habit).
