/mmg/ - Manga Making General
The general thread for Manga / manga-styled comic-making, manga-style illustration and related comic work. That said, everyone is welcome here.

Support each other and talk about your work or the work of others that excites you. Inking, character design, paneling / layout, writing, planning, and other discussions are all welcome.
Post resources, questions, in-progress pages, breakdowns of other works, etc. If a work is not yours, credit the maker (unless it's fucking obvious like a full page of One Piece or something).
Thanks to everyone for making /mmg/ a level-headed and helpful place. Remember, drawing and making comics and manga are difficult endeavors, and we're all in this struggle together.

Some western / indie publishers of Manga:

Saturday AM ( https://www.saturday-am.com/ )
> Digital indie magazine, seems to be on the up-and-up
> Open submissions for long-form series; also distributes series currently being published elsewhere.
> Regularly publishes one-shots, making it a good potential outlet for already-finished work.

Oni Press ( https://onipress.com/ )
> Technically indie, but at this point large enough by comic standards to be mentioned in the same breath as other publishers.

Antarctic Press ( https://antarctic-press.myshopify.com/ )
> Longtime large-indie publisher of OEL / manga-esque books.
> Seemingly taking submissions at present if https://antarctic-press.myshopify.com/pages/submissions is anything to go on.

Yen Press ( https://yenpress.com/ )
> Started out as a small indie publisher of original / Korean material, and has grown reasonably popular since.
> As of 2016, it is also one of the western arms of the Kadokawa Corporation, with Kadokawa owning a 51% stake.
> Editorial inquiries can apparently be sent to yenpress@yenpress.com, however, they apparently are not open to new submissions at this time.

Viz Media / Viz Originals ( https://www.viz.com/originals )
> *The* western manga publisher.
> Currently in the exploratory stages of setting up an English label.
> Submissions are open and several books have been announced. However, progress on the label seems to be moving very slowly.
> Still might be worth a shot anyway.

Shrine Comics ( https://shrinecomics.com/ )
> Small indie manga publisher
> Seemingly attempting to make the transition to physical volumes
> Allows crossposting to other sites

Iconic Comics (https://www.iconiccomics.com/)
>A bit like Oni Press and Antarctic Press
>A small publisher with a focus on indie works with manga inspiration

Other open comic publishers:

Dark Horse ( https://www.darkhorse.com )
>Dark Horse still welcomes your submissions, and all submissions will still be reviewed, just as they always have been.
>All unsolicited story/series proposals must have a full creative team on board. Writer-only proposals will not be reviewed.

Image comics ( https://imagecomics.com/ )
>Image Comics only publishes creator-owned material. They do not contract creators; they’re only interested in publishing original content for which you would retain all rights.
>Image Comics publishes creator-owned/creator-generated properties and THEY DON’T PAY PAGE RATES. Image takes a small flat fee off the books published, and it will be the responsibility of the creators to determine the division of the remaining pay between their creative team members.

Drawn and quarterly ( https://drawnandquarterly.com/ )
>Please email a low resolution PDF with at least 20 pages of comics and cover letter to submissions. Do not send dropbox links, scripts, or proposals. Please read our submissions FAQ.

Fantagraphics ( https://www.fantagraphics.com/ )
>submission page: https://www.fantagraphics.com/pages/faq

Top Shelf Productions ( https://www.topshelfcomix.com/ )
>Regarding submissions, we're easy. Just email us a download link of what you'd like us to review. NOTE: We cannot accept cover letters, plot synopses, or scripts unless they are accompanied by a minimum of 10-20 completed pages (i.e., fully inked and lettered comic book pages).

for a while I wasnt working on my manga cause I had to do commissions but I'm now trying to make this a priority. my pages are starting to come out faster than before and I don't get stunlocked by a drawing I'm not getting right as often. I feel like its getting better now that it has real attention but I'm really trying to push it to the next level soon. It still takes alot of redrafts to get action that feels right or close to meaningful and my effects are still really lacking.

I tried posting in /hyw/ again but currently my stuff is being replied to over and over by some tripfag idiot making some really blanket statements on the whole thing.

Wow /hyw/ looks like an alternative universe version of /mmg/.

Theres a lot of arguing there but I did see something interesting: feedback from nodraws. Personally, I think nodraws and normal people have some of the most valuable feedback possible. At the end of the day you want normal people to like what you draw, right? If not, then that's fine too but you gotta be honest with yourself.

>feedback from nodraws. Personally, I think nodraws and normal people have some of the most valuable feedback possible.
>At the end of the day you want normal people to like what you draw, right?
see, this trip is desperately trying to convince me that this is true while using "giving feedback" as an excuse to look busy and active in the "community."

If I wanted feedback from nodraws I can get that elsewhere. I don't need it from a dude who posts 4 massive posts in a row for attention. that's not "normal" Telling me to de-program and ditch the porn shit out of my comic is telling me to ditch half the premise all these years later. I don't need crit from dudes who don't see the point of the work at all. Especially if they have no knowledge on how to draw.

last time I was here a "person" called me a woke race tratior for having a mixed race couple in my story. a fact which that person made up after seeing one drawing of a black man and white girl (actually asian, but he's got a narrative to push here.) together in my concept art.

I hope I can be forgiven for being dismissive of certain critiques these days.

The problem with /hyw/ is that it's like a bizarro world over there as >>7761992 said. Its filled with random nodraws coming in or anons who only care about whatever story they want to tell and that's it. Now you might say, well, didn't that work for ONE? And I would say sure, but ONE's story was enjoyable enough that everyone read it despite the pre-/beg/ artwork. So many /hyw/ comics (not all, but the clear majority) seem like there was absolutely zero planning on the story, pacing, paneling, speech bubble placement, etc. Just straight stream of consciousness everything else be damned. Over the last year or two, I've also noticed that there is a clear trend where anons who post comics with nicer artwork are for the most part blatantly ignored regardless of genre, art style, etc. It's very odd.

Handling critique is a lot like learning who to let into your home and who to leave on your doorstep. It's prudent to listen to what people have to say so do that, but in the same way you shouldn't let every guy off the street into your home don't also take what strangers say with utmost importance if they are not communicating their intentions. You don't know where they come from or why they are saying what they are saying. Not all critiques have value. Some will have no value to you and some only hurt you and not give anything back. I heard a saying a while ago that goes something like "Keep your ears open to everyone, keep your heart closed" Your home is your heart. Those people you want to come visit you every day are the homies who know you and understand what you're trying to accomplish.

The misunderstanding that you should accept every critique from anyone is as misguided as a person assuming that being stingy with their money about everything is the same as being financially literate. Just spend it on things you know will give you some value in return.

I think there is a threshold of actually being a frequent poster too. Regulars tend to get plenty of engagement, but you can probably count the number of regulars on both hands. People always get stuck in learning phase consuming every lesson ever exists not realizing that the only route of every successful creative journey always can be boiled down to:

Low critical thinking skills. You think that just because someone is successful that means everything they do is right.

Araki is a great artist but the combination of him being from a different time period, having different strengths and weaknesses that can be examined over 30 years of art, and this book trying to talk about modern sensibilities means theres a lot to criticize about the concept of the book "how to write villains".

You can say a lot of bad things about how each araki villain is written. But if you were to only look at the modern day ones, you got tooru who is probably top ten worse villains. Yeah his power is cool, every jojo villains is.

I dunno lets rank his villains

DIO: One of the most iconic anime villains ever, I dont think hes very interesting but hes super beloved, although he doesn have alot of screentime funnily. give that an 8/10 just for how iconic he is.
Kars and the pillar men: Yeah theyre pretty good for what they are, better than most generic anime baddies 6.5/10.

Kira: Super interesting serial killer, with a interesting plot about falling in love with Hayatos mother. 9/10

Diavolo and Doppio: Underrated pair, solid and present antagonist. 7/10

Pucci: One of the most involved antagonists that grows throughout the part along with Jolyne. 9/10

Funny Valentine: 10/10

Tooru: rando who comes into the part, kills all of the interesting and morally grey characters, and turns the ending of a super interesting plot into a generic kill the bad guy plot -100/10

Acca: Very interesting villain so far, whos super likeable, excited to see what happens, although it could be a Jobin scenario with him. 8/10

Averaging it out, that comes to a -5/10, guess you were right, Arakis a fucking hack writer, and you should never listen to him

Depends on what you are going for. In the real world, the worst people in our society cant conceive of good and evil, or dont care, they just do what they want, kill and rape whoever.

This probably isnt as interesting for a big baddie though.
Ive heard alot of people say, the key is having a consitent ideology yourself, so that you can show and understand why the villain is wrong or right in their actions. Personally the villains Ive written arent evil for the sake of it, but instead treat it like a job, or hate being evil, believing that theyve gotta do this, for the greater good. With one of my villains probably being right in his evil, and the other is unknowingly being lied to about the true purpose of his work.

Brother cant you just compare your work to like officially uploaded manga/doujins and compare? Font size can vary widely depending scene by scene, so are you looking for like a bare minimum font size? If you want that it should be no smaller then 12(unless you are doing some very specific gag). Like thats just a standard for published works period, and when Ive printed my comics it reads fine on paper as it does on screen.
As far as to avoid your dilemma in the future you should plan ahead of time the space required in your panels for world bubbles. However, you shouldnt be afraid to cover some of your art with the panel or(in the case of the hentai doujin especially) trim your sentences. Keep it short and sweet. Also consider that if you have enough white space in the panel, you CAN get away with just doing like a wall of text and have a line pointing towards the character speaking(although I'd avoid it if two people are talking in the same panel) panels are convenient and clean but not always necessary.

Why are all the younger (born from the mid 2000s onward) wannabe mangakas emulating Fujimoto and Gege styles so much? It's a recurring think I see with artists under or barely around 20, it's like they only study the work of those two artists and a few more popular currently running mangas like Kagurabachi instead of something more complex like Blade Of The Immortal or Berserk.
To be fair though, millennial westoid "anime" artists also had the same exact fixation but for Trigger/Gainax artists instead, so it might just be a generational thing

Kagurabachi is relatively new, isn't it? Probably hasn't had time to really get super deep. At least CSM (Pt1) has "finished" and so has Demon Slayer. And those are just this generation's easily accessible series.

You could ask why 15-20 years ago wannabes were emulating Bleach and Naruto, or why 25 years ago people were emulating DBZ.

Its just the easiest, most accessible, probably core series that they focused on and were inspired by.

As the kind of artist you're describing, I gravitated toward emulating Geges linework because I realized he was doing far more with his messy pen sketches then I was with slow intentional inking. leaning into a messier product works when you're making an energetic action series. and it helps cure perfectionism, its easier to get pages done and accept flaws with that kind of style.

>>7764976
This. Horikoshi was the first style I emulated but I've let a lot of the habits from that time go in favor of new ones. I liked learning from his tropes but emulating them didn't fit the kind of artist I was. I guess I should have read hxh earlier since that also has a very messy style like geges.

And I can see the girl got hit somehow, but you didn't show the blow, which is a bad choice for an action scene. Did she hit her with her own chain? Kick her? Force push?

I like the chained weapon panels, I think they're the priority of the page, I'd go as far as breaking some of the panel structure and just let old hag catching the chain bleed a little bit more onto the others, a simple example would be putting her breasts on top of the panel below, but if you don't want the "pervy" way I'd give more breathing room for her upper torso, I don't like the motion of the right arm on the elbow area being cropped by the other panel below, it interferes with the action and it's a bit distracting.

Anyways here's an example of something that could work with your scene, just crop some of it to fit your page, also there's room to play with the action lines, it's a good contrast to the "stillness" of the other panels.

I've been drawing in general for well over 10 years at this point, but I'm still very new to comics (2-3 years). The goal is to just keep drawing a couple new chapters, though the pace is very much glacial at times. Once the chapter I'm currently working on is wrapped up I have enough content to consider printing a volume. That would mostly be for my own sake, as it would be nice to physically hold a volume of my work, but I still have to do a lot of research on that front.

Additionaly I can sell this comic at a small comic shop that sells independent stuff, I have to print it myself (200 bucks for 30 bucks with glossy paper). No feedback from a publisher.

Online, I can get pretty much no reaction to my stuff whatsoever. Publisher also have no reaction. Offline reaction to my stuff is pretty much always positive, but what feedback is more truthful and valuable, online or offline? Online, people are more likely to be honest no?

theres a difference between the artsy crowd and the manga and comics crowd. I see alot of books in book stores that have bad art ( not saying yours is bad, but these artists have awful art thats hard to read), but theres all these books in bookstores, that I suppose adults and people interested in that content read. Here its more of a focus on the skill. Yours reads more like a movie for example than a comic, if that makes sense. But yeah, the real stuff pays atleast and gets your name out, here people value how art looks though

Thats why people rarely critique comics, but it makes sense. These things take hundreds of hours to make so nobody wants to mindbreak an artist and make them quit drawing forever by tearing a comic apart. Globalcomix seems to solve this issue by showing you exactly what pages people read, so you get an idea of how bored people are when they read it. But also people can stop reading a comic for any reason so its not that accurate.
At the end of the day the best way to get feeback is to ask seriously for it and be prepared for pain.

Unless a golden opportunity lands in my lap, I'm going to try to stick to the eromanga side of things for at least a couple more books. The idea is to focus on making stuff that sells, then start taking risks on aiming for an all-ages serialization.
The whole reason I went the eromanga route to start with was because I believe aiming for an all-ages serialization right off the bat is super risky, and I can see so many promising aspiring professionals get caught up in that and so far not getting anywhere with it.
I say "try to stick to", because who knows, maybe I'll get completely sick of drawing porn sooner than planned. There's no shortage of stories I wanna tell and porn isn't the ideal vehicle for most of them. Life is short and comics take a long time to make.

I agree to an extent. While i do believe it is possible to get a big fanbase for webcomics that are not pornographic (Just look at Homestuck for example, i never got into the series but it's impossible to deny how big it is) i will also say that the internet is full of people with less wholesome priorities and that one guy who makes that bug webcomic was right.

Globalcomix tells me that most people reading my manga come directly to the site,
Dividing page reads by unique visits shows that each person reads very few pages, which doesn't make complete sense. I think each time someone returns to the site, it counts as a new view, and I was posting chapters every day, but I remember during that time I was uploading I was hardly getting views.
I think the average is most people do not even finish chapter 1, and then 3 or 4 people keep going.

Global comix also made a tweet about my manga but you can see most people dont even finish more than a handful of pages.

Being shilled by GC seems like a good way to get readers but I don't know if they made that tweet because it was already being read by people or because it was new or what. The other option is to have followers to show your comic to which is unhelpful advice.

There a high chance that even IF you manage to pitch something that a publisher thinks might sell, it'll flop and be cancelled and you'll have to start over. And that's a big if. Even within japan, the majority of people who try to go pro fail. It is a big risk to stake your career on landing a serialization right off the bat like that, I think it's smarter to aim lower and build up. Not that there is no bar to hit in eromanga, but the bar isn't as high.

I mean even porn isn't sure-fire, I just think the odds are higher. I might even be wrong, This approach isn't based on factual evidence or anything, it just seems logical to me that it would be easier to succeed where the goal is mostly just to make something hot. Yeah well, thankfully I don't have to worry too much about that. Even if the public internet disappeared tomorrow I wouldn't be out of a job, as long people in japan still buy books I'm fairly safe.
>but I've given up on the illusion that I'm gonna get rich off porn.

Dude, why care about what a publisher thinks? Just go indie, that's what everyone who has a webcomic on 4chan is doing, and if it doesn't get a big following, still see it through to the end and be happy with what you accomplished.
You don't need a publisher and to get hundreds of thousands of followers to be happy with whatever passion project you want to create, just make sure it's something you actually want to do instead of doing it just because you feel like you have to.

Unfortunately I'm an adult who needs to earn a living. This means whatever I make needs to be set up to bring in money, and the work it takes to do that and manage the monetization side of things takes away from the actual making of the comic side of things. I've learned by trying that I will always find myself putting off the monetization and distribution efforts and directing them into the comic itself, so realistically speaking I need somebody to do that for me. I don't have a partner nor do I have the money to pay someone to manage the business, and publishers are right there and even pay up front. It's the only logical choice.

Patreons are easy but usually not enough on their own. I don't know of anybody who makes their living entirely through patreon, and if they do they're lucky to earn enough purely through patreon that they don't need to supplement that with anything else. Everybody else who does this needs to put in real effort into merchandising and marketing their work, constantly. I'm just not that guy.

>What's the point of making something that will intentionally fail?
You're not supposed to try to fail, you're supposed to try to succeed every time. But you should be aware that you WILL fail over and over again. You need to fail over and over again in order to learn. So the faster you get those failures out of the way the faster you can get to the successes. Just make sure you do learn from your failures and don't just mindlessly beat you head against the wall expecting it to crack.
>I don't know how to make failures less soul crushing.
You don't. It sucks, I know. There's a reason very few who try end up succeeding. Everyone who does succeed has gone through their fair share of failures too.

I'll try. I know some of my issues but they simply feel too many and I doubt even schooling really goes in-depth into how to fix much of it. I have to improve my backgrounds, shading, and fundamentals at minimum and basically throw everything I've worked on in a garbage bin. If it takes me the same amount of time I'll be 40 years old and still be a complete failure of a man.

Think about it as being at the doctor and getting your penis checked by a cute nurse or something mildly embarrassing, the first time sucks, but then it becomes trivial and there are things far scarier than someone judging you while you're trying to stay healthy.

I remember dreading starting a project for a comic, lots of paralysis by analysis, took me months to get started, will the characters look good? is the storyboard really okay? how do I do x when it comes up? how do I deal with this scene using perspective while making it look decent? When I did the first page I thought it was overwhelming and maybe I wasn't cut out for it, then I made the 2nd, and the 3rd and so on until I was done. All of my questions and problems, I somehow solved them on the spot and it wasn't as bad as I thought, things became simpler. It's hard to explain, but you just get into the mood of making the idea turn into a page and if you prepared a little bit things would fall into place, you become invested. I was happy with making it through, it gives you a small boost of confidence, I couldn't care less if someone saw it, it was good enough for me and learned a lot.

The next project will be hard but I can manage, my penis is out, so what?

You have to focus on one thing at a time, and one level at a time. You have to be happy with small improvements. You also need to make the most out of your improvements and play to your strengths. For instance you said you want to improve your shading. Compared to everything else you listed that doesn't sound as important. don't bother with shading until you feel like you've leveled up

Counting the days going by as you do "nothing" won't help. rome wasn't built in a day.

taking in feedback and making a change does not take long. Even if having to adjust finished work is a pain in the ass. I used to bitch ALOT about getting crit "too late" and not wanting to redo pages. but really, I was afraid that since I failed the first time I'll fail again. Feeling like its better to accept the bad result then waste time creating a second. but a revision always creates a better product. and seeing that revised version is always satisfying. I proved it here. >>7765735
Even if you change 1 simple thing someone pointed out. It can do a lot for your confidence in your work. Knowing someone knew your work could be better can be a driving factor that you need to channel. You have to ask "If someone else could see that in me/my work, why can't you make that real?" I really felt that when the other anon commented about my layout, and I made the effort to meet what was in hindsight a very simple expectation.

This is what I struggle with the most. I don't see the point of living if all I'm doing is serving myself. I was passionate about what I did because I was hopeful it would be something meaningful. I'm afraid I'm simply not or ever going to be good enough to turn this into something people will enjoy. (Or at least, will be accepted by publishers thus making it able to be read to begin with) I guess I have one friend who would be happy simply by me continuing to draw and work on this, but I feel like because of him I even have more of a duty to make it something people will like. I think outside of my bad drawing skills I think I have something good, which I don't know if that makes me feel better or worse over all.
>>7767095
> For instance you said you want to improve your shading. Compared to everything else you listed that doesn't sound as important. don't bother with shading until you feel like you've leveled up
Shading is about the only thing I've slightly been able to improve concretely. It was also something that friend told me I should prioritize. It's single handedly put depth to drawings that were originally flat and I really wish that was my only issue.
>used to bitch ALOT about getting crit "too late" and not wanting to redo pages. but really, I was afraid that since I failed the first time I'll fail again.
That's fair, I'm mostly afraid of this because I have to redo at minimum 50 pages and since I am a one trick that basically means redoing the one thing I spent way too much time on because the few friends I have are either extremely busy or not artists. I did many panels and I can't even begin to understand how to properly redo what I spent years on because I'm an amateur, and I have no incentive to draw unless I feel like I can actually obtain a goal.

I abandoned it very early on because it was slowing me down. I can't look at a screen for longer than a few hours at a time and I got bad tunnel vision. I could only complete a few pages a week with my full attention and feeling my best where I can do one every day now. Quick and easy workflows are dependent on using your comfort zone to your advantage.

Those borders are a reference for printing. I think even if you never intend to print that work, it's just useful to understand what they are for and build good habits for the future you who might be interested in it. If you draw your borders to the crop zone and tried to print it, it will show up on the page. This is why they recommend you draw all the way up to the ruled areas as well if you extend to bleed. Paper cutting machines are imperfect and seeing unfinished art around the edges of the page looks bad.

Your art quality will tremendously improve and will be significantly better even as an amateur than that of someone who purely does digital. Normies probably don't really care, but it never really mattered because they never cared about art but the social status of a product. Creating a true work of art is about putting as much life as you possibly can, and the real properties of art and imperfections of real tools and real hands are part of it. Even the great digital works like Miyazaki's works starting the 2000s would intentionally put errors to replicate that feel.

People don't care one way or the other, only artists do, and what differences might be obvious to us are completely missed by non artists. People always think I draw digitally, they really don't see it.

All papers are made the same, with a final trim line, a crop line, and a safe zone.
The ruled area is your final trim zone, but anything between that line and the crop line is the "trim area", things in that margin get cut away, but again the machines are not always precise when cutting so you'll get more or less what is put there.

I have to reiterate this is just a good habit to keep up with because god forbid you find yourself 100+ pages in wanting your first ever book and you realize one mistake has permanently fucked everything. In some cases like resolution or page size it can't even be fixed.

I dunno if you are using CSP, but if you are use the dustpan tool, its specifically designed to get rid of all the dust that you dont want. You can adjust its sensivity too so you dont lose your linework

yeah looking online your right, i think ijust got confused by picrel, pretty annoying cause im 65 pages into https://imgur.com/a/wealth-toil-work-progress-first-chapter-9ucpQ1J#

which is all wrong in that sense, although logically Im sure I can just play around with the white space on these pages, however much is needed with the publishers to ensure its correct. What im wondering now though is if switching to the correct way will look off, if all of a sudden, my drawings are slightly smaller and lower resolution. I mean Im going to, but its just funny all this time I've been drawing pages way bigger than I needed too, thats a lot of time wasted on that, but whatever, now it just means I can get stuff done faster

No, online is the best advertisement for your comic. Unless your art is gorgeous, no one will bother paying for something in the age of free entertainment.

1.) Get one of the sheets of paper ready.
2.) Pick up a pencil or pen
3.) Put it to the paper
4.) Move your arm around

You're still young so there's no need to worry about that.
As for drawing, i understand how that could feel at times, but i do recommend /coc/ on /co/. They have weekly drawpies with artists who are very supportive, in fact the community there in general is very supportive and they helped me out just by being kind and chill people.
Here's a link to the latest /coc/ thread: >>>/co/150911190
Trust me, it will do you good to socialize and share there.

Thank you. I'll check it out and might be more productive here. I have some things I need help with, but honestly I was planning on waiting until a new thread appears, which I'm hoping is sometime soon.

I'll post it here and then repost it when the new thread starts since I'll be out for a bit and don't want to forget. I have a finished comic/manga and in multiple languages, however the art is shoddy and only some of it is something I'd consider remotely professional. Is it worth it for me to redo the whole thing from scratch or just send it to people anyways and use my (slightly) improved drawing skills on testing new one shots or even making the chapters for pages that I intend to do if it ever gets serialized?

My primary audience are people who would be the type who go to physical book stores, among other things so I'm prioritizing releasing things physically for now. I actually don't have it shared online yet at all and think it's best to preserve that until I've completed one of the last translations since my primary demographic isn't even English speaking unfortunately.

What specific to drawing comics traditionally would you want to know? What tools to use? Inking techniques? If you don't know how to draw comics at all, Understanding Comics and Making Comics are available in the OP. That was the first thing I picked up before I tried to do anything, they are probably some of the most valuable and practical books you can read.

Sorry, I got some anxiety left over. I redid one of my designs but it was just me redrawing a more generic male rather than one of the characters. I'll intend to mess with her again soon before this weekend. I'm definitely trying to get my experimental phase back.

Drawing traditional has nothing to do with learning how to draw panels, you can learn how to do that through any medium you want. For inking though, I haven't got straight technical answers, but because when I learned I didn't have access to resources. I fumbled my way through trial and error as I suspect many people do.

The thing about comics is no one person has an answer for how everything should be precisely done, every author will do things in their own way, or to just copy their teacher or who they are working under. Artists can't even reach a solid consensus on how to depict ears. I have a shelf with 5 different works and every single one of them tackles the same problems (panel style, gutter width, pen sizes for panel borders, etc) in their own way. I could tell you exactly what I do, but that's all. It might not reflect what you want to do or what you like. Pick your favorite author and take notes.
There is maybe only one surefire thing I can suggest and that's to get comfortable drawing with any pen. I did a lot of contour exercises early on with pen only. Lots of people have heavy anxiety about not being able to erase things and screwing up, so draw anything and everything with pens. One of my favorite exercises was to draw without lifting the pen from the paper and redraw over lines only.

That's fair. I'm mostly trial and erroring it too. I occasionally get blotches and I definitely think I have an issue doing one continuous stroke, so I was looking more towards those type of quick tips.

The only thing he doesnt cover is fitting into a proper comic page with those ruler borders that tell you where the printers are gonna cut. For that read the fucking thread, or do what I did and go to Mixam. You dont have to buy anything, but in their online store you can find measurements for what a book page would be. If I recall you select what kind of book you want to print, put in a page count, and Mixam provides a downloadable pdf template for you to follow. Of course if your paper has the ruler border already, again, just read the fucking thread.

Good advice anon. I myself with my comic, even though I already have CSP and a screen tablet, wanted to draw and ink traditionally cause I knew with my experience in digital is that shit like lineart takes fucking forever and even with quick editing tools sketching took forever as well cause I dont get the same visual/haptic feedback that I do with traditional paper and pen/pencil. I figured that me using inks and just gitting gud at it would be 10X faster then doing this shit digitally, and for the most part it is. I only use CSP for editing and rendering really
