/mmg/ - Manga Making General
The general thread for Manga / manga-styled comic-making, manga-style illustration and related comic work. That said, everyone is welcome here.

Support each other and talk about your work or the work of others that excites you. Inking, character design, paneling / layout, writing, planning, and other discussions are all welcome.
Post resources, questions, in-progress pages, breakdowns of other works, etc. If a work is not yours, credit the maker (unless it's fucking obvious like a full page of One Piece or something).
Thanks to everyone for making /mmg/ a level-headed and helpful place. Remember, drawing and making comics and manga are difficult endeavors, and we're all in this struggle together.

Some western / indie publishers of Manga:

Saturday AM ( https://www.saturday-am.com/ )
> Digital indie magazine, seems to be on the up-and-up
> Open submissions for long-form series; also distributes series currently being published elsewhere.
> Regularly publishes one-shots, making it a good potential outlet for already-finished work.

Oni Press ( https://onipress.com/ )
> Technically indie, but at this point large enough by comic standards to be mentioned in the same breath as other publishers.

Antarctic Press ( https://antarctic-press.myshopify.com/ )
> Longtime large-indie publisher of OEL / manga-esque books.
> Seemingly taking submissions at present if https://antarctic-press.myshopify.com/pages/submissions is anything to go on.

Yen Press ( https://yenpress.com/ )
> Started out as a small indie publisher of original / Korean material, and has grown reasonably popular since.
> As of 2016, it is also one of the western arms of the Kadokawa Corporation, with Kadokawa owning a 51% stake.
> Editorial inquiries can apparently be sent to yenpress@yenpress.com, however, they apparently are not open to new submissions at this time.

Viz Media / Viz Originals ( https://www.viz.com/originals )
> *The* western manga publisher.
> Currently in the exploratory stages of setting up an English label.
> Submissions are open and several books have been announced. However, progress on the label seems to be moving very slowly.
> Still might be worth a shot anyway.

Shrine Comics ( https://shrinecomics.com/ )
> Small indie manga publisher
> Seemingly attempting to make the transition to physical volumes
> Allows crossposting to other sites

Iconic Comics (https://www.iconiccomics.com/)
>A bit like Oni Press and Antarctic Press
>A small publisher with a focus on indie works with manga inspiration

Other open comic publishers:

Dark Horse ( https://www.darkhorse.com )
>Dark Horse still welcomes your submissions, and all submissions will still be reviewed, just as they always have been.
>All unsolicited story/series proposals must have a full creative team on board. Writer-only proposals will not be reviewed.

Image comics ( https://imagecomics.com/ )
>Image Comics only publishes creator-owned material. They do not contract creators; they’re only interested in publishing original content for which you would retain all rights.
>Image Comics publishes creator-owned/creator-generated properties and THEY DON’T PAY PAGE RATES. Image takes a small flat fee off the books published, and it will be the responsibility of the creators to determine the division of the remaining pay between their creative team members.

Drawn and quarterly ( https://drawnandquarterly.com/ )
>Please email a low resolution PDF with at least 20 pages of comics and cover letter to submissions. Do not send dropbox links, scripts, or proposals. Please read our submissions FAQ.

Fantagraphics ( https://www.fantagraphics.com/ )
>submission page: https://www.fantagraphics.com/pages/faq

Top Shelf Productions ( https://www.topshelfcomix.com/ )
>Regarding submissions, we're easy. Just email us a download link of what you'd like us to review. NOTE: We cannot accept cover letters, plot synopses, or scripts unless they are accompanied by a minimum of 10-20 completed pages (i.e., fully inked and lettered comic book pages).

Why dont you make a genre combination? like idk, a guy gets isekai'd and decides to become not a regular adventurer, but a super hero with a costume and stuff. Hilarity ensues because nobody in that universe understands the concept of "superhero".
You could also make a native isekai slice of life depicting the life of an adventurer's family member who instead lives a very mundane, regular life. Once in a while there's glimpses of the fantasy world out there but thats it.
Also you could make spoopy food capeshit. Imagine a manga about a a silly and sympathetic supervillain who steals rare objects to use them as ingredients for dishes of his own invention and the whole thing happens in a "nightmare before christmas"esque setting. His arch enemy is of course the town's hero. Basically use the old to create the new.

There point of a comic is someone telling you a story so its hard to get invested in something that you aren't sure is going to be cohesive, allign with human sensibilities like morals and messages, or that it is even a human's idea in the first place.

I'm 27 and I often think of that stuff but then I remember that a chunk of my life is just surviving chronic abuse by my entire family and the other chunk is just time spent fixing myself while trying to learn how to draw with what little time and energy I can muster, whereas Fujimoto and honestly most succesful people are dudes that had full support from their family or that at the very least werent relentlessly bullied. Also often in countries with much better artistic education than my third world shithole that doesnt really give a fuck about the arts. Idk what youre life story is but most people in 4chan come from backgrounds of being bullied by family or schoolmates, also had little to zero support or came from deep poverty. And 99% in countries that dont have anything as robust as the manga industry. Anyway my point is that fuck it, we all have our circumstances. Fujimoto got to do so much before 27 not only because of talent and hard work but also because he was lucky with a ton of shit that nobody ever acknowledges.

Thought I'd repost this here for interest but, I found out yesterday a DC industry artist lives out my way, and does portfolio reviews every month for free at a local comic shop. I went out and met him and nervously showed my work.

>So his first thoughts were that it's hard to really critique or say anything since it's "so it's own thing and world" so any like rule breaking I'm kinda doing doesn't matter since it seems to fit the world I've created. For example, I don't necessarily have very fleshed out backgrounds or great perspective, but it also wouldn't really improve it if it did. He definitely got some laughs, and smiles, but also wasn't too sure on the plot, and isn't super knowledgeable about manga
>The main takeaways I got were, try to make more depth. the bubbles not having tails is a little awkward, and sometimes the bubbles/text are in awkward positions

>the bubbles not having tails is a little awkward
Yeah, for english I definitely agree.
Some languages make it pretty obvious who's talking just by how what words different characters would use (japanese is an obvious example) but english not so much, most ways of talking are pretty neutral, you'd have to go out of your way to give someone an obvious accent or way of speaking to make it clear who's talking. So for clarity's sake it's probably best to just stick to putting tails on your speech bubbles.
Anonymous No.7786437 [Report]
>>7786381
I think that's because a big part of passing critique is dependant on intentions, like "Are you trying to market this?" "Are you trying to fit into an industry?" "Do you just want to know how this feels to other people?" or "Do you just want my opinion?" I think the only baseline you can have without knowing what the goal is asking if it at least works on it's own, and what you got sounds reassuring. I think this is just good to keep in mind when asking other people "What do you think of my work?" Because so many people will interpret this through many different lenses, and give you A's and F's depending on standards they may not be sharing.

I think I'll share this here because I think a lot of people might enjoy it, and I honestly don't know if this image will ever get published or not.

I'm still looking for that line on how much is too far and not. This image might be going too far. However, it's also relevant to some thoughts I wanna share after reading a lot of the conversation last thread.

Honestly, idk where this anti-sex puritanism is coming from. I understand concern over oversexualizing something, but this idea that it's mututally exclusive from having a deeper narrative or rich characters feels misguided. Sex is fundamentally part of the human experience, and sex and sexuality themselves can be used to explore certain themes and ideas, a lot of which do blend really well with Horror themes and the aesthetic. Just look at the films The Witch and Nosferatu as examples if you.

In truth actually, Horror and sex, have always been sort of married to each other. Vampire fiction was born from fears rooted in Victorian era puritanism. I think getting to draw and explore some of these concepts is exciting and interesting. Like, you can definitely turn sexual themes into something that's thematically relevant.

On another note, this idea that it's "selling your soul" or whatever, also feels incorrect. I think this anon >>7784275 is correct. The female body is beautiful, and drawing the female form is a lot of fun.

2/3

That being said, there is the caution of oversexualizing things as well. So to give an anectdote, I spoke with some female friends and such who've read the drafts in the past, about my editor's comments, and while they generally agreed with the direction, they also urged restraint because they really like Alice. And this is a comment I got from male readers as well. She's really likeable, and a lot of that comes down to how innocent and pure she comes across. My female friends basically said, "look there's also a lot of female readers who enjoy shounen manga, so you don't want to drive them away, by making them feel uncomfortable by pushing it too far either. A little is fine, but don't go overboard."

I sent a lot of these images and thoughts to my editor, to try and find out where that line lies. I think he's likely to tell me to dial it back a bit, because sex can also be a double edged sword. For example, if younger readers can't read the manga, because it's too sexualized.

Also, this post is laugably incorrect >>7784457

The reason Alice became the MC is because the male protagonist is a werewolf, and the setting is a fantasy setting. Which means priority no.1 is establishng the high concept and how cool it is in a very clear way. Which in this case is "Doctors fighting Eldritch Dream monsters." This is extremely difficult to do if the MC stands as a paradox to the concept, being both a Monster and a Human. It sounds easy to pull off on paper, but when you actually start to try and do it, becomes infinitely more complicated.

3/3

Think about what a chapter 1 of a manga needs to do. It has to:
- establish the high concept of the setting very clearly.
-set up the core conflict and make in interesting X vs Y
-introduce the main protagonist, and give them, clear, simple, and easy to follow goals and motivations.
-give said character an emotional through line what will make readers buy into them, and want to follow their story
-create a hook which is interesting and will want to make readers want to keep reading more
-lastly, present set pieces that allow for visual imagery that clearly communicates what it is about your work that makes it disticnt. I images that becomes iconic in their own right, but also communicat what your manga is about. For example, Luffy getting his hat from Shanks. Chihiro using fish themed sword abilities, etc...

And you have to keep in mind that you're doing this, while also competing with some very competent and well crafted manga, like Kagurabachi, JJK, etc...

Like, the high concept and more importantly HOW it's presented matters so much more in manga, than in other storytelling mediums imo. Because it's a visual medium, and because it's so fiercely competitive.

Clarity of concept and clarity of intent are so important. What is your story about exactly?

Ultimately, I'd say this is a lesson in learning to find the right protagonist for your story. Which is often not as obvious as you might thing.

What I mean by this is, ultimately the concept of a protagonist who is both monster and human, and joins the group of people who fights the monsters isn't very original, but little simple spins on that formula, can radically change how it's shaped and you should seek to embrace those changes. If the story were a modern urban setting, then this set up might be much easier to pull off. There are tons of examples. But because the setting is fantasitcal, it becomes infinitaly more complicated. Thus framing the core conflict first, is the priority.

It's essentially one tripfag that's complaining about it. Don't pay them any heed, they have been here for 19 days. If we ever get a mod hopefully they get banned.
Sadly, you addressing their retarded concerns is only going to give him the attention he so desires.

Noted.
Hopefully some people will find my advice about "learning to find who the most suitable MC for your story is" somewhat useful. I think that's been one of the most meaningful lessons I've personally learned throughout all this.

>Honestly, idk where this anti-sex puritanism is coming from.
I'm going to level with you; in the last handful of threads, we've had 2-3 disingenuous larpers. They're bad-faith trolls pretending to be prudes. They legitimately appeared out of nowhere within the last month or so.

That said, your comments about overdoing the sexuality/fanservice/etc. is a legit concern, but I think it comes down to several things. It can be respectfully done without going overboard. Also, sexuality and horror can go hand-in-hand, as things like sex or even nudity are acts done in intimate, vulnerable state. There's generally a level of trust that goes into those acts and your defenses are down, so in a way, you're putting faith in your partner that they won't harm you, or take advantage in such a vulnerable state.

Besides, there are plenty of places even outside of anime/manga where sex, reproduction, or genitalia are used in a horror setting. Look at stuff like HR Giger's artwork, or the movie Alien. It is meant to be uncomfortable because it is taking those intimate, vulnerable facets and making them raw, and uncomfortable, but still compelling in the way he makes such a human act seem alien, mechanical, and industrial.

What a profound statement.
...
If you're a total retard.

Sex has been part of entertainment since before any of us were born.
Sex is totally fine. Sex scenes are in academy award movies. Even before the jews ruled it.
Sex is fine, its just how you do it.
Fan service is the great mix between the prude and the gooner. You can make something incredibly sexy, without having full of Skinamax.

You dont even need sex. Nudity works too, even if it isnt sexual. Viggo Mortensen getting sliced up by Russians in a bathhouse is badass. Jovovich getting her skin replaced in the 5th element is both part of the plot, and gorgeous.

Even the catholic church has nude depictions.
I'll say again, only the biggest faggots, the trooniest of troons, and the gayest of prudes are against basic human nature.
All have separate reasons. Either they interpret religion wrong, hate heterosexuality, or despise beauty itself.
Draw beauty. Depict it.
Just dont be a fag about it.

if you include sex in your non-pornographic works, it better have a meaning and relevancy rather than just being coombait to retain the viewercattle's attention like hollywood does.
Using sex as the bait is a tell on how your work is mediocre and would be even less than that without the sex.

ChatGPT can be good for brainstorming, researching ideas and looking for deeper connections in certain elements. Figuring out where other things got their ideas from, translating dialogue, and even helping you break writer's block by kick-starting you into a scene or helping you organize your ideas into a framework.

What ChatGPT, like all other AI, is not good at, is being creative.

This also makes it an awful critic of work you give it, because an AI has no emotions and thus cannot feel, and the goal of a story is to stimulate emotion in readers.

Ultimately, writers cannot be replaced by AI. Storytelling is a purely human thing.

We are fated to write for dogs and automaton-like people who recoil and writhe at anything above their digitally induced limited comprehension and unfathomable and inhuman lack of living experience, so you might as well molest the virtual parrot with shanties of mediocrity delivered in the most straightforward manner.

similar issue here.
I find that it depends more on the ink itself, something about the consistency, if you dillute the ink with a little bit of water (in a separate cup) it seems to flow better, or just dip the pen itself in some water.
I've had inks that flow much hetter right of of the bottle as well, but it was more prone to smearing instead.
Also use Bristol paper if you can

also, I don't know if this is a placebo effect, but I found that prepping the nibs with concentrated white vinegar/cleaning vinegar gets the protective oil on the nibs off more effectively, i usually try to bathe them in it a little and then use a toothbrush on them with the vinegar.
Do with this as you will
